The most trailed transfer of the window, Hyeongyu Oh (21), was confirmed this morning when Celtic announced the striker will join the club, subject to international clearance. 2022 was Hyeongyu’s breakthrough year when he established himself as first choice striker for Suwon Bluewings.
13 league goals in 24 starts was a decent return in a team that finished in a relegation play-off spot. His final contribution to Suwon was the extra-time – last minute – winner that kept them in the topflight.
At 6’1”, he is 6 inches taller than Kyogo, or put it another way, he exactly fits a Giorgos Giakoumakis sized hole. There is no coincidence here, I expect we will see Giorgos leave as soon as Hyeongyu’s clearance is confirmed.
Oh has made 93 career appearances, which is higher than most young players we recruit from European markets. What is different about his stats is that as recently as 2021, the majority of his appearances were in the lower leagues, and most of them as substitute. As a prospect, his story is all about what happened in 2022.
Another aspect to check when players arrive from far flung fields is how well we can expect them to adapt to our ‘refreshing’ climate. It is currently -8 and raining in Suwon, so Lennoxtown will feel mild to him this morning.
The suburbs of Seoul are a long way from Glasgow, the weather might be kinder, but the food, language, coaching and style of play will all be different. The player will take time to settle (just as Giorgos did).
Welcome to Celtic, Hyeongyu!

Good luck to our new recruit but I wish we could also keep Giaka.

I’ve not been following so I don’t know if this has already been aired…
With so many Asians now in Celtic’s squad, the could be a big risk down the line, most probably when Postecoglu decides that it’s time to move on.
Undoubtedly his Far Eastern background, knowledge and experience have been instrumental in attracting these players to Celtic, but when he goes there is a danger that we will face a major exodus from this same cohort, particularly if the playing style and training methods are changed by the new manager.
We could be left having to hurriedly replace at least half a dozen of the first team squad in one transfer window. And with the time it might take for such a large group of new players to gel and build a similar team spirit, we would certainly be facing the prospect of a significant “transition” (aka trophyless?) season.
Just a thought.

I would be surprised if any new manager stuck to Ange’s style of play. So whatever the demographic there will be a big change which will impact the players wanting to leave/stay.
Good morning from a dry North Staffs

On the other hand having a group from the same background should make it easier to settle in.
I don’t think Ange’s style is unique by any means
“I don’t think Ange’s style is unique by any means”
Correct nor is it prolific………
Good morning all from Dublin.

still laughing my head off
that would be like the missus offering me a roll-n-shyte for my breakfast – no thanks
Zero interest in Morelos or Kent. That much has been clear this window. My money is on both signing new contracts at Ibrox and being lauded as £30 million assets that same day.
Interesting the discussions about Ange’s style of a large turnaround of playing staff. I’m sure it has some advantages and disadvantages but I think there can’t be many players in the Celtic squad who feel they a guaranteed a starting place and feel they can coast. The phrase “we never stop” must be at the back of very players mind when they play but also when they are training.
I am also delighted that players sign then are in the first team/squad rather than “getting match fit” for 3 months

Both are 26 so really need to move on. I think someone in England will take Kent in the summer but Morelos could have to sign back on as you say. His prolific scoring in Europe made him a target 3 years ago but not now
No even kicked a baw yet
What happened to the Morelos money?
He invested it in greggs

Kents stats on goals and assists are very poor, a low ball bid from the English championship is possible. As for the fat one his reputation and current weight/fitness makes me wonder who the hell would take the chance.
Currently Kent and Morelos want money the huns won’t pay in terms of salary. That leaves them open to seeing if anyone else will. If they do they will be off in a shot.
Similar to Goldson last summer. They may have to shave their expectations in the summer. Kent will probably get his wish of more money in the championship but fat boy will just have to accept his place in the food chain – at the front scoffing 12 cheeseburgers…
Eff them both. The huns are skint.

Mick Beale told us, Moreles is the exact same weight he has been for the last 2 seasons, he is not any bigger, he is at his best weight, tipping the scales at an impressive 17 stone and 6 pounds.
If you’re looking for reinvention, their new waif Cantwell’s last competitive goal was nearly 2 years ago….
He’s been living off a season 4 years ago when he scored 7 in the premiership when he scored against Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal….
Maybe Morelos needs the same PR firm in his pursuit….

Thanks for that link.
Genuinely brilliant and made me laugh out loud.
not often a “news ” story can make you do that.
You’ve got to love the MSN.
” Phone rings ”
Morelos agent – ” Hi , is that Inter Milan ?”
IM ” Si”
MA ” I represent Alfredo Morelos and …
IM “Naw”
Click.
MA ” Hello , hello..?”
Evening Times – “Now, that’s a story. Print it ! “
I know that Anje’s signing record Ha’s been good.
Maeda,Hatate ,Kyogo ,as successes.
Ideguchi a failure .
Anje saw all of these players perform several times ,in the flesh .
Where I get concerned is when he ( or any manager ) buys a player based on video evidence and recommendations..
I have seen no record that any of our staff have watched the South Korean in the flesh ,once ,never mind several times..
The same with Bernabia.
This type of recruitment is even more fraught with danger.
Over the years we have wasted multi millions .
Bangura,Baldie,Bayo,Bolingoli,Soro, Barkas.
Just as a snapshot example .
Then there is the expert who decided AJeti would be a better buy than Toney.
Whenever I read or hear that we should put blind faith in trusting our recruitment ,because we have professional experts in charge .
My brain poses the question .

Celtic v St Mirren February 11th
5.30 ko
Jota, O’Riley, Juranovic, CCV, Abada, GG and Haksa all signed outside of Ange’s japanese bailiwick.
All unknowns with the help of scouts and video.
1. Are they able to play 2. Are they able to play in our system 3. Are they willing to learn and grow under Ange.
We have an identity to plot talent against, a profile that isn’t scatter gun. Players aty the right age.
Trust the process.
