O’NEILL SPELLS OUT WHAT TO EXPECT FROM NEW BHOY

0
MARTIN O’NEILL has told the Celtic fans not to expect a Chris Sutton or John Hartson clone once new striker Tomas Cvancara agrees his loan move from Borussia Monchengladbach.
The towering Czech Republic international frontman will seal the deal, which has an option to buy, once he passes a medical.
Cvancara netted 24 goals in 49 appearances for Sparta Prague before his £9.2million switch to the Bundesliga in 2023. However, his scoring rate dropped dramatically with the German side and he claimed a mere four goals in 58 outings.
And the lean spell continued during last year’s stint at Turkish club Antalyaspor where he collected only two strikes in 13 matches.

IN THE FIRING LINE…Martin O’Neill faces the media in Bologna.

O’Neill, though, has seen enough of the 6ft 3in attack-leader to make his move to bring him to Parkhead and he will almost certainly be part of the matchday squad for the crucial Premiership encounter with Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

The interim manager, speaking to the media in Italy before tomorrow night’s Europa League match against Bologna, opened up on the imminent signing who is urgently required to bolster the champions’ faltering presence in the frontline.

Asked if Cvancara was a throwback to physical specimens such as John Hartson and Chris Sutton,

O’Neill answered: “No, he’s not a target man, believe it or not. He’s not really that type.

“I just want to say that he’s not the John Hartson type or the type when Chris played alongside Henrik Larsson.

“He’s quick, he’s agile and he wants to prove himself. If you think he’s the immediate answer to any sort of problem we have, I’m not sure I’d throw that sort of responsibility on him.”

O’Neill admitted he remains hopeful of more new faces before the signing deadline on Monday February 2.

The Irishman, preparing for his third European tie since his return, continued: “That would be nice. We need some help.

“We’ve got some time to get a few more players in if it’s at all possible. I’m hoping there will be.”

O’Neill would not commit to other signings before Sunday and added: “This tie takes the immediate priority.

“We get back on Friday, we’re working away and that I couldn’t really tell you at this minute.”
