One for the Zonal Detesters, ‘Playing’ Ashley

499

It was far from beautiful flowing football at Inverness yesterday but the players raised the tempo sufficiently to get the result. Leigh Griffiths scored a classic poacher’s goal. He missed plenty against Kilmarnock and Ajax but that’s part of the territory of being a striker.

I was delighted to see Carlton Cole make his first appearance for the club, and for anyone since last season. His first touch could have resulted in a goal but his sheer body mass caused sufficient panic in the Inverness defence that a goal resulted soon enough. There’s a lot of work ahead as Carlton looks to get match fit but he’s exactly the kind of foil we’ve missed this season.

For all the Zonal Marking Detesters……… We’re now man-to-man and we’re still conceding headers in front of goal. The problem was not resolved with the switch to man-to-man. Defending corner kicks requires a physicality and alertness which we’ve missed all season. The sooner we fix this and get back to zonal the better.

On the subject of physicality, Dedryck, this is your hand. A brick wall should have been thrown up in front of Miles Storey at the Inverness goal. I accept we have unresolved issues at set-pieces and that we’ll lose goals as a consequence. Goals conceded on Thursday – a deflection-come-ricochet, and a breakaway, had little to do with the defence, but yesterday’s Inverness goal was just rank bad defending.

At Carfin on Friday I told Phil MacGiollaBhain that there was no way Dave King could weasel out of paying Mike Ashley his £5m, having said he would do so. Phil referred me to the “glib and shameless liar” part of King’s past and not to be so naive. He could have a point.

Ashley holds the aces here. Any attempt to ‘play’ him will fail.

The whole dead rangers + new sevco saga never ceases to throw up mind warping stuff. What would the average zombie think about bdo appealing when we can’t get our heads around it .

Sevco – the gift that just keeps giving

Haha, I’m not sure about Ronnie, the point made by the caller was valid towards the treatment RD has had compared to the tin hat man (thought that was more appropriate rather than the paper hat man) too papish for Hun interlopers:)

Did the MSM reaction to Stokes stupidity surprise anyone ??

Does anyone really care what the MSM think ??

As for Stokes……..hasn’t kicked a ball for many months…I can understand why he’d get annoyed finding himself behind Ciftci for team selection

Stokes time is up …non story

If McGregor is the answer I dont know what the question is…..a moderate player with a questionable work ethic …who does score the odd very good goal

  6. CRC: Thanks for offer of drinks on Saturday next but I haven’t mastered by-location yet so hopefully I can take you up on the offer on January 23rd when I’m over next. Well done on the fundraising for Shay and look forward to your other endeavours you mentioned.

Dena29: Yeah, long time no see. Hopefully will catch you in January. Not sure when I’ll get over after that, February is a non-runner and March not looking good either. hope all is well and look forward to some hugs and Celtic, Celtic chants.

Blantyretim: I can put by a calendar for you and bring it over on Jan 23 if that suits.

  7. I didn’t see any tang able difference in how we were defending on Sunday.

However if we did go to complete man marking, which I don’t believed we did, and it failed after one attempt is that enough of a case to say zonal is better? We have watched with our own eyes, zonal fail on numerous occasions. So why jump straight back to it, if we did drift form it on Sunday completely, without proper game time using man marking.

Preferably I’d like to so a mixture of the two. Identify every opponents strongest attacking players at set pieces and man mark them throughout while zonally marking rest of area.

It’s hardly frigin combustion engine science!

  8. Gooooooood evening fellow Tims :-)

Nice to see some football chat back on the ole blog

The Inverness goal, agree Boyata could not put in tackle or he would have been off with Colum in charge. My frustration, was Boyata stopping at that stage, watch he game again and you will see Biton passing him to get back, of Boyata had continued his run he may have got back on the line after Gordon’s save, Boyata gave up once passed.

I would also like to see Armstrong in the holding role with Biton – now both Johansen and Armstrong have been poor this season, but Aarmstrong form is probably down to playing wide left ? Play him in middle or holding midfield and we will see a different player

That’s what frustrates me with Ronny, how can he not see this ?

    Hail Hail

  10. Marrakesh Express@3.44pm today:

I was in attendance at the 7-1 League Cup Final and have written of the day on previous occasions ( my late Mum knitted me a green and white block scarf for that special day ). I also attended Lisbon, Milan and Seville as well as 3 other European semis which we should have won- MTK Budapest, Liverpool and Milan. I have an older brother who also saw all these games.

  12. 67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on

Haven’t read back yet, but the BDO decision to request leave to appeal is not based on the necessary ‘legal’ challenge criteria and will not, therefore, be allowed to proceed to appeal …… they’re simply trying to prevent HMRC from receiving the lions share of the available ‘creditor’ money, and that is not a consideration …..desperation springs to mind…

What is eminently more interesting is ….who has committed to pay any appeal bill (£M’s) ?

Is it david Murray …… ?

Is it clubs in EPL fearing this Precedent…..?

    All very interesting …..

……. and the loaf is being pursued by Fulham ?…….. now that would be hilarious …. !!!!

    Away to read back….

This season he’s ‘hardly kicked a baw’.

Where was he playing for us last season?

I agree that playing on the left of the 3 might not be his best position but I think he’s simply going through a dip in form after having a couply of niggling injuries.

For the avoidance of doubt I disagree with some of your posts.

I would place McGregor in the same camp as Dylan McGeough / Jackson Irvine / Paul McGowan, couple of decent shows but not at the level we need. Expect to see him at Dundee Utd or Ross County in a couple of seasons. Sounds a bit harsh but I don’t see him holding down a regular place although I’d love to be proved wrong….

  20. Cowiebhoy,

Well there’s the answer. Get him aw excited before every game. :)

  21. Hello again all you young rebels.

A fantastic turnout for our xmas BBQ in the Mornington beach park

to raise funds for the sick kids hospital and great credit to Paddymacoz

and the committee members for their organisation of the event.

Never spoke much to Paddy as every time i turned round he was tying

another Celtic banner to the trees and with the reb tunes blasting out

of massive speakers he wouldn’t have heard much anyway.

Even better was seeing our very own Bobby Geddes arrive with his

family and friends, he hasn’t made the last few events because of his

illness ( MND ) and although confined to a wheel chair now and cannot

communicate verbally he was determined to be there and the look of

delight on his face as he watched his kids play footie with the rest of

the young hoopies was a joy to behold.

The main event of the day was world cup soccer and the captain of each

team picked a country now don’t ask me why but when Paddy decided

on Uzbekistan everybody went …Who ? … as it was he only lasted 5 mins

and then his knees went, well seeing he was a boxer and didn’t run much,

a few meaty tackles went in especially when the wee mhan nutmegged me

for the third time and i hit him with my hamburger.

Apart from everyone enjoying the day the main reason was to raise funds for

the kids was a great success and our mr & mrs Santa will distribute pressies

bought with the donations from businesses, members, well-wishers etc.

and even people who were just passing on the day heard the music and just

gave, mind you not sure if they knew the songs but they were tapping their

feet anyway and the Celtic ethos gained us another few friends.

Now to watch the game recorded on CTV any win is good enough for this

    happy clapper today.
