One for the Zonal Detesters, ‘Playing’ Ashley

499

It was far from beautiful flowing football at Inverness yesterday but the players raised the tempo sufficiently to get the result. Leigh Griffiths scored a classic poacher’s goal. He missed plenty against Kilmarnock and Ajax but that’s part of the territory of being a striker.

I was delighted to see Carlton Cole make his first appearance for the club, and for anyone since last season. His first touch could have resulted in a goal but his sheer body mass caused sufficient panic in the Inverness defence that a goal resulted soon enough. There’s a lot of work ahead as Carlton looks to get match fit but he’s exactly the kind of foil we’ve missed this season.

For all the Zonal Marking Detesters……… We’re now man-to-man and we’re still conceding headers in front of goal. The problem was not resolved with the switch to man-to-man. Defending corner kicks requires a physicality and alertness which we’ve missed all season. The sooner we fix this and get back to zonal the better.

On the subject of physicality, Dedryck, this is your hand. A brick wall should have been thrown up in front of Miles Storey at the Inverness goal. I accept we have unresolved issues at set-pieces and that we’ll lose goals as a consequence. Goals conceded on Thursday – a deflection-come-ricochet, and a breakaway, had little to do with the defence, but yesterday’s Inverness goal was just rank bad defending.

At Carfin on Friday I told Phil MacGiollaBhain that there was no way Dave King could weasel out of paying Mike Ashley his £5m, having said he would do so. Phil referred me to the “glib and shameless liar” part of King’s past and not to be so naive. He could have a point.

Ashley holds the aces here. Any attempt to ‘play’ him will fail.

  1. Corkcelt,

    Correct.

Johansen pinged it to Armstrong yesterday and it was Armstrong who took the short corner on Thurs

Well, we can only keep an eye on it for now. Justice will be done in the end.

Man-to-man simply makes players stand up and be counted – and we’ve had too many players hiding behind the zonal marking system while we ship barrowloads.

    —————————————————-

Seriously – we’ve shipped barrowloads of goals from corners using zonal marking have we? Do you have the facts to back that up?

Let me save you the trouble.

Domestically we have conceded 1 goal from 58 corners in 17 games.

In Europe we have conceded 4 goals from 51 corners in 11 games.

    Must be very small barrows.

  5. Who will pay for this appeal if it is granted Will it be out of the money collected by BDO for the creditors of which HMRC will be a major creditor, so in a way using HMRC’s money against HMRC to take this to the Supreme Court. Am I wrong here.

  7. Jungle Jim, You are one of the good ghuys,I’d hate to see you leave here. I trust your post at 2.48 is just cheerio for the afternoon and not a permanent flounce.

I am very disillusioned with site myself a few guys are so self centred that they don’t give a f**k if they are spoiling it for others as long they themselves feel vindicated. You cannot argue or reason with people like that. It is difficult to be selective and ignore posts particularly when there are two or three having a go at each other. When it stops being fun I just log off and take a bit of a break.

There is still a lot of good stuff and good people on here, when that changes I will go for good but it hasn’t happened yet, so I’m still going to hang on in, I hope you do too.

i think you may feel your slating the Celtic Trust, alas you are also bringing our boards credibility into question too,as the formal process of buying shares is a strictly legislated process.

Similarities there with your criticism of Res 12,when help support and assistance has come for the board as posted by those behind it.

It’s a bit odd, granted, but BDO are required to act in the best interests of the Creditors as a whole. There are assorted arguments as to what’s in their best interests in the current circumstances, but since the Creditors’ committee has exressed its view to BDO, one can only assume that they support the appeal.

The legal costs will be paid from the Creditors’ pot, and since there is no financial benefit from a ‘win’, the pot will be smaller as a consequnce. However, a ‘win’ for BDO means HMRC have less of the pot, and so the other creditors will get a larger share.

Factoring in the cost of the appeal, you can infer that the bigger slice of the smaller pot means a larger dividend for non-HMRC creditors, while a loss means almost nothing to them, little as they would stand to get from the current split.

I’ve seen folk talk of ‘huge’ costs to go to the Supreme Court, and I’ve also seen a QC suggest it can be done for less than £500K. From what I gather it’s maybe 3 or 4 days argument in court, plus prep time. £500K seems ball-parkish.

That’s my take. Others doubtless will have a different view.

Sorry, I don’t keep stats on conceding goals from OUR corners. If I did I would also know how many times we score from defending corners. (I remember Hooper scoring one)

And since you raised the subject, I note that James Vardy scored from Leicester defending a corner against Man U. And Leicester had everyone back defending from what I could tell. Vardy started his run from the edge of his own penalty box.

  13. The Battered Bunnet on

There’s no question but that BDO will be given leave to appeal. It’s a formality in this case.

  14. I hope the Celtic Trust ask for a retraction from TD.

In the absence of that sue him for defamation.

    Please.

Bolton Wanderers’ first-team players are yet to receive their wages for November, the club have confirmed.

A statement, published on the club’s official website on Monday afternoon, read: “Bolton Wanderers Football Club can today, Monday 30 November, confirm that the first team playing squad are yet to receive their wages for the month of November. This is due to the ongoing situation surrounding the club’s ownership off the field.”

Commenting as part of the statement, Trevor Birch, who was recently appointed as adviser to the club’s board, said: “This is due to a short-term funding issue. We are working hard behind the scenes and hope to have this resolved in a quick and timely manner and I will be meeting the players tomorrow to update them.”

This development comes at a grim time for the north-west club, who are bottom of the Championship, five points from safety, having failed to win any of their last 11 matches.

ANGERS’ liquidators BDO have announced that they will try to overturn the Court of Session ruling on the club’s use of EBT by appealing to the Supreme Court in London.

The liquidators will formally seek leave to appeal the decision from the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Earlier this month three senior judges temporarily ruled that the club had possibly illegally avoided millions of pounds in tax by paying players through Employee Benefit Trusts.

Rangers used the scheme from 2001 until 2010 to give tax-free loans to players and other staff.

But the taxman subsequently claimed these could be salary payments and should possibly be subject to tax.

HMRC lost two tax tribunals badly before pulling one back at case at the Court of Session. Three strikes and they are out. If it is a draw then Rangers go through on the no way to gaol law

Announcing its decision, BDO said: “Following discussions with the company’s legal advisers and the liquidation committee, the joint liquidators have filed an application seeking leave to appeal the Inner House of the Court of Session decision in respect of the EBT case.

“If the company successfully obtains leave to appeal, the appeal will be heard in the Supreme Court in London.

“The joint liquidators are not in a position at this stage to make any further comment in respect of the appeal.”
