O’DEA AXED – AFTER FOUR DAYS

DARREN O’DEA has been axed by Swansea City – just FOUR days after being put in charge of the Championship side.

Following the sacking of Alan Sheehan earlier this month, the former Celtic defender was appointed caretaker of the strugglers, as CQN reported.

O’Dea was in the dug-out as the Welsh outfit, with £6million Adam Idah leading the attack, lost 3-0 to Bristol City at the weekend and was fired 48 hours later.

It’s been a whirlwind five months for the 38-year-old ex-Republic of Ireland international centre-back who left his job as professional pathway manager at the champions in June to take up the post as assistant manager at Swansea.

O’Dea had initially returned to Parkhead in September 2019 after a brief spell as a coach at Motherwell to take control of the Under-18 team. Two years later, he was promoted to the B team and became head coach in June 2022.

However, his links with Celtic, where he made 70 appearances between 2006 and 2012, were severed when he was lured to the English second-tier side in the summer.

After one appearance in the dug-out, the club, fifith from the bottom of the Championship, named Victor Matos as new head coach yesterday, as reported in the Scottish Sun, and O’Dea left the club with immediate effect.

His role at Parkhead was taken over by Shaun Maloney who, of course, is acting as interim assistant manager to Martin O’Neill while the Hoops hierarchy put the finishing touches to bringing in a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers who resigned just over a month ago.
Frenchman Wilfried Nancy remains the frontrunner for the job.
