Oh exactly fills a Giakoumakis size hole

295

The most trailed transfer of the window, Hyeongyu Oh (21), was confirmed this morning when Celtic announced the striker will join the club, subject to international clearance.  2022 was Hyeongyu’s breakthrough year when he established himself as first choice striker for Suwon Bluewings.

13 league goals in 24 starts was a decent return in a team that finished in a relegation play-off spot.  His final contribution to Suwon was the extra-time – last minute – winner that kept them in the topflight.

At 6’1”, he is 6 inches taller than Kyogo, or put it another way, he exactly fits a Giorgos Giakoumakis sized hole.  There is no coincidence here, I expect we will see Giorgos leave as soon as Hyeongyu’s clearance is confirmed.

Oh has made 93 career appearances, which is higher than most young players we recruit from European markets.  What is different about his stats is that as recently as 2021, the majority of his appearances were in the lower leagues, and most of them as substitute.  As a prospect, his story is all about what happened in 2022.

Another aspect to check when players arrive from far flung fields is how well we can expect them to adapt to our ‘refreshing’ climate.  It is currently -8 and raining in Suwon, so Lennoxtown will feel mild to him this morning.

The suburbs of Seoul are a long way from Glasgow, the weather might be kinder, but the food, language, coaching and style of play will all be different.  The player will take time to settle (just as Giorgos did).

Welcome to Celtic, Hyeongyu!

No quibbles from me there, only hoping Dane’s working his way back. My hope is one of our bloggers will ask for an update then let the general support know.

I understand his contract with the club runs to 2024, so losing two years on the pitch for a teenager who’s been a group leader through his growing years (did us yahoos a turn v Midtjylland in a qualifier) must have been devastating for him.

Re the St.Mirren game at Ibrox 1962.

That was the first’big’ game my dad took me to as a youngster . There was a lot of trouble afterwards with fans on the pitch throwing bottles into our own fans . As I had only ever been to reserve games before , it was a scary experience with bottles crashing around us . When my mother found out about the near riot , she wouldn’t let me go with my dad to another big game . Fortunately she relented by the 1965 cup final!

    HH to diversity.

  12. FOR YOU JOE:

    Michael Craig 93/94

Michael Craig was former Celtic assistant manager Tommy Craig’s nephew. He was signed as an S-Former to the Club at the age of 13 and played with Celtic Boys Club though he mainly continued to play in the Aberdeen area where he was brought up. In 1992 he made the Scotland U15 team. He joined the Celtic groundstaff full time in 1993/94.

In 1994/95 he continued on the groundstaff and played in the U19 squad. He was a Scotland U17 player this season and went to International Youth Tournament, Kearney, USA with U18’s. He played most of the season as striker with the U18’s stepping up to the Reserves from time to time. He was rated highly by MacAdam and Connor.

After a good run with the Reserves he made his debut with the first team as a sub in the Scottish Cup game against Meadowbank which Celtic easily won 3-0.

He was expected to go on and win a starting place with the first team however with his uncle’s departure and being out of contract at the end of the season he left at the end of the season.

It was a tough era for any young player to make a breakthrough with Celtic desperate to stop Ranges matching and surpassing nine-in-a-row which hindered opportunities to bleed in youngsters.

He was offered new terms but chose to join Aberdeen teaming up with his uncle again on 21 July 1995. Farmed out to East End Juniors before making a League debut in the final game of 1995/96. Went to Euro ’96 as a “squad butler” and was also capped when his uncle was Scotland U21 coach.

He was at Aberdeen for three years before being released and joining Montrose in December 1998. Seemingly Alex Miller had not rated him as highly as Roy Aitken did. In 2000/01 he played for Huntly.

Spent 2001 in Australia as player/coach of Yoogali and despite reported interest from Sydney Olympic and Paramatta Power, he returned to Glentanar Juniors for 2002/03.
