Oh exactly fills a Giakoumakis size hole

295

The most trailed transfer of the window, Hyeongyu Oh (21), was confirmed this morning when Celtic announced the striker will join the club, subject to international clearance.  2022 was Hyeongyu’s breakthrough year when he established himself as first choice striker for Suwon Bluewings.

13 league goals in 24 starts was a decent return in a team that finished in a relegation play-off spot.  His final contribution to Suwon was the extra-time – last minute – winner that kept them in the topflight.

At 6’1”, he is 6 inches taller than Kyogo, or put it another way, he exactly fits a Giorgos Giakoumakis sized hole.  There is no coincidence here, I expect we will see Giorgos leave as soon as Hyeongyu’s clearance is confirmed.

Oh has made 93 career appearances, which is higher than most young players we recruit from European markets.  What is different about his stats is that as recently as 2021, the majority of his appearances were in the lower leagues, and most of them as substitute.  As a prospect, his story is all about what happened in 2022.

Another aspect to check when players arrive from far flung fields is how well we can expect them to adapt to our ‘refreshing’ climate.  It is currently -8 and raining in Suwon, so Lennoxtown will feel mild to him this morning.

The suburbs of Seoul are a long way from Glasgow, the weather might be kinder, but the food, language, coaching and style of play will all be different.  The player will take time to settle (just as Giorgos did).

Welcome to Celtic, Hyeongyu!

Imagine Giorgios Giakoumakis is keeping his options open just like the window, where he’ll sign for the best wage on offer. Just the same as he did when only wee Celtic outbid everyone to get him as Eredivsie’s top man.

  12. The “other” south Korean striker, Cho Gue-sung was always after a move to the EPL. After much flirting with Celtic which didn’t generate the expected EPL interest he eventually admitted as much in a press conference. He’s also a Korean pin-up boy, so would be looking for a market where he could better leverage that aspect of his portfolio. He’s 25 (happy birthday Cho), and as such would look at the Juranovic situation as a player joining Celtic at the same age. Juranovic needed an exceptional world cup to gain a move, and then only to a punchy but mediocre German team. For Jura that opportunity to propel his profile fortuitously came at 27, which is possibly as late as it gets for our players. The next world cup is 4 years away by which time Cho would be 29.

I can regret the ones that slipped through our fingers, but I don’t think Cho seriously considered Celtic. His focus was and remains elsewhere.

My route as well. Thought through the 77 final team and matched it with lions and came up with Joe and jim as only matches.

Remembered Reading in the Tom Campbell “Glasgow Celtic 45-70 “ book about Billy Craig and Bobby Craig both being “surprise picks” for the Hearts and deidco finals of 56 and 63, although I can’t remember in which of the two finals each of them played.

A great read by the way if you have never seen it. Got it as a Christmas present from my godmother over 50 years ago and still look at it every so often. Draws a lot on contemporary news reports of the 50s and 60s, particularly Cyril Horne in the Herald.

  20. When we signed Patrick Kilmala his coach said that he needed to improve on his finishing .

This concerned me ,as finishing is a priority strength that is required for a goal scorer.

I’m now concerned that football experts in South Korea ,state that he needs to improve his finishing .

His work rate seems to be his biggest strength .

His you tube clips show him missing quite a few chances.

    Hopefully my concerns aren’t justified.

    Good Luck to the bhoy.

I posted this question at 12.28; Four players same surname appeared in Scottish Cup Finals in 55,63,67 and 77

Extra clue: To help with surname was;Celtic player came on as sub for Scotland v Sweden and scored before he had even kicked the ball.

Billy Craig 1955: Sean Fallons brother-in – law.

Bobby Craig 1963: Played in SCF at the expense of Jinky.

    Jim Craig1967: Enough said.

Joe Craig !977: Scored with a header v Sweden.

memories came flooding back there, the Tom Campbell Glasgow (note) Celtic 45-70 BOOK.

We had a copy in the old grandas house, kept in a suitcase with hundreds and hundreds of celtic views and press clippings, I must have read it a thousand times as a bhoy. I need to find out if my youngest uncle still has them all.

I searched for a copy, nothing on line, must be scarce i would think.

There was another book, maybe early 80s it got published, had all the stats from every game.

Another uncles party trick was for the kids to pick a fixture, date and venue, he wuld tell us the score, scores, Celtic team and attendance.

I think that is where i get my fascination for celtic stattos.

as an aside, my granda when i was very young, a favourite pass time with old granda was to read him match reports and celtic views, he said saving his eyes, and e used to laugh that i could get the words right.

    all our yesterdays sigh.
