One day in Fife

519

Over 70 CQN’ers gathered in Aberdour, Fife, on Friday for our eighth annual charity golf day.  As before, the day was hugely successful.  Both those there on the day, and hundreds more who contributed beforehand, raised over £6,000 since we kicked off the summer’s fundraising activity in May.

This year LIvingston manager and former Celtic player, John Hughes, gave his time to entertain us with a mixture of great anecdotes and outrageous anecdotes.  The big man spoke warmly of his time at Celtic, the joy of signing and working for Tommy Burns, that goal at Ibrox, and how he still benefits from his time learning from Tommy.

Many sincere thanks to Taggsy, BlantyreKev, Jonnybhoy, Barassiebhoy for organising an excellent event yet again.  A special mention for Oldtim, for more than I am prepared to tell you, and to everyone who contributed to an excellent Celtic occasion.

Much to agree with in that analysis. Is that for each season? In other words, should we be expected to beat our first round CL opponents every year without signing anyone? What happens if who we draw is richer than us?

I agree up to a point. If we only get one in, a striker for me is the priority. needs to be someone of proven quality …maybe lost their way and need a fresh challenge…no point in saing we have a whole bunch bought in Lenny’s time. The fact is they were gambles that have not paid off. Time to rectify those errors before it’s too late and window closes!

The first game always down crowd numbers due to hols and other family commitments during summer months …but take your point re interest levels on cold evenings if we are playing the way we did yesterday. My expectation is that we will get sharper and the style and quality will improve..also the european interest will keep us going.

Right now I am wondering who will present the main challenge to us this season. It could be Dons as the came within a daft goalkeeping error of taking a valuable away point.

There is enough happening to keep me interested

On another point- why were dons wearing whirte shorts yesterday..normally all red?

    Excellent summary of our position.

Based on that premise surely we have to be better prepared at the start of each season to give us a chance for Champions league participation?

Based on NL’s tenure to date it seems we only have expectations of Europa.

We have been poorly prepared in last three seasons.

This is an area needing addressed.

  6. Why did we let Loovens, Dan and O’Dea leave if we weren’t going to sign at least one replacement?

    Seems strange to me.

saltires en sevilla. We still have Mo Bangura who may yet score goals for us and young Tony Watt deserves his chance we need to bring some of our talented youngsters into the first team. The way forward is to bring on our own youngsters and also top quality young foreign youngsters. As Barcabhoy says then sell on after a few seasons for top dollar that way we can improve our European hopes spending big money is not the way forward we do not have the financial resources.H.H.

    Not much to argue against.

Thing is, many of us are not advocating buying players, some of us are asking for replacements in on bosmans, or even loans to replace the ones who have left.

A CH is all I have asked for, one player to replace the 10 or so who are now no longer drawing a wage, and there are many out there who are for free and would do a decent job for us.

Not too much to ask for, though many seem to think it’s a dream too far.

Just like our complaint about black socks, there is enough in the history to justify it.

    From wiki:-

“n March 1939, Aberdeen changed the black and gold colours to red and white, reflecting the silver and red colours of the official City of Aberdeen arms. The first red strips were worn with white shorts, with either red or white socks from 1939 until the 1965/66 season In 1966, Aberdeen adopted red shorts, making the official kit all-red, similar to that of Liverpool, who made a similar change at around the same time.”

Was Fujot (sp) crocked before we released the players you mentioned?

Me, I’d sign Puyol and messi and be done wi’ it!

    So I would.

Black socks, white socks, green socks.

It’s what’s inside the socks that matters.

  13. hamiltontim

I’m near apoplexy here. Our signings will absolutely depend on whether or not we’re in the CL. In the CL our first pick may honour us with his presence but not in the CL we’ll need to move to our second or third choice at best.

And as for Darren O’Dea surely he was good enough to earn a place in at least a Championship side. Fail to see him being paid more in Toronto.

Ah mean, red wine, white wine, rose wine.

Great post – but it throws up the quandry – failure to qualify means probable failure to improve what we have at present.

That’s a difficult line to maintain.

Then – when you factor in luck? A few of our recent campaigns have been over within 90 seconds – there no amount of tactics and preparation can predict lady luck’s input…

Not so sure Bangura will produce anything like what we need -there is not much evidence so far. If Tony Watt was in Lenny’s notebook as a current option I think we would have featured b now.

Don’t get me wrong I am not advocating spending heaps of cash …not at all…but we need a striker who would relish a fresh challenge. You said we needed a striker in your own post, unless I misread, I expect that was intended to mean a target man?

    There is an obvious gap.

Interesting question about Fujot though, don’t know if we new of his injury first.

If we play in the Champions route qualifying for the CL, then I would think it virtually impossible that we face a club with a bigger budget than ours. That route , by definition, is for countries who’s champions do no get automatic qualification. This means we can’t face the most successful countries . We should and almost always will be the biggest club , by some way , in this qualifying route

I believe we will sell a highly rated player every year, or every second year at most. Victor did not leave Belgium to play for 10 years in the SPL. He signed for us, I suspect for 3 good reasons.

    1. We as a club offer a special experience, and significantly higher wages than he was able to get in Belgium

    2. We offer a potential for CL football

    3. We offer the visibility and the platform for him to become an £80,000 per week player in a Lge with more money than class

He and Ki and Beram are all Pro’s. They have an obligation to maximize their earning potential. We give them that at this stage of their career, it’s unlikely we could do that for the next stage , so it’s reasonable they move and we get compensated for our development work and our foresight in signing them in the first place.

The only way we could keep players like them is if we are in the CL every year. However as I mentioned earlier, we need to sell them to encourage the next generation to sign. Henrik left us and won the CL and La Liga. That doesn’t hurt in our sales pitch to new recruits

Yup the world has changed and with it perceptions.

It helps that we seem to be developing our own after scouting out the raw talent and the odd loss of points, when giving that talent a chance, will not be viewed as disasterous as it was when Rangers were in the frame (even if on unfair grounds).

The future is green and white.

A fresh challenge in the SPL ahead of knowing our CL aspirations? The player would be mad to accept such a situation.

If PL had just paid the agent a few bob extra when we tried to sign Ramis, we probably wouldn’t be having the conversation about a CH.

It might even worked out for us in the long run as well, agents who are looked after in turn look after those who look after them :>)

A great summation of our current financial position and how it relates to our squad.

It is absolutely imperative that we make at least the group stages of the CL this year. Personally, I can take getting draws even the odd loss in the SPL in the first few games if it meant that we got to the CL. This as you said Barcabhoy will be the springboard for making European progress for the next few seasons.

Ultimately though…the SPL must be ours this year.

I’m not saying that we should be spending millions prior to CL or EL qualification, I’m generally very supportive of our club’s prudence.

It just seemed very strange that we let 3 centre halfs leave the club IF there is no intention of replacing them.

My concern is that failure to qualify for the CL group stages this season, coupled with the obvious belt tightening that is going on at CP, will mean we will fall further behind the Helsinki’s et al next season and beyond.

This season will be a watershed for the club and a lot of supporters whose ambitions may amount to more than another huge personal bonus.
