One day in Fife

519

Over 70 CQN’ers gathered in Aberdour, Fife, on Friday for our eighth annual charity golf day.  As before, the day was hugely successful.  Both those there on the day, and hundreds more who contributed beforehand, raised over £6,000 since we kicked off the summer’s fundraising activity in May.

This year LIvingston manager and former Celtic player, John Hughes, gave his time to entertain us with a mixture of great anecdotes and outrageous anecdotes.  The big man spoke warmly of his time at Celtic, the joy of signing and working for Tommy Burns, that goal at Ibrox, and how he still benefits from his time learning from Tommy.

Many sincere thanks to Taggsy, BlantyreKev, Jonnybhoy, Barassiebhoy for organising an excellent event yet again.  A special mention for Oldtim, for more than I am prepared to tell you, and to everyone who contributed to an excellent Celtic occasion.

I spent a few days in Germany last week and I ended up having a good few drinks with a 65 year old Burnley fan in a Cologne Irish bar. He told me something interesting about the infamous Anglo-Scottish cup tie between Burnley and Celtic at Turf Moor in 78.

In the mid seventies, hundreds of Scots moved to Burnley for work, mostly in Aerospace. Anyway the ex pats soon formed there own Celtic and Rangers clubs which were based in their respective pubs. A week before the game, this guy, named Barry, was in the hun pub, think he said it was called the Caledonian. He heard them planning to start trouble at the game when the Celtic support got there. Barry went round to the Celtic pub and warned them but as these guys all worked together they didnt see it as a problem.

The game kicked off and Union Jacks and UDA banners appeared in the home end. There were up to 5000 away fans crammed into a paddock adjacent to the ‘Burnley’ support. The taunting went on from the home end but it was the usual hun bile and not Burnley songs that could be heard. The Celtic support came back with IRA chants, but the response they got was bottles and other missiles from the home end. The riot kicked off and everything went to plan for the hun infiltrators.

I remember the DR slaughtering the away support for that riot. In those days the newspaper was nowhere near as biased toward the huns as it is today, but they still had a field day. This was their chance to drag us into the hun problem which had recently disgraced the nation with riots in Barcelona Manchester and Birmingham, and they took it. The Battle of Turf Moor they called it.

I wasnt at the game but would be interested to hear from anybody who was there that night.

Hello bhoys and ghirls, just a post to say that so far we have raised £3,000.80 in badge sales and donations for Oscar, as there are still badge costs to come in this figure will rise even more. – http://www.justgiving.com/CQNbadges

Myself and CRC would like to thank you all for the generosity you have all shown during this.

During this raising of funds etc it has been very humbling and I feel honoured to have assisted in this for such a great cause.

Once again thank you all for this

I was at the Burnley game, there was indeed union jacks flying in the Burnley end but i never heard any uda songs.

The Celtic support arrived mainly from a “special” train and most if not all fans were blootered.

Not a nice atmosphere at all, and there was a few alchohol related skuffels between our own support.

(i was living in the rainy city then) so was just a short car ride to Burnley, loads of shop windows were smashed on the night.

Not a pleasant atmosphere at all if memory serves.

I was hoping to be the “big fan” directed at the flag. I can think of a few others similarly proportioned.

Hope you had a great holiday!

We were in Alanya last year and had a great time.

Re the weather when you get home on Wednesday –

Blue skies all day with highs of 45 degrees.

    Fahrenheit, that is!

    Safe journey home!

  8. I should also add it took more time for the Sellik fans to get their carry-out’s into the ground than it did fans (case upon case of “screw-taps”) -))))

  9. Could a kind tim please tell me what Keevin’s did/said to be ‘unwelcome’?

I’m not particularly interested in his nasal whinings, more interested in what he said that could be worse than Traynor and the rest of the MSM Bampots have come away with during refereegate, dallasgate, thugsandtheivesgate, lennonhrmcibroxgate, mcleannevincupfinalgate etc etc ….

I recall that occasion rather sketchily. I think that the DR front page the next day had a picture of rioting fans on a football pitch but, the picture wasn’t from the Burnley v Celtic game !?!?!

I also recall our game prior to going down to Turf Moor. It was three days earlier in the first O## F### game between Billy McNeill and John Greig as managers.

We won the game 3-1 but, I recall the huns on several occasions, trying to invade the pitch. They were full of their unique brand of toxic-poison that day.

I’m sure when we played Burnley at CP, we were well beaten. 3-1 I think ?

I remember Leighton James scoring and running the length of the old Jungle to celebrate. Bhoo! Hiss! :o)))

  12. I was reluctant to add to the memory of the Burnley game as i thought the Celtic fans were as much to blame as the Burnley fans.

I took a guy who owned Trafford Timber at the time, and i had plugged our team for over a week as the best support in the world.

I will never forget the look he gave me as we walked back to the car, sad but true.

What Keevins did do was – show us all how BIG our board really are!!! imo.

I think he infered that – the Internet Bampots had a gun at the head of the bored to vote the huns out of the SPL ?

Imo, if the IB’s hadn’t applied the pressure to get rid of the huns out the league then, the bored would have insisted that the huns remain in the SPL !!!

Only seen the last 20 mins of the game game on Saturday (on Celtic TV), but I would be surprsed if BBC Scotland’s stats are correct:

    42% possession Tic / 58% possession Dons.

We seem to be getting a lot of negative press at the moment, there are more than a few who are just itching to see a slip-up in Finland.

We’ll just have to disappoint them again.

Lennon n McMjallby- no shortage of stag dos. Didn’t go to the Oak but went to the Thai restaurant near the station on Friday and a good Algerian restaurant near the Uni on Saturday.

Watched the Olympics on the big screen at the Millenium Square.

Was at the game and those stats are as reliable as Sevco season ticket sales

  17. Have to oint out though, having possession and doing anything with it are two totally different things and we didn’t cover ourselves in glory on that front !

So the guy who termed us Internet Bampots then uses our work to take a sly dig a Celtic and you pick up the stick he dropped to push your anti board agenda…

re-posted this cos it really is mind-boggling. it is the greatest technological achievement by mankind….ever. imagine Gary Hooper kicks a ball from a park in New York and eventually it lands in the net at Celtic Park. that is kinda like what nasa has done. forget politics : this is some achievement.
