O’Neill stability contrasts with Aberdeen flux

288

If you are my generation, you will still wince at the prospect of a visit to Pittodrie.  Despite a calamitous 2025, Aberdeen managed to beat Celtic in May’s Scottish Cup Final, so even younger fans are entitled to be cautious ahead of tonight.

That sentiment will not be understood by Aberdeen fans.  After a resounding 6-2 win over Livingston 10 days ago, they crashed to earth at Rugby Park on Saturday, losing 3-0 to Kilmarnock, with club captain Graeme Shinnie shown a red card.  By any measure, they are a team in crisis.

Like Martin O’Neill, their boss Peter Leven has the role on an interim basis, his third such stint.  Unlike O’Neill, Leven does not expect to remain in charge until the end of the season.  His colourful director of football, Lutz Pfannenstiel, hopes to make a permanent appointment soon.  That state of flux contrasts with the stability Martin offers Celtic.

Last night’s win for St Mirren was welcome – to a point.  The result can only be enjoyed if Celtic take all three points tonight.  Martin O’Neill has set Celtic on an exceptional run of form, but no team in this league race can be confident of winning any game.

  1. Happy Wednesday TexasTim.

Breakdown of article, paragraph by paragraph, will land in our inbox soon.

    HH!

  2. Just as a glimmer of light appears…Boycott!

Always said, the only thing that will stop Celtic is Celtic.

  3. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

From going toe-to-toe with Bayern to getting excited about Hearts losing a game. In less than a year. Takes some doing, that. Kind of thing that would be hard to achieve if you were “incompetent”.

  4. Backing the team doesn’t mean you are backing the board.

    No to a boycot.

What I would give to be signing my heart out at the game(s).

  5. Maolmuire O Muirgheasa on

Advocating a boycott is like recommending surgery to save a patient from the doctor.

It means the institution meant to serve us is now the thing causing harm and a frank admission that all reasonable dialogue has failed.

Do not question the boycott, the boycott is the result. Question what made it inevitable.

  6. The reaction in the stadium on Sunday should leave no doubt about the feelings of much of the support to this Board, they might have cloth ears right enough.

  7. Turkeybhoy @ 7:21 pm,

Spot on post – the fact that the Brendan loathers can’t bring themselves to admit they were wrong, strongly suugests they knew the anti BR stuff was b.s.

The last six months has exposed many serious issues with the Celtic organisation – what it hasn’t exposed is any wrong doing by our erstwile manager, despite volumes of accusatory comment – quite the contrary, each week seems to bring further vindication of Brendan’s decisions and actions.

    Hail Hail

  8. Celtic is on its 4th Manager this season, 2 of these would have been unnecessary with a competent Football Department, we can but dream of that. 3 points are essential tonight.

  9. TIM MALONE WILL TELL on 4TH FEBRUARY 2026 10:27 AM

The crunch will come at season ticket renewal – and I suspect that the board are backing themselves to win that war of wills.

That said, I would think there is a good chance that we will see board and executive changes at the end of the season – either that or Celtic are in a downward spiral.

    ………………….

One way to test the testicular fortitude of the Board would be for season ticket holders to take a leaf out of the Board’s book. The Board waits until the last day of every transfer window to get business done. Everyone should keep their money in their pockets until season ticket renewal deadline day. This will keep the Board in a sweat the same way they keep their money fans in a sweat wondering if we’ll get any players signed.

How will we know if it’s working? We’ll know when a few days before the deadline, they’ll announce an extension to the deadline. Fans should then repeat the action and we won’t be long in getting a reaction from them.

The Celtic Collective is getting less collective by the week.

Without wanting to insult anyone isnt thats what’s known as the narcissism of small differences?

  11. The point made by Theoriginalsadiesboy there makes 100% good sense to me, that’s what I’ll be doing.

And I’ll be boycotting the boycott, what load of nonsense, back the team, back MON and Shaun, there’s a league and a cup to be won!

  12. TBB,

Your version of the events at the Falkirk match, which caused the most recent ban for the GB,are nothing more than the statements put out by Celtic FC,aka,The Board.

The Stewards in that section, act like ” Ice Agents”.Total assholes.Non stop harassment.backed up by Glassgows finest on the orders of Ex COP, ,Nicholsons, best mate, and appoined by him,Mark Hargreaves.A hater of all things GB.

Better to get some facts, and not to just Parrot the Party Line.

    No offence.

