Odsonne and breaking the €10m barrier

320

Odsonne Edouard, who turned 20 in January, is at the pivotal season of his career.  He scored lots of goals at youth level but was heading nowhere at PSG before Brendan Rodgers made the trip to Paris to encourage him to come to Glasgow.

His stats until that point were meagre: one goal in 16 appearances on loan at Toulouse, but Celtic scouted him thoroughly and all were convinced of his potential.  After settling into life in Glasgow, he is beginning to fulfil some of that potential, Sunday’s winning goal being the clearest example.

In only two months Brendan will decide whether to spend €10m on him or let him return to PSG.  For Celtic, this is a serious gamble, but I expect them to take it.

The club have money to spend right now, but being able to spend it as effectively as you would like is another story.  €10m on a striker guarantees you nothing, not even a resale value.  Then consider the contract a €10m striker would want.  The club know well how difficult it is to sign anyone who has clearly demonstrated they are ready to take on the Champions League.  To improve players at this level, we need to graduate them through the final phase of their development here.

If we are to break the €10m barrier, and I think we should, we need to be sure we can improve him and that he has the right attitude to the game.  If Brendan is convinced on these questions, Celtic will exercise their option and sign him on a permanent deal. But even after a year’s trial, it is a huge gamble.

  1. Signing Edouard, even at £7m which seems to be the most frequently quoted price, is a no brainer. He’s shown what he can do, the manager has said he’s the best young player he’s worked with, we’ll probably lose Moussa in the summer, so we should be finalizing the deal just now with PSG and the player’s representatives.

£7m is a lot of money if you don’t have any. We are cash rich and its 17 years since we last broke our transfer record, £7m is not a lot in today’s market.

Amido Balde, Teemu Pukki, Derk Boerrigter and Stefan Scepovic, £10m wasted on buying cheap and hoping or £7m on someone who’s already done more than those 4 combined and will only get better.

No doubt they are offside, but the question remains … is there any will from anyone to do anything about it

As for our young French striker … he has the potential to be brilliant, and I think we would recoup our transfer fee. My concern is that 10 million pound players want to be paid accordingly. This then has a knock-on effect for all wages for the squad …everyone else wants a raise

I would love to sign him, but question whether we can afford it

  3. I wonder what Emilio is referring to in the side bar story about leaving Celtic due to English-based agants? Did he get fleeced out of money and have to leave for Saudi to recoup?

  4. PSG are not the club for Edouard. They buy in their first team. Mbappe is same age and is now there.

If we were to buy him and break our record it would be a big gamble. We can afford it but is the best man for us.

PSG have signed these players from the FFF academy and they are all top youngsters. Man City have the same model. However, it is very rare that they get into the first team and they are sold with the “badge of Quality” which raises millions to pay for the academy.

Edouard is prime for selling and that is why we got him on loan, to finish off his development and give him first team experience in our League but more importantly the champions league. He has only played for PSG Reserves and a short Loan at Toulouse. He now has another 23 games under his belt including European ties and the winner at Ibrox. If we don’t buy him, then PSG will easily sell him at £7m.

He has played for France at every age group up to and including Under 19’s. He is known and after the world cup will be brought into the under 21 squad.

A difficult choice for Brendan but I am convinced that Brendan has saw this chap in training and will make the decision based on more information that we have. It may depend on Dembele. If Dembele stays then I don’t think Brendan will buy him.

Remember that he is young and could, if bought for 7million, after 3 or 4 years, he could be sold on with a potential profit

What will Mrs Lawwell say when Peter spends his pension fund on Odsonne

I am sure all our regular malcontents will be on to tell us why the Morally Bankrupt institution that is the Celtic Board ( yes thats what they were referred to on here) will not ever spend any money on anything other than heated driveways

  6. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Think he could be really useful in a counter-attacking setup, which I would like to see us using in Europe.

If Dembele leaves it’s a no-brainer, although it will also depend on what the player wants and how he feels here.

D17- agree, fee quoted was €6-7m,and we probably paid €1m for the loan, to come off the fee,no brainer for me.He looks to have fitted in well and seems popular with the squad.

  15. God his price has jumped by 3 or 4 million after a goal vs. sevco, sign him up, yes but not for 10 million. Still no way of knowing how he will do in the team week in week out.

I think we need to be promotion young atchison up ro the first team next Year alongside griff and dembele or Eduard or another.

  16. One wonders why the BBC Scotland are this week running an anti-sectarian item, including interviewing James Dornan, THE proponent of the OBAF act? Would last week not have been a better time to do so or is it because their team got beat at the weekend?

Their hurt is obscuring the fact that there is adequate legislation on the statute books (and has been for years) to deal with sectarianism but it is unused because the deid team’s follow followers would be the ones to suffer.

Subliminally too, they use a photo on their website who seems to show us predominantly.

  17. Signing Edouard cannot be assessed as much of a risk when put in comparison with the £3 million plus blown this season on ‘sure thing’ PR7.

We won’t see that again, or PR7, whereas, an injured player who belongs to US, will have time to pay back the club’s investment in him.

Dont know what the odds on Celtic signing Odsonne are but at 5/6 mill, worth a wee gamble I think.

NO! I don’t think canines should be spoiled by getting treats just for looking cute or having big appealing eyes.

Canines should earn their keep by biting chunks out of burglars, herding sheep or sniffing out drugs!

I think we will sign Odsonne regardless of whether Moussa stays or goes, as BR stated we need to have the replacement ready once our developing players move on.

We will be robust in our robustlious robustness….

Robust- political speak for being clueless

  24. We should sign OE. However, £x million spent on OE leaves £x million less to spend on other areas of the team. Think we’re OK for midfielders. Expect something to be spent on defence though…

  25. Celtic are being linked with a summer move for Greek international defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos.

The 26-year-old looks like he’ll be leaving Hamburg this summer at the Scottish champions are one of the sides looking at bringing him in.

Brendan Rodgers has been a long-time admirer of the Greek defender and wanted to sign him when he was in charge at Liverpool, but the Reds decided to sign Mamadou Sakho instead as there were concerns about Papadopoulos’ knee.

However, he’s stayed relatively healthily this season and has played 25 times for Hamburg and therefore, Rodgers could be tempted to bring him to Celtic Park.

Papadopoulos, whilst lacking in height, is known for his physical slyer of play and for his leadership, two things that Celtic’s backline has lacked at times this season.

If he does leave Hamburg, interest will likely be high but Celtic would certainly have a chance to get him.

  26. Not really a huge gamble.

Top up the Van Dijk cash and for £2m we will have a ready made replacement for the departing Moussa (who will leave for North of £15m)

Edouard reminds me of Sammy…coming off the left cutting inside…tall rangy clumsy at times but a talent who will infuriate and split the support…we’ve a few more games to size him up before we need to make an offer..great weekend Springsteen Sessions and pumping Sevco…
