On signing from domestic rivals

816

There are limits to how far we can recruit from our domestic market and continue to prosper.  Martin O’Neill preferred to sign players his teams had faced, which meant Hibs and St Johnstone being plundered, eventually leading to decline.  Gordon Strachan enjoyed watching Hibs all his life; it showed in his Celtic signings.

Rumour has it when Jock Stein signed Willie Wallace from Hearts in 1966 his timing was determined by the need to deny a rival Wallace’ signature.  Neil Lennon should find it easy to compete with the likes of Derby County, if he is motivated to do so.

Enjoy the fantastic clips of Willie Wallace below from the 1960s.  You’ll have seen many before but the clip of him beating three Celtic defenders before scoring was new to me.  It might have been the goal which convinced Jock to move.

Did you watch Stokes in the cup final? Did pretty well playing on the left, set up 2 and started the move for the 3rd.

Agree re. Russell, a steal at £800k

  2. I worked with a young lad a couple of years ago who had come through the youth system at Dundee Utd with the likes of Goodwillie and Russell. He reckoned Russell was the real deal. I reckon he would flourish in a Celtic jersey.

  3. Superb video. And now realising where John Hewitt copied the wee celebratory jump from.

    Is that a promise.

Are you getting a bus into Glasgow on Saturday. If you bring a car you won’t be drinking much.

  5. mearns Hoops is a lot more then a box striker sure he is great to get on the end of stuff in the business end but he also has great control & touch and a good footballing brain plus great physical strength. We will only really miss him when he is gone. Russell is a decent player and could develop into a very good player but to compare him to Hoops at this stage is nuts.

niallo83. Fella I respect your opinion on Johnny Russell however,to say Stokes cant play out wide is incorrect he in my opinion won the Scottish cup for us playing out wide and had one of his best games for us.H.H.

  7. Nothing to do with anything being discussed but it made me smile

The schools here were off at the beginning of the week so the two youngest were shipped up to their Granny’s on Tuesday Granny.takes them for a walk into town and they were sitting in the sun watching the world go by. My daughter asks her granny “are Celtic playing tonight?” granny doesn’t know but asks why Mairead thinks they may be “well there are lots of people wearing Celtic tops,it looks like Dad’s club except outside” .Oh said granny .Realising she wasn’t going to get a sensible answer from her granny Mairead then approaches two passing policemen

“Excuse me officer , can you tell me if there is a Celtic game today”

Now the mother -In- law told me this so I believe it

One of the police men looked around him with a barely disguised look of disgust

“naw hen ,its just Port Glasgow it’s always like this” and walked off

    made me laugh :-)

At last a proper scientific study into an area that has been the source of much debate on CQN!

I believe ole Wilf Chumbly was almost signed by Mr Maley as a stop-gap in defence. He could have made a fine centre half – although the position he would have played at that time was known as “front bottom”.

I believe he may still lurk on CQN and contribute regularly to the toasted/roasted debate.

I would love to see JR and Hoops in the ahem Hoops. All I am saying is make the bid Celitc, pay £800k. I agree fully on gary’s touch and even range of passing. Looking ahead I feel JR has great promise.

  11. Apricale, I did read some stuff along the lines you are saying and if by any mischance the PSA ‘s come back high I would take advice before deciding on treatment. I had a mate last year whose PSA’s were marginaly high but there was a history of this disease in the family and the Doc reccomended a Bi-Opsy which proved positive. He had operation & radiotherapy and he is fine but specialist told him if he hadn’t acted when he did he could have got away with it for about 2 years but after that period any treatment would not have saved him.

  12. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Apricale -all I would add is that if you have a first degree relative with prostate cancer [father, brother] then PSA screening may be beneficial.

    As you say, it’s complex.

Mr Johnny Clash -maks sense tae me, and it maks sense tae Mo.

  13. CorkCelt: how right you are about Hooper. An excellent striker who is not nearly appreciated enough.

Thanks to everybody else for giving their Russell thoughts. He is a prospect but I still don’t understand such desire to sign him. James McCarthy did not want to sign for Celtic as the wages were much higher at Wigan. I still wish him well but he could have signed for us had he wanted. Nobody predicted Steven Fletcher would be worth more than £10 million but that valuation says more about the ludicrous EPL than about Fletcher’s ability.

We have some very good players who should be appreciated more. I really hope Ambrose shuts the moaners up next season.

  14. As was mentioned yesterday …Lenny has a fairly poor record when signing forwards

Lets hope this window is different ..whether it be Russell or not …personally I think he is worth gamble ….

  15. McDowellCelt on

We know we have the players and squad who will win the league in scotland nxt year. Surely its players to improve first team and ensure champions league qualification we should be lookin at?

