OH NO, OH YES

FORMER Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-jun was a sinner and a winner as Genk piled the misery on Russell Martin with a 1-0 Europa League win at Ibrox.

The South Korean international returned to haunt the crisis-hit gaffer with a rollercoaster performance of highs and lows.

Oh, who joined the Belgian club in a £2.5million switch in the summer last year, had admitted he was desperate to score in Govan after firing blanks in the past.

It looked as though it might be a forlorn hope as he squandered a penalty-kick and had two astonishing misses smack in front of goal, all in the first-half.

OH NO…the former Celtic striker fires waywardly over the bar

OH NO…culprit Oh Hyeon-jun has his penalty-kick saved by Jack Butland.

OH YES…the Genk hitman claims the only goal with a low drive past Jack Butland.

Oh then had a tap-in at the far post that VAR deemed to be offside, but before that, in the 55th minute, the towering hitman stroked the ball wide of Jack Butland to dump the 10-man hosts who had Mohamed Diomande red-carded following a nasty challenge four minutes from the interval.

The powerful ex-Hoops star had already missed two efforts in open play when the thumped one wildly over the crossbar from six yards with a clear sight of goal which was followed by a mishit at the far post.

Oh was then handed the perfect opportunity when the visitors were awarded a penalty after a VAR review, with James Tavernier clipping Yaimar Medina as he cut into the box from the left.

The striker smashed his attempt from the spot, but it was too close to Jack Butland’s right hand and the keeper pushed the ball to safety.

But Oh finally scored the goal he had craved early in the second half. Jarne Steuckers’ brilliant ball found him running clear and he steered the ball under the advancing Butland.

BIG NOISE…Oh Hyuen-jun celebrates with the Genk fans at Ibrox.

He was booked for his troubles as he celebrated and he rolled in a second with 20 minutes to play, but it was ruled out.

Martin, who has won only four of his 14 games, headed straight up the tunnel at full-time as Ibrox once again erupted in a cacophony of boos and jeers.

The beleaguered boss, who arrived in June, told TNT Sports: “We wanted to be aggressive with the ball to try and cause them problems, then they score a goal we shouldn’t concede.

“But they stuck at it. I’m proud of that second-half. Playing with 10 men for so long against a decent team is not easy, so it is what it is.”

Genk are currently third bottom in the 16-team Pro League.
