OLD BHOY ARMSTRONG’S GOAL

STUART ARMSTRONG, who left Celtic in a £7million summer switch to Southampton, has proved to be an instant hit with his new fans.

The Scotland international midfielder, who was rejuvenated under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers after his arrival at the champions in May 2016, netted his first goal for the club in a 3-2 friendly win against Spaniards Celta Vigo in midweek.

Armstrong played in the first hour of the encounter under the watchful gaze of Mark Hughes who lured him from Parkhead in June.

He said: “In the first-half, we created a good number of chances and maybe should have taken one or two of them.

“Obviously, we were disappointed with the way we conceded goals, but I think it shows good character for the team to come back, win 3-2 and build towards the start of the season.

“I always want to add goals and getting one was a nice bonus, especially at home in my first game in front of the fans.

“That was nice, but, overall, it was just nice to be part of a winning team.”

Armstrong is set to make his Premier League debut at home to Burnley a week on Sunday.

The 26-year-old playmaker scored 28 times in 144 appearances during his three-and-a-half years with the Hoops after signing in a £2million double deal with his Dundee United team -mate Gary Mackay-Steven in January 2015.

The winger is now with Aberdeen after his move last summer.
