Oh exactly fills a Giakoumakis size hole

The most trailed transfer of the window, Hyeongyu Oh (21), was confirmed this morning when Celtic announced the striker will join the club, subject to international clearance.  2022 was Hyeongyu’s breakthrough year when he established himself as first choice striker for Suwon Bluewings.

13 league goals in 24 starts was a decent return in a team that finished in a relegation play-off spot.  His final contribution to Suwon was the extra-time – last minute – winner that kept them in the topflight.

At 6’1”, he is 6 inches taller than Kyogo, or put it another way, he exactly fits a Giorgos Giakoumakis sized hole.  There is no coincidence here, I expect we will see Giorgos leave as soon as Hyeongyu’s clearance is confirmed.

Oh has made 93 career appearances, which is higher than most young players we recruit from European markets.  What is different about his stats is that as recently as 2021, the majority of his appearances were in the lower leagues, and most of them as substitute.  As a prospect, his story is all about what happened in 2022.

Another aspect to check when players arrive from far flung fields is how well we can expect them to adapt to our ‘refreshing’ climate.  It is currently -8 and raining in Suwon, so Lennoxtown will feel mild to him this morning.

The suburbs of Seoul are a long way from Glasgow, the weather might be kinder, but the food, language, coaching and style of play will all be different.  The player will take time to settle (just as Giorgos did).

    I watch Celtic in here, it’s a good wee local bar across from the Harding, my usual hotel. €5 in this town is cheap as you know. Never been in the pub you mentioned. I think 🤔.

    Rumours that GG tried to walk back his position on wanting to leave but Ange not having it. Who knows if true. We accepted a bid from Japanese club last week so stands to reason GG doesn’t want to go there as he’s now being linked with Atlanta. Why is he not away?

     

     

    Seems to me many supporters missing bigger picture when it comes to GG, what Ange sees every day in training and in dressing room. Attitude, application and influence on team dynamic are aspects supporters know nothing about. Players with an eye elsewhere are absolutely toxic at a football club, just ask Pep Guardiola who runs them out of the door.

     

     

    I believe we have 3 players who are currently indispensable, CCV, Calum and Kyogo. Anyone else who wants to go can leave and will in most cases be replaceable.

    Gary, That game in Cork was at the Mardyke, not far from where I grew up.

     

    It would have been an Exhibition game, they were all the vogue in those years.

     

    Celtic would regularly come across & play a couple of pre season Exhibition games,

     

    I would have been 12 yrs old for that game, I can’t remember being there but I do remember being at a few Celtic v Cork Hibs games in my early teens.

    Who or what started this obsession with the size and shape of any player-related orifices, the size and shape of which is their own private business and has little to do – surely – with their physical attributes or playing ability?

     

     

    Downunder, it’s a public celebration of Australia Day or, increasingly, resentful objection over Invasion/Survival Day.