  13. glendalystonsils on

The Emperor and his board have done enough damage to the football side of things without the fans compounding it. Every and any reasonable strategy which does not affect the team’s performance on the park should be explored, but no boycott.

It could cost us the league , a league which is very much winnable .

With all due respect, the video is objective evidence.

I can’t be doing with folk who can’t call out hunnish behaviour just because it’s their guys behaving like huns.

Buy your ticket, take your place, behave within the law, support your team.

It’s really not that difficult a concept.

  15. Derek Rae was on the Scottish Football Social club podcast this week. He gave some interesting insights into the project at Aberdeen at the moment, there is some serious strategic thinking going on there with the mid term very much in their plans. Interesting thoughts about tge new DoF and the culture hes trying to bring with him from German football. DR seems like a thoughtful and well-informed guy about football. Worth a listen

  16. Turkeybhoy

Genuine question – have you ever attended a game in the standing section?

    What does ‘harassment’ look like?

I have been on there twice and was a little disappointed in the general behaviour.

The tickets set out basic rules, which were not being adhered to.

I wasnt aware there was an agreement for pilice not to be deployed in this section. In my opinion, this practice must cease. There can’t be different rules.

The collective has some valid asks, though the waters are being muddied somewhat.

    From the last article,

Green Brigade will get back into line, – Celtic Board must see to it,

They are Pro Celtic, Anti Racist, Anti Fascist, Anti Homophobic, and most important in Scotland Anti Sectarian.

Sounds a bit like Celtic, (though people would have you believe otherwise) Bhoys against bigotry? etc, etc when Peter Lawwell decided to retire his legacy could have included the initiative of introducing safe rail seating long before anyone in Britain? The concept of passionate supporters has to be channelled to accomodate ultra groups at alot of big football clubs Barcelona, Real Madrid, Celtic and sterile don’t go.

The notion that Celtic don’t like or want the GB isn’t true, they are a money spinner (see the North Curve ) and its effectiveness we all know how much Celtic ‘value’ supporters money. Dialogue can only take place with two willing parties, I believe the ball is in Celtic’s court.

In any case tiny numbers in the Green Brigade, not to be confused with the much bigger groups of supporters that Celtic require to currently rehouse.

Respectfully I ask during Celts for Change did you attend games? Do you have suggestions on how to influence change that don’t involve in some way not buying tickets?.

    Thanks for your reply Dessybhoy.

During Celtsforchange I was in London and flying up n down to see Wayne Biggins-ihno et al.i attended all meetings from Shettleston to Govan to City Halls.

The one game there was an official boycott in 94 my flight was late resulting that I got to CP late the guy “clicking the counter” said hurry up i was 25 min late,he joked that as soon as I was in he could stop boycotting and come in.:-))

    Ways to influence Celtic

With me I know exactly what I spend each year.

This year 1 book,at times in recent years financing up to 4 books.

I think the boycott is the nuclear option, change is a gradually thing the pitchfork chat and mantras like sacktheboard need meat on them imo.

I have uncoupled° every part of my relationship with Celtic, all in have now is my game day.

    That won’t be interrupted.

Its not and never will be corporate thing

It is doing the same thing generations of our kin done before us.It is going to see Celtic.

°lookin at ones financial relationship with Celtic and uncoupling what is not needed.fully I have been doin it for years.i only attend CP now.

Dessy its bad timing. We have a title to win.we have 2 cups to get as far as possible,as I said yesterday,to me i am on the rope climbing to that title, get those victories, secure the title, eyes on the prize my friend.

We can win and change Dessy, its not an either or.

    Its Celtic.

    Hope your well

  19. The Originialsadiesbhoy,

I like it — cash is king.

Let’s also lobby our major sponsors on the fact our CEO is driving our support away from their products/services (CQN cabal with zero credibility excepted. ). I am sure this can be done in a clever way that would find empathy with our sponsors who can also bring the divisive CEO to his senses.

Boycotts can be effective – the Boards god is money.

The fans are always right — even if they are wrong.

    Keep the faith!

  20. I nearly stopped reading after the opening sentence of the statement. You can argue all you want about where our Club is and is going but to assert that the transfer window was disappointing is one leap of football and player knowledge no one posseses. Time will tell if it was disappointing or not but what more did they want. Permanent signings, sell Arne – am not sure how you manage anyone’s expectations if they can so quickly write off the recruitment that took place. I agree with the 3 key areas but again, the GB are not going to be reinstated without some from of concession on both sides. I have not heard one piece of concilliatory language on either side. Both are so pissed off with each other, no one is willing to make a move and come up with a pathway to peace.

