On Griffiths

Leigh Griffiths problems are significant enough for him to be sent home from the club’s training camp.  While no charges have been made and none may be made, online speculation can jeopardise a successful prosecution.

Whatever you heard happened, this is not the place to repeat hearsay.  Notwithstanding that, it is likely the end of the road for Leigh.

“Are they all down to our level now?”

I think Zagreb, at least, are at our level and Malmo close to it so we must allow Midjtyland to be there too.

The pub leagie jibes are Hun-like arrogance as they all look to have sbered up enough to make life difficult.

Valur scoring 2 goals in Zagreb is impressive , even taking rustiness into account

Hello again all you young rebels.

    SFTB

Gone are the days when I expected the bhoys to beat any team on the

It’s all moneyball now, but being of the older persuasion I’ve seen the real

many other fine Bhoys/Ghirls on here I’m in it since birth.

So negative comments, political comments, or just basic hate comments

really, trying so hard to be important.

    It’s quite sad really.

  4. April 2020 – our head of sport science Jack Naylor gave us this insight.

Last week he left for RBLeipzig. Brought by Brendan from Real Madrid, he stayed at Celtic

Celtic’s Head of Sport Science discusses training in lockdown

    By Paul Cuddihy

    Share

CELTIC’S Head of Sports Science, Jack Nayler, revealed how he and the coaching staff are working to ensure the players maintain their high levels of fitness during the current lockdown.

“The situation changed quite quickly so we had to move fast to get ourselves sorted,” Jack Nayler told the Celtic View podcast. “John Currie is the head of fitness and conditioning and he pulled together all the programmes for the guys and tailored them brilliantly to each individual player.

“He’s put in a lot of work over the last couple of weeks to pull that together and has done an incredible job. From my side, I’ve set up monitoring to record what they’re doing and we’ve also provided the guys with nutrition packs so they’ve all got some protein powder and stuff to help boost immunity.

“Rob Norton, our nutritionist, has been in touch with all of the players to help them with their food plans. For some of the guys who aren’t good at cooking, we’ve set them up with meal prep companies who can deliver pre-prepared healthy meals to their home.”

With everything in place, the players have been working hard in training and keeping the staff abreast of their progress. Jack Nayler said the coaching staff have even found ways to tap into the players’ competitive edge in order to maximise their training.

“All the guys have heart-rate belts and they wear them for any training they do indoors or outdoors,” he said. “We’re able to track all the distances they cover as well so we have a lot of data to look at from the players.

“They’re doing it in their own time when it suits them. I’m getting constant WhatsApp messages from them telling me what they’re doing throughout the day, so in some ways I’m a little bit busier than usual because I’m getting messages throughout the day and into the evening as opposed to just at the training ground.

“We’re trying to keep everyone motivated and interested is really important. We have things like a weekly 5k race which all the players record individually and post their data. These guys are competitive, particularly with each other, so any way we can build on that, get a bit of banter between them and have them push each other then we’ll look to exploit those opportunities when we can.”

  6. SFTB – The first round of CL qualifying fixtures this week were all in the “champions” path, we’re in the “non-champions” path. Eg. We’re not playing the Danish champions, that would be Brondby, we’re playing 2nd placed Midtjlland.

Any culling of seeded teams in the opening round of the champions path is probably beneficial to sevco, as it means more chance of facing a lower coef team in their “champions” path.

Our “non-champions” path provides little opportunity for top team culling unfortunately as the seeded teams are generally introduced at each respective round, however if we were _really_ lucky we could face Midtjlland -> Rapid Vienna -> Galatasary. No, me neither.

  7. Blast from the recent past — sports science stuff from April 2020.

If ever there was written proof that we as a club are / were a bunch of unconscious incompetents that is it.

    Our fitness levels were shambolic.

There was no focus and the players responded in kind.

Plus the High School Musical rip-off that is the youths.

Their survival rests on getting through.

    No stone unturned.

No trick left in the locker.

No phone call / stroke unmade.

    It will not be pretty.

    It will be effective.

  9. Sons Of Erin

It will be tough to get through that route but its better to have the challenge than not to be in the draw at all.

It may look like a FOx and Grapes outlook but I think it would suit Ange’s development and re-cuild task if we get entry into Europa League instead of having to face the big teams in CL at a time of re-building.

  10. Saint Stivs – thank you for posting the sports science stuff. As that was from April 2020, and only a month into the lockdown, it shows that some people took their jobs seriously. Unfortunately 1-2 players didn’t stick to it. As others have asked before, with all of the tracking, how did Griff manage to show up in June a stone overweight? And then take 6 months to shed the extra timber and be deemed fit enough to get the occasional appearance. You can lead a horse to water and all that.

