O’Neill, McInnes and the winners’ edge

159

Hearts’ lead, which extended to 8 points after their win over Celtic 16 days ago, now looks more precarious.  Subsequent draws against St Mirren and Dundee United, when they were fortunate to take a point in both games, has seen dreams of “This is the season” dissipate from Hearts fans’ minds.

Still, we are in no position to be complacent.  Late wins over St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Motherwell postponed Celtic’s league breakdown until it eventually hit the buffers against Dundee and Hearts.  Martin O’Neill has given the players a confidence they were lacking, but Martin knows too well how quickly that quality can disappear.

When you are seven points off the pace (with a game in hand), every game feels like a must-win.  Inevitably, that will not always work out as planned.  It is little wonder Martin attended St Mirren’s game on Sunday, their visit to Celtic Park in 11 days is already on his mind.

What Martin has in his favour is decades experience as a serial winner.  I like Derek McInnes as a coach.  He is accomplished and would have been a better choice than several of the serial losers Newco have appointed over the last 13 years.  What he doesn’t have, is a track record of winning trophies.

In 18 years as manager he delivered Aberdeen a League Cup (on penalties against Inverness), as well as lower league titles with St Johnstone and Kilmarnock.  Another former St Johnstone manager, Callum Davidson, won more major trophies in a single season.

If we look harshly on McInnes, he lacks a winners’ edge, whereas Martin O’Neill drips with this quality.  Martin is unlikely to be in place for the title run-in; whoever takes his place will need the same edge.

  1. Just an example of our thinking. These kids should be coached by up and coming European coaches, not Johnny Hayes. The whole coaching staff,is jobs for the boys. Disgraceful.

Another thing. Is it too expensive to put names on the strips,FFS.World class in everything we do.

  2. Wilfried Nancy’s name has started to gather real weight in Celtic’s search for a new manager, and the reason’s clear, he builds clubs, not just teams.

Speaking to CeltsAreHere, NBC4 reporter Orri Benatar described a coach who connects quickly, earns trust, and gets results. It’s not about hype; it’s about doing things the right way.

Ange Ball certainly, there’s a lot of heavy metal to it from an attacking standpoint. I think Nancy’s style is a little more possession based. It’s a lot about utilising fullbacks to get forward and create good crossing opportunities.

“He really brings the best out of his players, a good example is Max Arfsten, now he’s almost a shoe-in to be on the USA roster for the World Cup next year.”

For Celtic, Nancy brings an intriguing mix, a clear football identity, strong man-management, and a record of improving players. He’s known for creating structure while still encouraging freedom on the pitch, something that has defined Celtic’s best football in recent years.

The Ange comparisons are fair to a point. Both value attacking football and brave possession play, but Nancy’s approach is more controlled than chaotic. It’s easy to see why he appeals, though moving from MLS to Celtic would be a big leap in pressure and expectation.

Great write up from American Press.

    ……

Hi Chairboy hope you are well.

My trolls and I have just finished this survey.

    And here are our findings.

Rodgers initially says that he is pleased with the “club” after every Transfer Window.

Then after our first negative result he starts whispering that it was the “club” who bought the iffy players in question, not him.

That digging of tunnels underneath the “club” creates toxicity and winds up Rodgers fans who start to think that Rodgers has been shafted by the PLC.

    THAT generates toxicity.

And it is down right sleekit, sneaky, shifty, Hunnish, un-Celtic like behavior, in our opinions.

S here is the survey and thanks for your time.

Could Rodgers speaking out of both sides of his mouth be viewed as toxic?

    Absolutely.

Did DD get rid of the toxicity?

    Absolutely.

Are the Celtic Collective full of fans who speak out of both sides of their mouths, toxic?

    Absolutely.

    Are the Snp toxic?

    Absolutely.

Are Celtic fans who’s heads are so far up the Snp’s ass toxic?

    Absolutely.

Are Celtic fans who vote for politicians who tried to put them in jail for being Celtic fans, idiots?

    Absolutely.

Can idiot fans be easily manipulated by toxic politicians, or toxic Celtic managers?

    Absolutely.

Are the toxic fans and a sleekit, agenda driven manager, a good fit for Celtic?

