One day in Fife

519

Over 70 CQN’ers gathered in Aberdour, Fife, on Friday for our eighth annual charity golf day.  As before, the day was hugely successful.  Both those there on the day, and hundreds more who contributed beforehand, raised over £6,000 since we kicked off the summer’s fundraising activity in May.

This year LIvingston manager and former Celtic player, John Hughes, gave his time to entertain us with a mixture of great anecdotes and outrageous anecdotes.  The big man spoke warmly of his time at Celtic, the joy of signing and working for Tommy Burns, that goal at Ibrox, and how he still benefits from his time learning from Tommy.

Many sincere thanks to Taggsy, BlantyreKev, Jonnybhoy, Barassiebhoy for organising an excellent event yet again.  A special mention for Oldtim, for more than I am prepared to tell you, and to everyone who contributed to an excellent Celtic occasion.

Maybe -but when Chris Sutton signed for us in 2000 there was no CL football – he had Helsinki and Bordeaux in the Eufa Cup to look forward to …was he mad? ..he did have something to prove. Not suggesting we pay 6m but there must be a striker somewhere willing to give it a go…I am told Lenny can be win over doubters over a glass or two of of porter ;-)

I want the squad strengthened as much as anyone but would signing a player or two guarantee CL?

No and then you are left with a player who may or may not come good over a season.

We’ve seen that a lot – Juarez, Rasmussen and even Bangura did very little but all three were heralded to a degree when they were signed and all they really did was take money for nothing or next to nothing.

Kelvin Wilson has not had the desired form or ability and cutting our losses and even getting a few quid for a guy we got on a bosman looks like smart business. We have been very unfortunate with Fojut getting injured or he would have been in the side without a doubt but again we are faced with the old chesnut that we have a defense acquired for under 2M pounds and some of those players have let us down routinely in European football.

    Mathews – small development fee

    Rogne 200K

    Charlie – Free

    Izzy 600

    Lustig – Free

    K.Wilson – Free

Now if it works, it is great – Charlie has been real value as Neil’s first signing because he grasped his chance. Mathews looks great and Izzy can be great again.

Rogne is a proper centre half in the old sense but not too quick and the jury remains out on Lustig and Wilson.

Money does not guarantee success in Europe. IMagine we’d signed a 3M quid player and then he got injured or he was as poor as Bangura has looked – we are stuck with him and in some ways we are still paying for the Mowbray January transfer window when a fortune was relatively spent on a lot of duds and duds who we couldn’t and can’t shift to this day or until only very recently.

Rasmussen, Kamara, Hooiveld, Rogne, Keane, Braafheid, Ki were all purchased or loaned into us while we sold McDonald (our best goalscorer at the time) and we had to pay all these players in wages at least. Only Rogne and Ki have remained and one of them will now be sold to QPR if reports are accurate regardless of CL football or not.

Neil himself has signed some guys who have not worked out – Juarez, Murphy and Bangura spring to mind instantly as guys who have done next to nothing while picking up wages for at least one year between them. However Neil has had better judgement and has had more successes than failures.

The damage of the Mowbray experiment (despite the fact we were being cheated over and over again by refereeing honest mistakes and an EBT debt ridden doped up team) was a disaster because good players from the Strachan era who knew how to win titles and cups were replaced by half-hearted players, poor players and nefarious players who cost the club a lot of money with no return.

Mowbray got rid of JVOH and Paul Hartley and replaced them with Fortune and NGuemo – madness.

He dumped Barry Robson and Scott McDonald – two guys who knew how to beat Rangers and got in Robbie Keane who played well but the whole team had to change to accommodate him and we still lost stupid goal after stupid goal because of clowns like Braafheid at Aberdeen in particular and that’s before we get to that night in Paisley.

I can understand the board being careful with cash but if Celtic fail on Wednesday, there are going to be a lot of questions and the answer must not be we cannot compete with the EPL. We are playing a Finnish side who have less resources than us supposedly.

    We wait and see.

Hopefully we get through and we manage to secure some form of European football until Christmas. CL might be beyond us, but Europa league must not be.

This knife-edge has be swaying all over the place.

It’s not all doom and gloom amigo. Took my 18 year old younger daughter along to yesterday’s game and she had a great day. She’d never been interested before but now is keen to get along to CP on a regular basis. Helps that we have a lounge environment so can have a drink and food and meet up with guys I’ve been meeting for many years now..

On a negative point her seat cost me £35 and that was at a concession price. On Wednesday for the Helsinki game I arrived straight from work and it cost £9.95 for fish and chips in our lounge. They are desperate for money and taking the p..s. wherever possible.

I also reckon Thommo hasn’t been replaced on monetary grounds.

The day we won the league, we knew what was in front of us re the CL qualifiers.

This season especially, knowing that the huns were in serious doo, doo, we should have had the players back a month early, there will be plenty of oportunities to rest them mid season.