Most of our players were not as fast or as fit as they should have been last season.

For me NL has to take the majority of the blame for it. He was never a real believer in the “24 hour athlete” mentality and a lot of the players took advantage of it. Too many days off, too many nights out.

Players arriving on loan looked fit, looked lean, looked fast. A month after joining they looked the same as the rest of the players.

If Ange gets the training and culture back towards the BR days we will see a major improvement in performances.

Decent performance indeed by Valur at Zagreb but it is the middle of their season and match fitness not a prob for them.

  12. Rolling_Stone on

Should we really be on the same level as Midjtyland? It was noted that they had a turnover of £22m (it could be Euro) when they qualified for the CL last year (I’m sure it will have gone up significantly this year on account of CL participation).

So why are we sitting around the same level as a team with a turnover roughly 1/4 of ours?

Maybe they are punching above their weight or we are punching below our weight, or maybe a hefty combination of both?

I would start by his own personal habits and move onto the weekend session just before the ICT game in May 2011.

  19. SFTB – I hear you. There’s actually also a reasonable argument for the Conference league. Revenues for achievements in each competitions are listed below.

    Reach the group stage : CL – 15m, EL – 3.6m, ECL – 3m

    Each win in grp stage : CL – 2.8m, EL – 630k, ECL – 500k

    Each draw in grp stage : CL – 930k, EL – 210k, ECL – 166k

    Win grp stage : CL – 9.6m, EL – 1.1m, ECL – 650k

The total prize pot for the EL is 435m across 32 participating teams, the ECL prize pot is 235m again across 32 teams. However the ECL prize money is front-loaded, there’s more money provided for the earlier rounds and therefore the prize money for the winners/runners up will be diminished. This, I assume, is to provide incentive for clubs from the bigger leagues to take the competition more seriously in the earlier rounds when a potential overall win is a distant prospect. The thinking being once these clubs get to the quarter finals they might as well finish the job and get a cup, so perhaps the financial incentive is less important.

This model may suit Celtic, as our achievements in such competitions are also generally front-loaded.

For example, imagine two teams, one enters the EL and the other the ECL. Both teams get 3 wins and two draws, and top their grps. The EL team receives 5.9m, and the ECL team received 4.8m. Bear in mind however that the ECL team will generally face poorer competition so has a greater chance of getting positive results.

  26. Melbourne Mick – happy to answer myself though Mad Mitch beat me to it. I am juggling reading and working so not so quick at times.

The evidence you ask for was right in front of all our eyes throughout the last couple of seasons.

Players were not at the same level they had been a few months previously, they were being outfought and outrun in game after game, they were getting beat to the second ball, they were succumbing to niggling injuries, they were been given days off just after the season started and they were playing at a pedestrian pace with no zip.

On the anecdotal side, we were told by numerous sources, including ex-players, Lennon was not much of a presence at training sessions, not much into tactics and not much of a believer in sports science.

He said in August, with the season underway, that Julien wasn’t up to pace as he was a slow starter. We were told Leigh was overweight. We were told the other forwards were not fit as the CLQ games came and went.

Not sure many fans, having witnessed last season, would say that the team were as fit as they should have been. That decline happened under NL’s watch.

For that reason I say the blame lies with him.

  32. What are our chances of getting past Midtjlland? Well there’s probably a few transfer dealings for either team before the games, and a whole bunch of intangibles at play, but working out our chances against three separate metrics –

    UEFA coefficient : Celtic = 34, Midtjlland = 13.5.

Celtic coefficient is 2.5x better, which translates as a 71.5% chance of winning the tie.

    Transfermarket squad value : Celtic = 71m, Midjtlland = 53.5m

Celtic’s squad value has been in freefall over the last couple of months dropping over 10m, probably due to the number of players hitting the last year of their contracts, note this doesn’t make them poorer players. Conversely Midtjlland’s has risen by 10m over the last month, they haven’t made noticeable signings so no idea why.

Celtic’s squad value is 1.3x greater, translates to a 57% win chance.

    Transfermarkt best starting 11 value : Celtic = 57.5m, Midjtlland = 36m

Above notes apply, and the Transfermarkt best 11 doesn’t consider possible injured.

Celtic’s best 11 value is 1.6x greater, which means 61.5% win chance.

None of these metrics are perfect, so you can pick yourself which you place most faith in. Without weighting them for reliability, the average across all three is 63.3% chance of Celtic progressing. Easy, right?

I might do this again closer to the tie in case anything has drastically changed, if I can be bothered.
