Odsonne and breaking the €10m barrier

320

Odsonne Edouard, who turned 20 in January, is at the pivotal season of his career.  He scored lots of goals at youth level but was heading nowhere at PSG before Brendan Rodgers made the trip to Paris to encourage him to come to Glasgow.

His stats until that point were meagre: one goal in 16 appearances on loan at Toulouse, but Celtic scouted him thoroughly and all were convinced of his potential.  After settling into life in Glasgow, he is beginning to fulfil some of that potential, Sunday’s winning goal being the clearest example.

In only two months Brendan will decide whether to spend €10m on him or let him return to PSG.  For Celtic, this is a serious gamble, but I expect them to take it.

The club have money to spend right now, but being able to spend it as effectively as you would like is another story.  €10m on a striker guarantees you nothing, not even a resale value.  Then consider the contract a €10m striker would want.  The club know well how difficult it is to sign anyone who has clearly demonstrated they are ready to take on the Champions League.  To improve players at this level, we need to graduate them through the final phase of their development here.

If we are to break the €10m barrier, and I think we should, we need to be sure we can improve him and that he has the right attitude to the game.  If Brendan is convinced on these questions, Celtic will exercise their option and sign him on a permanent deal. But even after a year’s trial, it is a huge gamble.

Oh La La! I found this on a search for something else. Not all Frenchmen in green and white were cheered at Celtic Park .I loved them and their fans in Glasgow a few years later.

*thanks for that, I was at that game but its the first time I’ve seen footage of it, I believe its the only time we wore the all white strip.

If my memory serves me well In the original draw we were drawn against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros but after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia Bob Kelly refused to travel to Hungary in protest. Other countries followed our lead and some Eastern Bloc countries then boycotted the competition in protest.

In the rearranged draw we were drawn against St Etienne who had 6 internationals in their squad so it looked as if it had backfired as we lost 0-2 in the first leg.

Just reading that now, thanks for the heads up ,always catching upon our Celtic news here in Oz.

Well done both lhads, maybe we won’t need to rush and buy a goalie, wonder what Tom thinks?

*There’s also our goalie coach taking a similar position with the national side. We have had plenty of young goalies who have not been able to make the step up tae the first team Scott Fox who made it into the Scotland u/19 and u/20 squads and Michael McGovern the current NI goalie come tae mind.

We love tae talk eloquently about great goalies like Charlie Shaw, John Thomson, Joe Kenneway, Willie Miller and George Hunter but only 3 of them came through the ranks, the other 2 Charlie and Joe were seasoned professionals before signing for us.

Being a Celtic goalie requires a lot of concentration as there’s a lot of down time mibbees that’s the difference between making it or no, although both Willie and George played in poor Celtic sides so were more in action than others, you can add Frank Haffey tae that but he was another unpredictable one even though he gained a couple of caps. He actually left a month after the Faither arrived for what was supposed to be back up tae John Fallon who then lost his place tae the more experienced Ronnie who epitomized concentration.

Marspapa it’s nearer 6-7 mil less the loan fee…..i think we will be tapping up a few guys going out of contract, hopefully 2 CBs..HH

Personally I wouldn’t give them more than 4 mill , maybe a bigger cut of sell on .

We need cover in defence , Goalkeeper? , 2 Cb’s and a Rb.

If we went into Europe with the same squad (fit), our attacking options wouldn’t phase me, can’t say the same for the defense. IMHO.

  9. IF you’ve always dreamed of a career at (the)Rangers Football Club, look no further as the Evening Times presents an ideal role.

They’re not looking for footballers (sorry if we built up your hopes), but the Ibrox ground is on the hunt for an experienced (gullible)electrician.

The successful candidate will provide maintenance and repairs to the business electrical systems and

report to the facilities maintenance supervisors for both Ibrox Stadium and the training ground.

  10. Just logged on and read the article. Sounds a wee bit like expectations management. I hope Odsonne scores a bundle of goals between now and the end of the season so that the Board simply have to pay the money.

  11. Eddie, 10 million,no way,at best 3 million, but what about Griffith’s,I reckon Celtic, could get at least 12 million for him,and I still say O’Donnell,at Killie, would be a good addition at Celtic, also what’s happening with the Hotel, the New Superstore, and Ticket Office, Museum, etc

Oldbhoy- teams know we have money to spend, if we can build a relationship with PSG, might work out well for us- minus the politics.HH

  14. I think Edouard is still a bit rew, if the fee were around £5m then fair enough. Id also like to see us sign Patrick Roberts and John McGinn. If all those transfer fees came in at around £18m, take £7m off for the van Dijk money and sell one of our current midfielders. I would hate to lose an Armstrong or a Rogic but I think we need to trim the team a bit. I’d sell Gamboa and Kouassi as well. IT probably won’t happen and we’ll be lucky to get one of them but that’s my wish list.

  16. The lump of wood playing for Sevilla last night, who cost 17 million, hooked to let a real striker on,should tell you all what the going price is for player like Eddy in the real world.

The price we were quoted to sign him permanently wa 7 million pounds.

    An absolute steal nowadays.

  17. Eddie doing his hunskelpin routine and BR’s glowing praise for him are enough for this armchair CEO to sanction the deal!

The more so as Moussa won’t be here for a testimonial and Le Griff can’t be relied upon to be fit.

Brendan will think about signing the Greek later. He’s got too much on his Plato at the moment.

  19. What made me think Eduard has what it takes was the dink he made to Dembele that led to the Tierney goal against Aberdeen. The mark of a top class player in the making. I think we should sign him.

  20. We should beware of a Greek bearing gifts. Poor Dedryck has that sewn up right now.

Is he a Stallion, donkey or a Trojan Horse?
