Odsonne and breaking the €10m barrier

320

Odsonne Edouard, who turned 20 in January, is at the pivotal season of his career.  He scored lots of goals at youth level but was heading nowhere at PSG before Brendan Rodgers made the trip to Paris to encourage him to come to Glasgow.

His stats until that point were meagre: one goal in 16 appearances on loan at Toulouse, but Celtic scouted him thoroughly and all were convinced of his potential.  After settling into life in Glasgow, he is beginning to fulfil some of that potential, Sunday’s winning goal being the clearest example.

In only two months Brendan will decide whether to spend €10m on him or let him return to PSG.  For Celtic, this is a serious gamble, but I expect them to take it.

The club have money to spend right now, but being able to spend it as effectively as you would like is another story.  €10m on a striker guarantees you nothing, not even a resale value.  Then consider the contract a €10m striker would want.  The club know well how difficult it is to sign anyone who has clearly demonstrated they are ready to take on the Champions League.  To improve players at this level, we need to graduate them through the final phase of their development here.

If we are to break the €10m barrier, and I think we should, we need to be sure we can improve him and that he has the right attitude to the game.  If Brendan is convinced on these questions, Celtic will exercise their option and sign him on a permanent deal. But even after a year’s trial, it is a huge gamble.

BBC Scotland main Bulletin…………..bounces……. back by Wednesday with a report on Sectarianism and leads

    with IRA singing complaints

    ————————————————–

You should listen to BBC Scotland radio – unbelievable.

I fired off a few messages to them to set them straight on a few things

  2. BBC News channel carrying a ‘damning’ report on sectarianism in Scottish football, reported by Chris McLaughlin – who opens the evidence by citing songs ‘in support of the IRA’.

    Sectarianism?

Does Chris have a dictionary? Does anyone at BBC Scotland? Does anyone there, intoxicated in their whataboutery, know the difference between the words, ‘sectarian’ and ‘political’?

Chris, if you’re looking in – and we know you do… – let’s not conflate historical, tribal rebel songs with the vomitous hate and bile aimed at a religion and a nationality by the jackbooted vermin Huns and filthy Orange bastards who soil the soul of this blighted wee country. Grow some balls.

    Ffs…

  3. Ken Dodd.

This from his infamous tax trial

Dodd: I had some trouble with the tax…….my accountant died

Brian Leveson Did that really matter?

Dodd: Well it mattered to him

    Ken Dodd RIP

I don’t get the chance to see Celtic “in the flesh” but was at CP when we thumped Motherwell 5-1.

Edouard was excellent that day – not just on the basis that he scored a hat trick – but his general link play, skill and awareness stood out.

I would sign him – but is he better suited to playing two up front?

By extension any Celtic song is regarded as sectarian in ‘modern’ Scotland, and one of the main reasons the OBA was binned.

Thats why they say ( Sectarian OR Offensive ) if anybody challenges the use of the word sectarian as the criminal defence lawyers do regularly, the charge reverts to offensive.

Which of course covers all bases.

  6. WITS: yes, Liam Óg a huge loss to Irish music.

Btw, our work-based bet came in – €460. Cheers for the tips.

I have not listened to Shortbread tonight but I will not be in the least surprised if Radio Scotland continues its inevitable slide into the very grubber of reporting standards.

The station has ceased to offer any semblence of editorial objectivity for a long time now and has become the News of The World of Radio.

A disgrace for a so called state broadcaster.