Will the signing of johnny russell enhance our first team for champs league qualifiers? NO

Is he any better than Tony Watt? His record suggests he is but tony has never been given a run of games. If he was i would have no doubts he would score plenty of goals once he improves his game.

Why is Derby County the only club interested in signing russell?

In my opinion this will be another Derek Riordan type signing who will struggle to start for us and eventually leave…

Time to give tony watt his chance.

The Hooper of the final is a great player

The Hooper who played in feb/ march was awful ….

In any event if he isn’t going to sign a new contract then he must be sold

I was taken by my weans (honest) to a book signing in Liverpool by children’s (lassies’) author Cathy Cassidy. She is from England but has made D+G her home because it fulfils her dreams of a Hippies-For-Change-Flower-Power-Fairy-Glen paradise more than anywhere else she’s ever been, even if it means having to drive to Ayrshire for the odd touch of sophistication such as lavatory paper and dance lessons for her wee one.

This is a paraphrase of the brief conversation, but an accurate one.

  18. I agree with McDowellCelt.

Tony Watt and Anthony Stokes are better options.

    Re: debate on A Stokes

Very interesting to see his advocates all banging on about the magnificent game he had in the SCF – while acknowledging it was his best game in a Celtic jersey.

He did have a very good game in the SCF.

Now be honest. How many people seriously think he is capable of this level of performance on a regular basis?

In terms of what he likely believes he is worth, I would say we could do a lot better for cheaper and I would willingly tell him to whistle for an improved contract – irrespective of whether hooper stays or goes.

I think when looking at other spl players/possible signings you have too factor in MIB in other teams they get more protection? you only need look back to Vics straight red against St Mirren too see how it can work against us, but work for other teams, we have to be at our best all the time were as they can win or sometimes draw on even one poor decision, then God help NFL if he dares to offer an opinion?

    HH

  21. ….PFayr, I also agree with you that Hooper should be sold because of his contract situation but replacing him with Russell is not an option.

  23. Kayal and Joe Filippi’s haircut,

Stokes was brilliant in the cup final and set up 2 goals from out wide…..point taken!!

I guess my thoughts on it are this. Most of the teams in the SPL are pretty poor. Celtic are looking to make strides in Europe. Any player to play out wide in the Champions League has to have pace. Making an impact against the Hibs defence is slightly different than Barca’s/Milan’s etc.

The problem we have is trying to figure out who can perform against the European big boys but also in the SPL. In Lennon’s time in charge Stokes has rarely started European or Old Firm games. Kris Boyd was the same for Rangers!! Scored for fun in the SPL…..couldn’t score against Celtic/ European teams.

I may be wrong about Stokes but there are a few indicators to suggest he isn’t as good as some people on here think he is…..he failed at Sunderland, he didn’t make any impression at a few Championship clubs he was on loan at, he isn’t usually picked for Celtic in European/ Old Firm games and before his row with Trapatoni Ireland weren’t too bothered about giving him a run.

I think Stokes is a good SPL level striker. However, if we want to make inroads in Europe, in my opinion, he’s not the answer!!!

  24. PFayr, Its not just Lenny. Good Strikers are a rare commodity, backs & midfielders are 10 a penny. Unless you are prepared to pay big bucks for a proven striker you are taking a big risk. Hence my desire to hold on to Hoops.

Mhan, if I was paid by the word, I’d be buying Johnny Russell for the Hoops out of my own loose change.

  26. Would like to see us sign Russell – think he has skill and potential, he is a Scot (UEFA reasons) and appears to tick the ‘fan’ box.

We had a good record in the past when signing forwards (strikers) from Scottish Clubs – ghuys that contributed and got what being part of a Celtic Team was; McBride, Wallace, Dixie, McClair (+ a few others that get pelters for their post-Celtic careers).

Celtic should (where possible) look to buy occasionally from within the home market – if only for the fact that it puts some of our money back into the game in Scotland and gives some of the young talent at provincial clubs something to aspire to – do well and sign for the Glasgow Celtic rather than disappear to the hinterlands of the Championship and League 1.

I like what I’ve seen of him and will be happy if we get him. If not – I wont lose any sleep over it – but I do hope the lad goes on to have a successful career.

    Johnny Russell .

Quick look at Derby County cyberspace suggests that some Derby people think that Derby are competing with Huddersfield and Bolton to sign Johnny Russell.

  30. squire & niall, Stokes was out most of year with injury, he has done really well since he came back. There is no doubt that he has made mistakes in his life and his football has suffered. He seems to have grown up a lot, I reckon from now on we will see a different and a better Anthony Stokes.

Oops! Of course Numero Group is the label. Have you ever heard the Bandit label compilation? If not then I implore you to find a most majestic song called ‘I’ll never cry for another boy’ by The Majestic Arrow.
