Oh exactly fills a Giakoumakis size hole

295

The most trailed transfer of the window, Hyeongyu Oh (21), was confirmed this morning when Celtic announced the striker will join the club, subject to international clearance.  2022 was Hyeongyu’s breakthrough year when he established himself as first choice striker for Suwon Bluewings.

13 league goals in 24 starts was a decent return in a team that finished in a relegation play-off spot.  His final contribution to Suwon was the extra-time – last minute – winner that kept them in the topflight.

At 6’1”, he is 6 inches taller than Kyogo, or put it another way, he exactly fits a Giorgos Giakoumakis sized hole.  There is no coincidence here, I expect we will see Giorgos leave as soon as Hyeongyu’s clearance is confirmed.

Oh has made 93 career appearances, which is higher than most young players we recruit from European markets.  What is different about his stats is that as recently as 2021, the majority of his appearances were in the lower leagues, and most of them as substitute.  As a prospect, his story is all about what happened in 2022.

Another aspect to check when players arrive from far flung fields is how well we can expect them to adapt to our ‘refreshing’ climate.  It is currently -8 and raining in Suwon, so Lennoxtown will feel mild to him this morning.

The suburbs of Seoul are a long way from Glasgow, the weather might be kinder, but the food, language, coaching and style of play will all be different.  The player will take time to settle (just as Giorgos did).

Welcome to Celtic, Hyeongyu!

    CANAMALAR

Why no apparent intrest from England or any other top leafue. Top scorer in Holland and top scorer in Scotland, and yet a J league team and a MLS team are his suitors.

    Doesnt make sense to me

    NOTTHEBUS… aye it seems a head-scratcher.

One thing to deduce is that the SPFL is evidently not held in very high regard around the footballing world. Meaning just becos GG can score in Scotland doesnt mean he’ll do the same at Eng Championship level far less EPL, Serie A or Ligue 1 comps.

That said, Atlanta (if that’s his goal) get a surprisingly healthy average attendance of around 45,000 in MLS. Miles better than I thought they’d get.

    Whodathunkdat?

  2. I hope he can trap a cement bag as Giacomakis struggled. The big man was a one touch striker who knows where the goal was. Oh at 21 has a lot to learn. We have a tendency to try and walk the ball in. I hope Oh can shoot

    Bigbhoy,

Disagree on GG, I thought he was/is excellent at holding the ball and distributing it, when lone target man up front.

    Hebcelt update.

    Morning AT

I was talking to MrsHebcelt and himself earlier this morning. He’s doing really well. Lots to say but can’t get the words out in order and still a bit jumbled up. He’s fit and up doing chores around the house. He was a bit lazy before the stroke but now he can’t sit still. MrsHebcelt said the biggest thing she noticed is his humour is back, just by looking at her she’s noticed he’s taking the piss ……so that’s definitely Louis much better……

So its positive news for Hebcelt. A great Celt

    Hail Hail

You must have been watching a different GG from me.

    Very poor first touch.

He was a penalty box player and centres nowadays, need to have more than that.

If we make a profit, we’ll be doing well.

    St Tams,

Or maybe I did not focus on his mistakes and blow them out of proportion.

  7. If GG is for the off, I really wish his cracking header that hit the bar the other week had gone in

  8. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

I don’t believe he had a poor first touch too often, in fact that supposed poor first touch scored plenaty of goals and sent players on their way to scoring goals.

  9. We’re dealing with some unknowns here.

We do know GG was a very useful back up striker for us and we never saw any signs of dissent or trouble when he played.

Oh looks good on his showreel but hasn’t played for us yet- hasn’t proved or disproved his worth as an upgrade. Only time will tel us if this is a good move.

The bit we need to pay attention to is that the more highly rated S. Korean striker was so reluctant to agree to come to us that he preferred 6 more months in the K league.

    SFTB,

His reluctance may have been a demonstration of his commitment to his team and his support to help them remain in the top flight, I’d mark that down as a plus if indeed the case.