  8. Chris McLaughlin is journalism at it’s poor Scottish best, gutless to the extreme and keen to do his masters bidding when the Orcs come unstuck…

But let’s face it soon he’ll be reporting on the huns own ten in a row, it’s bound to happen sooner or later, ten hun managers seen off by the inimitable Mr Rodgers:)))

  9. Evening all.

Some brilliant posts on the blog tonight. Keep ’em coming please. HH

Hard to say about Edouard …. what I would say is that he has tremendous potential (I would say more thatn Roberts and maybe even more than Dembele) …. but he is raw and is still developing as a player …

and what I like most about him is that he is not a one-note type of player … and he seems to be a smart player …

some young players come up and score a barrowload because they are exceptionally fast, or are physically bigger, but rely on that one ‘skil;l’ …. watching him, he has it all … an eye for a goal, as well as a pass … is a bit of a beast, but is still growing …. and players who dont have just one arrow in their quiver sometimes take a bit longer to develop…

I think the player we will be seeing next season will be very different from (and much better than) the player we are watching now….

I think this kid has everything needed to go to the very top …. would be thrilled if we signed him… but not sure whether we can afford the wages he will want (and will likely be offered elsewhere).

  13. Cannot help feeling that some of Paul’s h.eadlines and articles are becoming ‘squirrels’ or ‘boardlines’ for whatever purpose.

  14. MIKE IN TORONTO, if you throw in a percentage of what your on, and dont give seamus larsson so many treats, we could afford him lol.

  15. I’m glad I’m not in charge of the purse strings at Celtic… I would love them to sign Edouard but I wanted them to break the bank to sign Gudetti and Odegaard so what do I know?

  16. From bhoy magic twitter.

@Auldheid @Green20William This put out one day after Doncaster climbs onboard? Looks to me they’re trying to fool some by kidding on the SFA can be trusted to apply rules. Not on your life can they be trusted.

  17. Bhoy magic twitter.

@Auldheid @Green20William Doncaster the one most peddling same club lie. Will this ‘same club’ be sanctioned from uefa competitions under disciplinary procedure?

    Auldheid’s reply

@bhoymagic @Green20William They are not blaming Res12. The are saying CO investigation triggered after CW court case 9 months ago gave them cause to pause on fit and proper. And so it should have. It’s the fact it’s making news that is interesting.

    Bhoy magic’s reply.

@Auldheid @Green20William SFA have a F&P process. Same one King went through. Johnson should have been subject to it on appointment at Ibrox. What was it that prevented it or is there a backtrack/swizzle going on?

  18. The Green Brigade will have to up their standards if they want a better tifo than the Sevco’s wonderful “magic eye” one… I think I saw a dolphin

  19. seriously can anyone tell me what songs we sing are sectarian, right as a teenager i used to sing the merry ploughboy, apart from the reference to the queen at the end was that sectarian, the soldiers song is that sectarian, sean south is that sectarian ,the black velvet band is that sectarian well those were the songs i sung at parkhead late sixties early seventies please tell me, am i a bigot for singing those songs, and by the way if you think i should not have sung those songs please tell me.hh.

Looks like the news from the CW trial on when liability finally grabbed SFA attention 9 months ago.

Why the same information from Res12 lawyer did not have same impact in 2015 is a question the SFA probably don’t want to be asked or answer.

Alisdair Johnson was the Rangers Chairman who put his name to Rangers Interim Accs on 1st April 2011.

@Auldheid @TamMcKenna1888 @Green20William Only because Celtic have a solid case on uefa license fraud. They know Celtic do not ultimately require this matter to be dealt with within scottish football fraternity. Uefa fraud had direct impact on Celtic while EBT’s impacted all clubs rfc played.

    Big Packy …

in light of your comment, I will still bail you out of jail when you get knicked while you are in Toronto (and, as a side note, I know a few cops, so I can pretty much guarantee that it is going to happen!) …. and I will charge you time and a half for the privilege!

    :)

  23. Celtic can afford the wages of about players value in the 6 or 7 million pound bracketed but we carry such a massive squad which kills us. The bigger the squad the further the wages have to stretch.

A 22 man squad means 11 injuries leave you with 11 players, thats before you go into the development and academy squad which gives you another 40 players.

We need 22 first team players only.

Better quality players can train better and force improvement in that group as well as, the academy bhoys that get the nod if required or good enough.

  24. meanwhile,

as sectarianism is the subject of real crap bbc journalism,