  14. I think Ramis turned down the mighty West Ham to sign for the even mightier Wigan Athletic, sounds like the type of guy we should’ve pushed the boat out for :O)

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Surely we have to accept that Neil Lennon a young manger must improve year on year as he gains more experience? Now if we dont show any improvement in Europe we would over a few seasons have to look at Neils managerial performance. I love the guy but it doesnt blind me to the fact he must take us forward in Europe he has the managerial job at Scotlands largest club and a club who I like to think of in tems of size as being in the top 10 of European clubs. There are expectations which must be matched.H.H.

  16. Barca, excellent post. It is easy for bloggers to shout about spending money. It is a different thing to have to get it right in an unforgiving environment.

I sit on the most cautious side of the Celtic supporting spectrum myself. Sometimes all by myself….:) Or so it seems…..

That being said, if EVER there was the time to take a punt, I’d say it is now. Two reasons…..

First, no sevco for 3 years or so. Three years of CL money puts us 45 million pounds ahead by the time to resurface. Wasting these 3 years would be just like sitting in a lay by waiting for them to catch up.

Second, more so than any time in our recent history, we have ASSETS. Ki, Kayal, Victor, Hooper, Mathews, Ledley. All guys who could easily be sold for decent money down south.

If a punt this year didn’t work, it would’t be fatal. 10 million pounds on the CB and striker. Fail to get CL entry. Sell 2 players, maybe at Christmas.

It sounds easy, I know. But if ever there was a time to do it, it is now.

    I think…..

I realise that things are changing, 40 odd thousand SB holders will soon be a thing of the past, unless we are fortunate enough to get into the CL group stages, when if we are lucky, PL will deem to splash out a few bob in the hope we can stay there.

I probably get about 3-4 e-mails a week from the club promoting this and that, aye, they are desperate for money.

Football is fast becoming a luxury item, maybes they should take a leaf out of the German book, they are experiancing vastly improved attendances.

Great post Mate, good to have a view that is different from Neil Lennon (good) Peter Lawwell(bad), it’s not personal it’s where the club is at and trying to make the changes that sure a bright future for Celtic and for our future Celts.

Wednesday is the biggest game for a long time for the club and a positive result should be a huge step in the right direction.

  21. Rangers fans groups have objected to the appointment of Harper MacLeod to investigate claims against the club’s previous owners.

The Glasgow firm will probe, on behalf of the Scottish Premier League, alleged dual contracts for players from 2000.

But a joint statement from three fans groups has questioned the process that could lead to the stripping of titles.

“We believe this is being driven by influential members of the SPL board”

“Harper MacLeod have acted for Celtic FC, who would be the main beneficiaries of any finding of guilt,” they state.

“Indeed, until it was recently removed, they included a testimonial from Celtic CEO Peter Lawwell on their website.

“The SPL could have chosen any law firm to carry out this investigation and it was extremely naive of them to appoint a firm with such a close connection to a rival club.”

The Rangers Supporters Assembly, the Rangers Supporters Trust and the Rangers Supporters Association suggest that, in discussing the stripping of titles, “it appears the SPL has assumed guilt when nothing has yet been proved”.

They urge the football authorities to ensure that the investigatiion is carried out “with the necessary independence, transparency and integrity”.

Rangers remain the subject of a tax investigation by Revenue and Customs into the use of employee benefit trusts to pay members of staff.

    SPL investigation

•The SPL is investigating how Rangers paid players between 2000 and 2011

•SPL said in June Rangers had “a prima facie case to answer in respect of [league] rules”

•Independent commission will rule on matter

•There are 18 available sanctions should the club be found in breach of SPL rules

While the courts have yet to rule on their legality, the SPL is investigating whether such earnings contravened its requirement that all earnings should be declared to the national parent body.

The SPL has stated that, once Harper MacLeod submits its evidence, an independent commission, likely to be made up of foreign nationals, will be appointed with the power to determine what sanctions, if any, are appropriate.

However, Rangers’ fans groups state: “We are concerned that, despite the SPL having 18 sanctions available, the only punishment being discussed is the most serious, yet no guilt has even been established.

“This, again, leads to a danger of exerting undue influence on the tribunal members through the media.

“We believe this is being driven by influential members of the SPL board and recently formed ‘steering committee’ with the most to gain.”

A BBC documentary, “Rangers, The Men Who Sold The Jerseys”, found evidence suggesting that 38 Rangers players had received side-letters giving undertakings to fund their sub-trusts with cash.

The fans groups suggest that such media coverage, and similar newspaper articles, will make it difficult for any investigators to remain impartial.

Celtic have previously confirmed that they established one EBT scheme in April 2005, which BBC Scotland understands was for the benefit of Brazilian midfielder Juninho Paulista.

“We would question why there appears to be no on-going investigation into the so-called ‘Juninho EBT’ used by Celtic FC,” add the Rangers fans groups.

“Our understanding is that Celtic acknowledged that this was not declared to the football authorities as part of their licence application.”

The SPL and Harper MacLeod have yet to comment on the supporters’ statement.

I am sure the majority would say yes.So where we really need to judge the Club,The manager, the players is in Europe if we fail to have a run in Europe this season we must question has there been any improvement over last season if the answer is no none we need to sit down and have a hard look at why we are not moving forward in Europe and make the required chanes.