If so you can’t blame him, after all as soon as/if he becomes valuable we will punt him anyway.

Opps I couldn’t keep track of which player you were talking about.

Will certainly do that mate,i will check in wi my contact, another good Celt every couple of weeks:)

Special breed of Celts up there,

    Hail Hail

  15. As a reminder. This was Ange. Fully on board. Don’t get too attached to these players. Buy low, develop and sell on for a profit. Repeat and rinse. Win everything locally and make progress in Yurp.

“Aggressive in the transfer market – it could be unsettling with players in and out quickly but if you look at the models of clubs our size they’re very agile.

“Every couple of years they regenerate and move players out at the right time with improved players in.

“We need to push aggressively over the next two to three years, first qualifying and then making an impact.”

The barman puts down his towel, thinking for a second, “what colour of wrapper was he wearing?

Canamalar – I wouldn’t take it as personal. I’m sure the Mod was only cherry-picking your stuff.

Welcome Hyeongyu, we hope you’re a good fit with us. I want GG to stay to provide three 9s in a match day squad.

  17. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    SFTB,

So players thinking they can get better opportunities and conditions elsewhere is not a problem then. 6more months in the K-league is/was probably more lucrative. If we want to attract them we should at least make them an offer that will tempt them.

    GuyFawkesaforeverhero,

I really don’t give a monkeys, however I’m still confused why all of Angry FFM’s posts were deleted, he said nothing offensive. Which I would consider personal if I was him.

Certainly a clean sweep, I didn’t read anything from Angry FFM earlier, which was the Mod’s purpose I suppose.

    ———————————————————————————————–

At the other end of the line-up, Dane Murray has been out for ten months now since walking off Dalbeattie Star’s pitch, limping.

I thought he out shone Bosun Lawal via Celtic TV last season in the 1-1 Glasgow Cup tie where Ben Doak demonstrated a Daniel Arzani level of commitment to our cause. It would be good to hear he’s on the comeback trail.

  20. canamalar

It is a reality. Nobody from Japan, S. Korea or Australia comes with a view that Celtic is their final destination or ultimate goal. If they are willing to come, they will be coming for increased wages AND a chance to expose their talents to bigger clubs and bigger leagues. I am long past raging or taking offence at that reality.

We offered a fee for Cho that was acceptable to his club and a salary level that was far better than K league could offer. However he wanted to go to Mainz in Germany, who we outbid in terms of fee and wages. When Mainz withdrew, Cho was faced only with accepting or rejecting Celtic’s offer and he rejected it. He is not staying 6 months more in Korea to earn more or even to expose himself. He is staying in the hope that a German club will come in for him again, or failing that, another big league club.

In his view Mainz is a better destination for him than Glasgow Celtic. I don’t see it that way. You don’t see it that way but Cho does.

  21. Lawwell involved in latest Celtic signing after all. Nicholson too!!

Ange said [Celtic TV]: “Really pleased; (Hyeongyu Oh) is someone Mark Lawwell and myself sort of identified really early on in the piece, and we thought he would be the first one through the door.

“But it’s fair to say it’s taken a while to get negotiations done and to get him here. And, really credit to the player himself and Michael Nicholson for their perseverance because there were times when I thought it wasn’t going to happen or lost a bit of heart.

“But they both persevered to get it done. So it’s great to ha ve him here, I’m sure he’ll add to our football club; really excited by the potential he has, but also the impact he can make straight away.

madmitch was constantly calling for Dane Murray to be fast-tracked form the B team, based on that one match too. He was absolutely unaware of the fact that Dane was crocked and incapable of playing anywhere.

I, too, wish the boy the best but ……….. he has missed a season through Covid lockdown followed by a season of being crocked. he needs to re-establish at B team level before we start talking about any other level of football.

In the meantime, Bosun has played constantly and improved. He is ready to be one of our back up CBs as I expect Jenz and Welsh to leave. It is a huge step up from 5th tier to 1st and I would prefer that Bosun, who is already well developed physically, could find a Championship club in Scotland or a League One club in England to develop him tactically.
