On appointing a manager

145

When appointing a manager I always want a student of the game. Someone who has got there on merit, not because of who he is, or that he will bring some temporary boost to the troops.

Contrast John Barnes with some Aussie-Greek who had been re-writing record books across the Pacific region.  You don’t want the candidate qualified by fame alone.

Occasionally, Scottish clubs looked to Scandinavia for their students. Celtic had Ronny, Aberdeen went back for Jimmy Thelin decades after their first venture north.  German coaches are strutting their stuff across the Continent and Motherwell found their current boss there. He’s done very well, albeit with a small sample size.

In the name of all that is sacred, let Newco appoint Steven Gerrard.  His previous term there was judged successful having won one trophy in nine. That came in a season which saw Celtic capitulate on all fronts.

St Johnstone won both cups, leaving Newco the only team with enough of a squad to fill the gap at the top of the table.

History will show that Celtic followed COVID test, trace and isolation rules. Others were less observant. Gerrard won by default and would have been sacked were it not for the pandemic intervention.

He would be a short-term sugar rush to take the pressure off decision makers who cannot handle the heat off the Glasgow kitchen. Go for it.

You and INDIE have brightened my day this morning…Its so great to know how INDIE is getting on these days.

Ive been stuck in the Hoose for many weeks just now, due to some health issues…including a very painful BACK Problem, which comes and goes.

  2. Moisey17 – excellent post. A few on here are prone to suggesting the Club’s options are one extreme or the other. Replacing board members with people with appropriate experience and vision does not mean selling out to a faceless financial entity.

PL was a man of his time but his time has past. As it has for the rest of the members of the faceless board. The idea that there are not younger, more dynamic and better qualified people out there to lead our club through the next 5-10 years is ridiculous.

    Big Jimmy

Get yourself down to the back cracker and get the problem sorted.

Highly recommend Alan Ryan at West End Chiropractic.

  4. Can’t pretend to be happy about this guy coming back at rangers.

He has points to prove and knows the way it works here. He dislikes Rodger’s and showed in the last game that he has his number.

He is a horrible character and a fit for them. Our guy shat the bed last time and fkd off to Leicester earlier than intended.

They will get a bounce and qualify for Europa (easy draw will help that) and I doubt we will.

They have a semi final coming up where he can prove his cup record wrong against a really poorly performing Celtic team, if we are honest.

Momentum is huge in football and their fixtures until December are easier than Hearts or ours.

He may not be a fit for them and their strategy long term and he may be another Rodger’s type appt for us but I do think it is game on.

The thought of them winning 56 before us is real and makes me sick. Despite our significantly more valuable squad we have our own issues to sort.

Maybe all the rebels will have something to moan about. ESP those who have hardly ever seen them wins league title in front of their fans.

The flip side is it could be a financial disaster for them.

Lawwell gave the sign off for the Dubai trip. He sanctioned it after NL requested it.

    It was 100% on Lawwell.

  6. CHAIRBHOY on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 5:31 AM

Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone and sharing your knowledge and understanding of Celtic during COVID. Particularly the revelation that Neil Lennon, our football manager was in charge of the response for the organization. You should write a book, theres obviously a story to tell.

If only we had your expertise in how to manage the biggest global health crisis in centuries the country might not be facing the economic problems it is at the moment.

All we needed to do was adapt Celtic Park, Lennoxtown and Barrowfield 🤷‍♀️

  7. AN DÚN on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 9:53 AM

But NL was responsible for the clubs COVID response?

“Or maybe it was BR’s fault ? 😂”

I think “clearly a mistake” and a profound apology covers it

  8. B78 – Gerard was not mr popular in Govan by the time he left for Villa. His team were paying turgid football and he regularly threw players under the bus in his post match interviews.

He was considered a flop at Villa (in 38 Premier League games, the equivalent of an entire season, Gerrard’s Villa won only 12 games and lost 18).

He left his Saudi gig with his team in 12th place (despite them having the 4th highest budget in the league).

Remember also his time at Ibrox was before VAR and Tavernier was averaging 18-20 goals a season. Those days are gone (I think).

  9. CELTIC40ME on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 10:20 AM

His resignation as CEO covered it, that was entirely warranted.

  10. AN DÚN on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 10:35 AM

He resigned because of Dubai? Not how I remember it.

  11. CELTIC40ME on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 10:43 AM

So you’re one of the people that believe politicians when they say they’re stepping down for family reasons ?

  12. AN DÚN on 9TH OCTOBER 2025 10:52 AM

I tend to believe people I trust to tell the truth.

“I first discussed the possibility of my retirement with the chairman last year and we were keen to ensure an orderly handover to a new CEO once we had found the right candidate.

“Now that the process to select Dominic McKay as my successor is complete, I feel the time is now right to announce my retirement at the end of this season.”

  13. Celtic40me

Well, you’re in esteemed company, yourself and Michael Nicholson both believe everything Peter Lawwell says and denies…

  14. ” Burnley78 on 9th October 2025 9:10 am

Which guy? Have they got someone already?

Any evidence to support that claim?

Que sera, sera … over at the blue bogeyman

What we do as a club that matters, as it should always be.

If Gerrard? He’ll bring intensity to them for sure but two comparative factors would go against him this time around.

    1. Before he was a superstar player hungry for success.

Now he’s just a failed manager without options having to resort to the Average White Band routine.

Players are human and humans see and feel this stuff.

    2. VAR

  17. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Moravcik – not my chat but if I may ? …..

Doesn’t matter if he believes it.

The dummies who have perfected the half time boo and full time boo are desperate enough to believe it.

    PS – No, I don’t 😉

  18. If Brendan Rodgers is leaving at the end of the season, i would guess that Celtic are looking at potential coaches for next season, Sean Dyce i would imagine is

  19. the long wait is over on

Gerrard coming back to them , if he does, doesn’t bother me in the slightest, dead cat bounce apart.

    One trophy in 9?

One league during Covid with empty stadia and us observing Covid rules when they didn’t?

The pressure of 10 in a row crushing NL (IMHO), which handed them that one title?

Nothing to fear in any of that.

  20. the long wait is over on

    …. 2. VAR”

    VAR is a great point.

It’s far from flawless but I’d dread going back to the lawless days of football in Scotland without it.

  21. Timbhoy,

Sean Dyce ??Are you on this. Planet?.

Dont be writing off Gerrard.Burnley certainly has’nt.Think he would love to see him better Brendan. He can brag in the Hun hospitality,he said it could happen.

  22. Make you I’ll listening to the Media callling this,” The end of the Gaza war”.,heaping praise on Trump. No such thing as a”War”.It was mass murder of a civilian population.Mass murder that the Asshole in America could have stopped,40,000,dead,women and children, ago.Starmer could not wait to kiss his tangerine ass.

All this posturing and welcoming a war criminal,Netanyahu, twice to America, all a facade, while innocents starved,to further this madmans quest to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Watch the ass kissing that starts now.
