Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, please

New Uefa seeding rules this year mean that teams in Champions League Pot 2 have a higher aggregate coefficient value than teams in Pot 1. So Barcelona (we’re bound to avoid them now they look a little lost), Atletico, PSG, Borussia Dortmund and the Manchester twins. Only Sevilla and Porto would provide some comfort, the latter, in particular.

From Pot 1 we could do worse than our old friends Spartak Moscow (18 coefficient points), although Shakhtar Donetsk, Benfica and Monaco would be decent draws.

As our primary objective is to remain in Europe after Christmas, the real battleground for Celtic is in Pot 3. I’d proverbially bite your hand off for Olympiakos, Anderlecht or Besiktas, even Basel would be acceptable. Prefer to avoid the Italians of Napoli and Roma, as well as Liverpool.

Remember, don’t go booking flights before the final confirmation of dates is concluded.

Hospitality for four on Saturday: meals, bar, Directors’ Box tickets, the lot!!

Celtic sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, have offered four full hospitality tickets for Saturday’s game against St Johnstone. You and three friends could benefit from a stunning pre-match meal in the Walfrid, halftime refreshments, as well as a complimentary bar before and after the game.

You will also watch the game from the Directors’ Box. In collaboration with this raffle, we are raising money for Mary’s Meals. Over 3,000 children in Malawi and Liberia eat each school day in a kitchen supported by Celtic Quick News readers. You can donate a minimum of £5 here.

To win, email your MyDonate confirmation to me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the answer to this question IN THE SUBJECT LINE:

How many Champions League qualifying games have Celtic played in the Astana Arena before Tuesday?

Other emails with the correct answer will also be considered. Competition closes at 14:00 THIS AFTERNOON (i.e. minutes away from publication time of this article). You need to be able to collect your tickets in Glasgow on Friday. Please ensure you leave reliable contact information on your email. Good luck!

Remove all the criticism of the group stage being predictable and a procession for the top sides by having an open draw – no seedings or restrictions on who plays who.

  2. Yes, the Pot 3 v Pot 4 battleground is where our main focus should be, (ahem) as I did mention on this very site around 7.15-ish this morning ;-)

  4. Forget ‘glamour’ draws, we want the draw that will make it easiest to qualify for post Xmas European football whether that be CL or EL.

    With that in mind…..

Pot 1 – Spartak, Benfica, Monaco, Shaktar

    Pot 2 – Porto, Sevilla

Pot 3 – Anderlecht, Olympiakos, Basel, Besiktas

A combination from that lot gives us a chance to progress. Save glamour for next phase.

A draw that will give us a fair crack.

Fed up with the group of death nonsense, we always seem to get it tough.

I dont want to play Real, or Barca…..Nawwww:)

  6. went to Fernebahce away no so long ago when during an afternoon bevvy in the local irish bar not far from stadium a group of Fernebahce fans appeared and proceeded to lob fireworks and bottles into pub

luckily police put a cordone between them and us and also put buses before and after match from irish pub to

the stadium which probably prevented carnage

so no Besiktas for me Im sorry to say

Congratulations to Celtic for making it this stage.

Cannot wait to see which group we are placed in.

Some big games guaranteed it has to be said.

  10. iShortie seem to have demoted Celtic and Champions League fitba’ to somewhere beneath Hertz………..

The way I see it is we want a strong team from pot one. I think we are capable of giving anyone a surprise. If we get a win then they will have to try against those we are competing against for third or, dare we hope, second.

  12. Garngad to Croy on

I think we have a high chance of getting a team from England and a team from Spain in our group because we are a this nations only participant. I am hoping to get a couple of good away days out of it .

    Real Madrid

    Manchester United

    Roma

    Celtic

  13. Hoping for no Barcelona as I’m sure everyone is. Unless we get a “easy” group I’d probably prefer a strong Pot 1 and 2 and a really weak (if that’s possible) Pot 3.

  14. The travelling support would prefer glamour ties, or at least a bit of novelty, those who don’t travel would prefer easier, if perhaps less exciting opponents.

I wonder who the players would chose.

    A Napoli blog –

“I Don’t give a shit who We get. . . All I want is Napoli to be focussed and not half asleep..If We get that -who knows ?

  16. From Spain I would like Seville or Real Madrid.

    From England Liverpool or Tottenham

After that maybe Anderlecht as the food in Belgium is good.

No Germans or Italians or Catalonians.

Too efficient: Too dodgy: Too often.

  17. GuyFawkesaforeverhero on

It’ll be fun to watch how the draw pans out this afternoon and all my fingers and toes are crossed for our Pot 3 opponent to be Napoli. A crazy club of mystery and magic to me, ever since those seasons immediately following Argentina’s 1986 World Cup win – 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 1st.

    ————————————————————-

Celtic should indicate to UEFA it’s disquiet about the decision to appoint Scottish officials to one of the four games played this week that influenced our final Pot 3/ Pot 4 status.

  18. Just to be sitting discussing who we may draw is a joy:))))))))

    Thank you Celtic & Brendan.

    Till later all

  19. The only team I want to avoid is Man City. The reason, it might cause problems with Paddy’s loan move. He did score a great goal against them last season.

    French quality, German portions.

Not the friendliest of opponents though (Anderlecht, not the Belgians).

  21. Some lunatics about. The easiest team from the 3 pots please.Stick your “Glamour ties”right up your jacksy.

Some getting a bit beyond themselves.Juve tobe avoided like the plague.Likewise Barca,Real,PSG,Bayern.