    Absolutely not.

Are most Celtic fans who’s heads were so far up Rodgers ass, susceptible to being wound up the wrong way because they could not see clearly?

    Absolutely.

Are Celtic fans unwitting toxicity drivers because they are dim, vain, easily led, dullards, who point fingers without realizing that there are actually 3 sides to every story?

    Absolutely.

Toxicity has been a Central thread of Celtic FC’s DNA since the McCann/Tory/ takeover in 1994.

    Lobby/controlled/Toryism generates toxicity.

The Snp are a Tory-proxy party who speak out of both sides of their mouths, delivering unrelenting Tory/Labour/Austerity to millions of innocent Scottish people, then telling them that it was the London Tories blue or Red who did it to them.

    Does this generate toxicity?

    Absolutely.

Do Celtic fans vote for toxicity?

    Absolutely.

Do Celtic fans vote for the toxic Snp and then join the Snp in saying that it is the London Tories/Red/Blue/Green/Yellow/Purple/Whatever who are creating the toxicity?

    Absolutely.

Are post 1994 Celtic fans easily led?

    Absolutely.

Are the toxic PLC and toxic Rodgers aware of this?

    Absolutely.

    Are trolls toxic?

Depends on your point of view.

Who gets to decide what a troll is?

    Toxic entitled people?

    Toxic Rodgers?

    Toxic PLC?

    Toxic scumbag media?

    Toxic found out scumbag MPs/MSPs?

    Easily led Celtic fans?

Does the judgement calls of these respective interests generate toxicity?

    Absolutely.

So trolls are actually the innocently smeared good guys?

    Absolutely.

    Here endeth the lesson. lol

SFA SPFL should be getting held to account by the sporting media, but they are to busy hanging Trusty whatever sells

To Celtics credit we are still attempting to maintain youth development in Scotland, the B team under severe age restrictions with unsuitable venues (plastic pitches) are not conducive to good development for club and country

For any club at any level in football indeed most sports the requirement to test yourself against better opponents is a fundamental factor in development and improvement, if I was playing in the lowland league/div 2 I would want to test myself and play against the best Celtic FC could provide, it sadly says it all of the small minded committee mentality they fail to see the benefits such as they are to all concerned

Why not propose to move the STRD deadline to one month After the summer Transfer Window closes and then you can show the PLC that you are not full of it and at least gain some leverage over the PLC?

How many STRD boycotts will be needed, 2? 3?

    Bottom line for me is:

Why should any PLC listen to fans who were either stupid enough to go along with PLC’s £49 save Rangers trick in 2016 AFTER Sevco got promoted, or these fans were sleekitly hoping that no one would notice this scandal.

    Good morning CQN.

Another fine day to be a Celt.

… and those reservoirs filling up nicely.

    What more do we need?

  18. In a world of ifs, buts and maybes, does the rumour of Andy Robertson joining us make sense to anyone? Anyone think it would be a good move or just another expensive and short-term signing of a player who is approaching the end of his career? A DD vanity signing like many others that makes little sense other than for generating headlines and sales merchandise?

Clearly he has been a top EPL player and can still play at that level but what’s he got left in the tank? Does the other very expensive LB we have make way for him or does KT play in a 3-man defence with Robertson a wingback (as happens with Scotland)?

IF we were likely to be playing in the CL next season, I could perhaps see the case for it . . . but that is not likely.

  19. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Agree with earlier comments about our named coaches.

I’ve no great insight but, from looking in? ….

    … feels chummy.

Don’t get me wrong – I like the idea of the Celtic identity being shared with young players by proper Celtic men … but they need to have coaching talent too obviously.

Some of the guys in place now or recently, I’m not sure about – only from hearing them speak and project. (Communication being key).

I might be being unkind and uninformed.

One guy I do like is Stephen McManus.

He speaks well and has a calmness and authority about him.

Plus he was a player of (let’s be honest) limited ability who gave his all and got his reward.

I like that kind of role model.

“Lads, if I can do it …” stuff

One final point on the pathway.

It also needs to exist for coaches if we are realistically looking to get the best talent into the roles.

