On being linked to players

118

There is nothing easier for an agent than to promote his player by ‘leaking’ that a club is interested in his client.  Agent contacts scout noting the player’s situation and scout acknowledges information.  This is often just a thumbs up sign, but that’s enough for the agent to confirm the club are considering his player.

Scouts are incentivised to be polite to agents and vice-versa.  Clubs get annoyed at distractive headlines suggesting they are pursuing a player whom they are not, but are not sufficiently troubled to upset an agent trying to get his player a deal.

Of course Odsonne Edouard’s agent contacted Celtic about the player’s availability, of course Celtic were polite when approached.  Is Odsonne on our target list?  Only if he is super-cheap.  Even then…..

    This enterprise you’ve created? …..

…That gives you purpose, drive, focus, some level of control, and (whisper it) hard cash?

    That’ll come to an end.

… but dont worry about losing your earnings while we hold onto ours.

Preserving what WE perceive to be YOUR dignity is far more important.

ONIL – if our board are chasing parity with Sevco they’re doing an absolutely terrible job.

    Keep it up, lads.

    🤣

  3. their new signing looks the part – has acceleration, speed , good first touch and can be developed. Rodgers wouldn’t like him because he likes to take a man on , break through the lines and create openings – Rodgers prefers we pass our way through the pitch and to the by line!

Window so far has been filthy! and Rodgers talking only of forward areas is very concerning! time will tell! In the meantime, Celtic are not wasting time in ramming multiple strips down our throats!

  5. I see some blogs are saying the Lennon Miller dream is over. The main reason is that Brendan does not rate him and Celtic have never offered a bid for him.

Simple is we were interested then we would have made a bid. His dad says his future is in the big 5 leagues. Well I can’t see Napoli. Making a bid and I suspect that he won’t get his wish. He will get a bid from Sunderland or Leicester.

    He is not good enough

Only time I’ve noticed Miller was the day at fir park when he hit the post and the couple of shots were all I remembered.

That said, I’ve only seen him in games v us.

Didn’t strike me as better than we already have.

  7. My huge concern right now, is our two best players, Hatate and Maeda will be sold in this transfer window, then the merde REALLY will hit the fan

    and then gets stumped

    that would be daft business.

  10. Word coming out now,,we have made no bid for the outstanding LB Navinho. When it comes to dithering we have no equals.Mind you,we will be working away feverishly to sign players.

City initially signed a £65m-a-year deal with the German kit manufacturer in 2019 but the parties have agreed an extension until at least 2035, worth a record £100m a year to the club.

I wonder if any of the concerns that some of the support have about getting new players in is reaching those that can do something about it, I personally just get a sense of BR will train and prepare who he has and signings are dealt with elsewhere, how long till we here he hasn’t done pre season and needs a few weeks to catch up?

  25. Yorkbhoy

that’s mental. they’d need to shift about 1m incremental pairs of boots to break even. Can’t see the business case unless it gets ‘puma’ in people’s heads as a go to brand for other sports

  26. Coneybhoy

I agree I can’t see the financial reason for that kind of contract. A lot of advertising bot a billions worth?

And by the way, whatever happened to Vasilis Barkas?

  30. I know it is not easy to buy the needed quality but surely there is enough money in the bank to spend on the actual fabric of Celtic Park. I have called for years for there to be hot water in the toilets. I’m surprised the ground passes health and safety for that reason alone. Much better wi fi would definitely not go amiss. I haven’t been in the Main Stand in many a year but by all accounts, much needs attending to there. Have any major improvements been made over the close season?

there were several comments raised around Celtic paying corporation tax, and it meaning, for some reason, a bad thing, according to the Celtic blog, why is money in the bank a waste of cash, it is just the same as having none (reminds me of an employee I had who told me he wouldnt work overtime, at double time an awe, because it meant he paid more taxes, he couldnt see the value of actually earning more money regardless).

Anyways, not being a board shrill, but just for Business understanding, again from the annual report –

    ———————

TAXATION PROVISION The corporation tax charge for the year ended 30 June 2024 is £4.4m (2023: £7.4m). An available capital allowance pool of £8.5m (2023: £4.3m) will be carried forward for use in future years.

Having pondered again about the cash versus capex investments and comments about the academy output. I queried if there was any proof that the £12m spent on Barrowfield has an overall strategic imperative “to produce champions league” players.

But quelle suprise when I re-read the annual report of 2024, and it is there in the CEO statement.

I suppose with the home growns squad rules, they could argue even, Walsh, Ralston filled fulfilled that promise, they became champions league players, not the very best, but there.

As to Barrowfield and £12m spend, much of our Corporation Taxes paid, can be reclaimed and used as offsets against Capital Expenditure investments. So all this gnashing of teefs about giving Hector monies, well so what, it is what an onshore profitable entity should do.

We can get it all back if there is a year we actually make a loss.

Whilst it is important to reflect on our success, we must look forward. There is no room for complacency. We cannot stand still and we are determined to improve. In support of our strategic objectives of dominating domestic football and competing in the Champions League, we have continued to invest across the Club.

Just as it is important to continue to recruit players, so it is crucial to develop them through our academy. With that objective in mind, in December 2023, we commenced the creation of a new facility at our historic training location at Barrowfield. This represents the most significant capital project the Club has undertaken since the re-development of Celtic Park, which was completed in 1998. The facilities at Barrowfield, including a full size indoor pitch, changing facilities, gym and technical departments, will be completed over the coming months and will deliver an outstanding new environment for our women’s team and boys and girls academy, with the strategic objective of creating Champions League players for our first teams.

but what is the value of having cash in the bank, well the interest earned was £4.7, and this while spnding £12m on infrastructure projects.

You can think of this as paying for all the academy, or all the energy bills, or making us highly rated in the credit rankings should we need some.

It does help daily operations that you can pay bills on time, and have most excellent cash flow.

No more invoices hidden at the back of a drawer.

    —————–

Interest income was £4.7m (2023: £2.0m) with the increase driven by bank interest earned on deposit accounts due to higher interest rates

and lastly – hurrah says the body of the kirk who dont want to know these things –

Those with the right type of shares have fixed dividens being paid, at I think 3.6p – if it was about making money, they could earn more interest or returns in ordinary banks –

Notes – the reinvestment scheme – ie putting your dividens back into the companys is now very very small, I suspect, small shareholders who have never taken a dividen, but the big owners now do because the company is so cash rich.

Finally finally, will we see another “exceptional profits” notice to the stock-exchange prior to the accounts being published ?

I would think so – simple things that raised revenues and profitabilty again –

29 home games, 2 european ties after half-year interims, player sales in January, new contract with adidas, strip releases, uefa payouts, and so on and so forth.

    Could revenues hit £140m ?

    —————–

DIVIDENDS Dividends of £0.5m were paid in cash on 30 August 2024 (2023: £0.5m) to those Preference Shareholders not participating in the scrip dividend reinvestment scheme. The record date for the purpose of the Preference Share dividend was 26 July 2024.
