One for the Zonal Detesters, ‘Playing’ Ashley

499

It was far from beautiful flowing football at Inverness yesterday but the players raised the tempo sufficiently to get the result. Leigh Griffiths scored a classic poacher’s goal. He missed plenty against Kilmarnock and Ajax but that’s part of the territory of being a striker.

I was delighted to see Carlton Cole make his first appearance for the club, and for anyone since last season. His first touch could have resulted in a goal but his sheer body mass caused sufficient panic in the Inverness defence that a goal resulted soon enough. There’s a lot of work ahead as Carlton looks to get match fit but he’s exactly the kind of foil we’ve missed this season.

For all the Zonal Marking Detesters……… We’re now man-to-man and we’re still conceding headers in front of goal. The problem was not resolved with the switch to man-to-man. Defending corner kicks requires a physicality and alertness which we’ve missed all season. The sooner we fix this and get back to zonal the better.

On the subject of physicality, Dedryck, this is your hand. A brick wall should have been thrown up in front of Miles Storey at the Inverness goal. I accept we have unresolved issues at set-pieces and that we’ll lose goals as a consequence. Goals conceded on Thursday – a deflection-come-ricochet, and a breakaway, had little to do with the defence, but yesterday’s Inverness goal was just rank bad defending.

At Carfin on Friday I told Phil MacGiollaBhain that there was no way Dave King could weasel out of paying Mike Ashley his £5m, having said he would do so. Phil referred me to the “glib and shameless liar” part of King’s past and not to be so naive. He could have a point.

Ashley holds the aces here. Any attempt to ‘play’ him will fail.

If BDO are working purely in the interests of the creditors, why are they not sharing the money out now and giving them (including HMRC)say 5p in the £ instead of pursuing an appeal which would end up with them paying out say 1p at the end of a lengthy appeal ….whose interest is served by the BDO appeal being allowed, with a 2 year delay in settling with the creditors…….let me tell you whose interes

I heard somebody say (paraphrasing) “Illegality doesn’t really come into it with EBT’s. The trusts themselves were legal at the time and HMRC retrospectively decided that they were being misused as a way to avoid tax on remunerations. Rangers cannot be accused of acting illegally as EBT’s were legal at the time. They can be accused of being reckless as they must have known that HMRC may in the future decide they were being misused.”

Surely, if you were abusing a trust by using it for something outside of the agreed rules then it can be illegal?

Even if EBT’s were legal at the time for payments that were not associated with salary, surely Rangers did something illegal by paying salaries via EBT’s?

  15. Cowiebhoy @8.30pm tonight: agree I have been very fortunate to have seen some of the great highs in the Celtic Story. I have also had a few lows which act as a counterweight. Losing to Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup Final with Jock Stein as their manager and Raith Rovers in the League Cup Final at Ibrox were real low points but I can still recall , even after all these years, the sheer hurt of losing consecutive Scottish Cup Finals in 1955 and 1956 to Clyde ( after a replay- I was both games ) and Hearts respectively. Following the Celtic has been journey- sometimes frustrating but you know in your heart that the highs are just around the corner ( to paraphrase wee Fergus ) and I know they will be there again.

I pointed out on the Evening Times site that taking out even a convertible loan to pay back another loan is clearly at odds with the headline “Rangers have the funds to pay back Ashley”.

    It was deleted.

  17. Bah humbug,

Imagine a developed country high fiving each other becuase they think raising charity money for a so called developed country children’s hospital is a noble cause ffs and not an embarrassing indictment of the statement their society to make.

Too meek to stand, no charity for war machines oh no, that comes straight from the tax payers pocket but looking after children, well that’s a different story, look how great we are, we let children’s lives be dependent on charity, but the war machine, well them funds can’t be dependent on anything other than babyblood, aye well done.

    ================================================

Man-to-man simply makes players stand up and be counted – and we’ve had too many players hiding behind the zonal marking system while we ship barrowloads.

It’s no quick fix but at tleast it will allow us to see who’s got commitment, focus and the will to contest a ball, all sadly lacking this season when crosses have hit danger areas.

No hiding for the shirkers with man-to-man, no throwing arms in the air and looking around to shift blame; they have to get in there and get it right, which adds focus to a defender’s game.

    ##################

So whilst you are correct that you never mentioned solely conceding from corners, you quoted from the article which specifically talks about “defending corner kicks”.

Everything you then say seems to me to relate to defending corners.

So rather than me reeling my neck in, perhaps you should re-read what you wrote and consider the context it was written in and concede that it’s a fair assumption that you were taking about solely defending corners.

    Great news for Tony Stokes!!!!!

Mr Stokes took to social media at the weekend to emphasise at great lengths that what was pissing him off was not playing regularly.

And the wages did not come in to it – In fact, it was disrespectful for people to think that this somehow came into his thinking.

He said that. He really did.

    Well good news Tony.

Why don’t you go to Bolton in January.

    You’ll definitely get a game.

And you won’t have people assuming you’re interested due to the regular wages.

    Go for it!!!!!!