Doesn’t take great imagination to consider just one type of pathway for an ambitious, talented coach

Welcome good coach whoever you are, it’s the ‘system’ that awaits him and how much management he has that’s the remaining problem.

The jury is still very much permanently out on that one, especially given that we’re still busy having emptied the last one, and lost one, and emptied one and lost one, and emptied one,all the way back to MON mark one.

Good luck to the guy if he gets to put the cones out at Lennoxtown, chances are he’s rocking up for the same gig, as the last manager. Pointless, unless they change a mentality that permeates from the top to the bottom.

In between we have scouting, academy, development, bid low sell high, everybody and their granny recommending blah, blah, blah. Midgtjylland with 12,000 supporters are leaving us in 27th place, in the tournament below.

Who is the Celtic manager? the job title might be filled, but whether it’s WGS and Willo Flood or BR and Arne Engels, if you know your history we need to learn about investment?

In a world of ifs, buts and maybes, does the rumour of Andy Robertson joining us make sense to anyone?

    ——–

For me there’s a kinda romance in 5’8″ Andy coming back to his boyhood club. He’s 31, has a welter of EPL experience, is a true pro and would add more leadership to our squad. Yet there is the chance he will not be the flying and foraging Scotsman we all remember and – like KT – be an underwhelming signing.

If a short-arsed LB is what we’re really deemed to need, 28-yr old Greg T is only playing domestic games for PAOK (and not Euro ties) so why not tempt him back.

Better still, go with youth and go all out to sign 27-yr old Saracchi from Boca and lets get the best of this new Emilio for the next five years or so.

  23. Robertson getting doubted? Probably the best LB in 5 of last 6 years in epl, super fit, never injured, we could get 3/4 seasons from him no bother IMO

  24. Addendum – I forgot to say I liked what I saw of Inamura but don’t know the deficiencies that are keeping him from getting a sniff at LB. I hope Marty will be forced to him a run now that Marcelo’s cooked his hammy.

  25. BSR,

Exactly what I have been saying. No matter who gets the job,the Board will have to do a 180 .It cannot be the same old, same old.A few happy to crow about Trophies won,and how much we have in the bank, but the football world has changed,we have not.A new manager, with bright idea, will wither and die with our present system.

If they are preparedd to change,by all means stay.Do what you are brilliant at,but keep your noses out of the football side.Make money for that only. That’s YOUR job.The Board have neglected this too long. The infrastructure, the Stadium, while poking about in the football side.

Anyway, after much deliberations, and research, white smoke has appeared .I am going with Monsieur Nancy.Fresh, exciting, like Ange was.We badly need it.

  26. If anyone can show me a better LB than Andy Robertson, feel free.Up their with a he very best.Could play with Barca,PSG.On a free with 3 great years left in him !!!!.

  28. Bada Bing – would you have KT and AR in the same team, like they sometimes are with Scotland?

On the assumption Saracchi will be gone in the summer as there is no option to buy him, we need another LB for sure and they don’t come much better than AR.

If Nancy becomes the new coach, and he sticks with his preferred 3421 formation, it would work well with AR as the wingback and KT as leftside of a 3-man defence (with Scales as other option).

    For example and (not saying this is strongest XI and no idea if Nancy would switch his normal formation to accomodate the likes of Jota and Tounekti, but he does not apparently play with out and out wingers);

  29. If Celtic FC were operating without a management team I could understand the panic amongst some on here, and elsewhere it has to be said, and their subsequent wishes (or is yet another demand) to bring a new manager in, but the fact is we have a steady hand on the tiller in Martin O’Neill, assisted by someone with a wealth of football experience (not all positive) at club and national level in Shaun Maloney. The toughest challenges facing us between now and the New Year are in the Europa League, Feyonoord away, and Roma at home, (and I know some want to write off the EL) and if we could get three or four points from those games we would still have a lot to play for in that tournament early doors 2026. A tough ask as the Ozzys are wont to say. On the domestic front, Martin and Shaun surely deserve the opportunity to win the League Cup Final after our efforts in the semi-final, and looking ahead in the SPL it is not beyond the realms of possibility that Martin and Shaun will reel Hearts in by Christmas. BRRB wont be the only one drinking to that.
