One game at a time, Celtic, raffle for Hogmanay tickets

175

There’s a disconcerting level of chatter about players’ fitness ahead of the weekend game despite the fact that we face Ross County tomorrow evening at Celtic Park. County fell apart in October, losing four to Celtic, Motherwell and Aberdeen, but they’ve lost only once since then, a run of form which has seen them leap to the top half of the table.

This game is no ‘gimmie’. One game at a time, Celtic.

The players were back at Lennoxtown yesterday after taking Christmas day off. The rest and associated uptake in calories was probably worthwhile for a team which has played seven games already this month.

Raffle for two tickets for Ibrox game on Hogmanay

You can win two tickets for Celtic’s visit to Ibrox on Saturday, courtesy of club sponsor, Intelligent Car Leasing, in aid of our Mary’s Meals project. Funds raised will go towards putting food on the table for kids attending the Sean Devereux Primary School in Liberia.

To win all you need to do is donate a minimum of £5 at this MyDonate page AND email me your address: celticquicknews@gmail.com , putting Liberia in the subject line of your email. The winner will be chosen from the emails received and will be verified with the donations, so please put a common name or pseudonym in both.

The competition is open for one day only, closing at 13:00 tomorrow, Wednesday, 28th, so there’s not going to be a lot of time to enter. It’s a great chance to get your Hogmanay off to a flier with a friend.

The money goes directly to Mary’s Meals and will be allocated to the Sean Devereux school within days. Even if you don’t win, you’ll have done a great thing for spending £5, to get on with it.

Stunning work again by Intelligent Car Leasing, who could have used these tickets for corporate clients but chose to help our appeal instead.  Tickets will be posted securely (or I’ll deliver by hand, if you’re local).  Please make sure you monitor your mailbox or leave a phone number.

And yes, I get the irony: one game at a time Celtic/win tickets for the game after next.

Thinking about who might referee the Hogmanay game at the Crumbledome …

The SFA currently has 7 referees on the UEFA list :

Elite: Willie Collum, Craig Thomson (I know , I know)

First Category : John Beaton, Bobby Madden

Second Category: Andrew Dallas, Kevin Clancy

Third Category : Don Robertson (McLean no longer on UEFA list)

Our 2 games against Sevco so far this season have been refereed by ‘Elites’ Collum and Thomson, plus Collum had our game v Accies and Thomson is on Hertz v Killie tonight so think that rules them out anyway.

Madden and Beaton both being rested midweek before Hogmanay game, so between them I think. Beaton got the League Cup Final, so perhaps Madden will be asked to get a ‘grip’ of a game the Huns must win at a ground he knows so well !

Decision already made by now at a recent Referees Committee / Lodge meeting, but hopefully we will be so far ahead it won’t matter. What was it big Jock said …

“If you’re good enough, the referee doesn’t matter.”

Some have posted on here that The Sun printed a story yesterday/today that the deal was on the brink of collapsing. Some have posted that the selling club have asked for £6 million after reports that they had agreed to sell for £3 million and after personal terms had been agreed.

The Republican Party’s Trumpmas (as it will now be called): The RNC are now comparing Trump to Jesus (who, with a name like that, Trump suspects was an illegal Mexican)….

“Over two millennia ago, a new hope was born into the world, a Savior who would offer the promise of salvation to all mankind.

Just as the three wise men did on that night, this Christmas heralds a time to celebrate the good news of a new King.”

Okay, I made up the Trumpmas bit… but the rest is a genuine quote from Priebus ….. bloody hell!

I’m on holiday in Florida. Being reported here that Portland Timbers have pulled out of the Nagbe sale to Celtic.

*So we offer Portland 3m for Darlington Nagbe, agree terms and then the Timbers change the rules, ala Torino and big Jozo or us and krackerjack from Split in 2010 when again the rules were changed and we walked out, and ask for 6 m.

I find this a bit strange no not the Azzuri or Croat slant but the American one. As far as I’m aware the MLS owns all the players contracts and similar to all US sports including the NFL, NBA and MLB players are not bought and sold but are traded and unlike FIFA rules without the players’ consent.

After the lessons learned from the old NASL when clubs threw money away tae over the hill and over aged players, i.e. Pele, Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, Cruyff, Neeskens, Der Bomber, Best, Marsh and Cardiff’s most famous Italian Chinaglia which became unsustainable, whereas NFL owners in 1980 were spending on average 40% of the team’s budget on player salaries, NASL owners were averaging over 70% of their budget.

As such in 1985, the NASL suspended operations for the upcoming season, when only the Minnesota Strikers and Toronto Blizzard were interested in playing.

The latter incidentally featured a variety of Scottish players including one of the most despised among Celtic supporters, the thug who ruined Brian McLaughlin I career.

Ironically he would be replaced as Tim Public Enemy No. 1 11 years later by the failed New York Bulls coach.

So instead of operating as an association of independently owned teams, MLS is a single entity in which each team is owned and controlled by the league’s investors.

The investor-operators control their teams as owners control teams in other leagues, and are commonly, but inaccurately, referred to as the team’s owners.

MLS salaries are limited by a salary cap, which has been in place since the league’s inception in 1996.

The purpose of the salary cap is to prevent the team’s owners from unsustainable spending on player salaries and to prevent a competitive imbalance among teams.

When an MLS club sells one of its players overseas, the club and the league split the transfer revenues, with the club retaining from 33% to 75% depending on the player’s status and tenure.

So it is NOT the Timbers that decide DN’s trade to us but the MLS as was the case when we tried to sign Torontonian Dwayne Anthony De Rosario.

  18. mike in toronto on

    Tontine Tim

With the reported interest in DN, I was watching some video of him, to get a better sense of what kind of player he is. Impressed. And the video posted over the holidays (sorry, I can remember by who), showed he has a lot of character…. seemed like a really good person/professional. However, I’m still not sure, he is the sort of player we need. He seems to play in the same area as Rogic, and perhaps even Armstrong ….. and I like Ryan Christie …(think he has a lot of promise and would like to see him get a run in the team). I wonder if we dont have other needs that should be filled first.

For Europe, I think we need more of a proper defensive midfielder in the Wanayama mould … or even more of a deep lying playmaker like Pirlo (okay… admittedly, not a lot of them around…. at least, that we can afford ) ….

That’s the “Dallas” effect (he was Collina’s 4th Official in 2002 World Cup Final in Germany). UEFA is a haven for former SFA employees over the years – even one Campbell Ogilvie has acted as a UEFA Match Observer !