  21. My Tickets are Boycotting.😥😥

Totally torn on this, and no time for the trumpets on here with their smug comments.Board allowing assholes.

Something has to be done, and I curse this Board,as I did the Kellys and Whites, for forcing this onto the fans. Not an Olive Branch, not a modicum of guilt, for their stupidity in hiring a Clown, derailing our chances of the League, losing another Trophy, and orchestrating another bungled fiasco of a window,no,nothing from this shower of incompetent bungling clowns. As for the coward with the moustache, just WTF is he?

The hero, who waited till Brendan had left the building before he dared put out his ridiculous rant.

What a pathetic shower they are. They do not deserve us.

    You’re kidding.

Brendan refused to accept his responsibilities, blamed everyone else , wound up the hard of thinking fans who absolved Brendan of any blame for anything. We’ll never know all the details of the “ activities “ Brendan was accused of , but it’s a nailed on certainty he won’t want them in the public domain.

  23. Kelvinbhoy,

Again not true. The Board have been approached many times.Even the Chairman offered a meeting, then ignored further discussions.

Nicholson and Hargreaves hate the GB.End of.

  24. Absolutely NO to a boycott. These players are running themselves into the ground for the jersey. , MON and staff are chasing on many fronts. Enjoy him while he is here!!!!!!

From what I’m reading – the majority don’t support the boycott and are firmly behind the team.

The disruptive minority are immature spoiled brats. Find a better way – ie don’t buy season tickets in the summer. Banners calling the board traitors has zero impact other than increasing the divide.

The board is having a nightmare and their day will come but the team should get support while that plays out.

  25. Maolmuire O Muirgheasa on

Rodgers scuttled their sorry raft and stayed afloat on the pure, buoyant spite of his own genius. When he finally played them at their own grubby game, the spineless bastards squealed, sold the family silver and replaced it with tin, and called it progress.

But Rodgers is a fox in a henhouse of pigeons. Hes the one walking away without a stain, as we as a club stumble from one shitshow to the next all the while the board and their mouth-breathing sycophants, the gullible, visionless hard of thinking cretins, are left sifting through the ashes of their own pathetic stupidity.

You people would be worthless, in a worthless economy.

  26. Nicholson and Hargreaves’s probably hate the GB’s behaviour. Constantly ignoring requests and bringing club name into disrepute.

Make the section all seated – let fans on the wait list purchase their season tickets. If you don’t like the rules set by Celtic SFA UEFA , find another outlet.

  27. The Battered Bunnet on

Celtic has shown time and again that it has zero tolerance of people who endanger or injure their staff.

In part that’s the simple consequence of the legal obligation they have to the health and safety of their employees.

In part it’s also because of the significant threats to employees that have occurred periodically over the past 15 years.

You threaten a part time, minimum wage steward, call your mates for hauners and s/he’s assaulted in the aftermath, you’re the problem, irrespective of whatever else is going on at the club.

If you excuse the behaviour, or turn a blind eye to it because you disdain the CEO or hate the Head of Security or some other extraneous reason, you’re also part of the problem.

It is entirely possible to call out wrongdoing by the hooded mob *and* incompetence and error by the executive *and* support the club.

In fact, that’s pretty much my experience of supporting Celtic through the 80s. It rather defined the majority of us, tbh.

But then, we didn’t have any ultra fans to tell us otherwise.

  28. EK Buoy,

And like all the rest of the Brendan haters, not an ounce of evidence to back up your tirade.

“We’ll never know all the details of what went on”

So,you base your case on hearsay?.That proves absolutely nothing.Come back with facts.

Facts like,eg,How successful a manager Brendan was.

How Brendan always made a profit in transfer dealings in each window.

How Brendan had,Kyogo,Kuhn, and Idah sold from his squad, and not replaced.

    You know,facts.

  29. Turkeybhoy on 4th February 2026 1:06 pm

You are at it again mate, saying things I write are not true. What are the GB, if they get face to face with the Board, going to say.

Maybe if they made that public then we could get a genuine insight into their thinking. They can say they are happy to talk and press for those talks but what they have failed to do (as have the Board) is confirm how they plan to resolve.

  30. Boycott season tickets on renewal day.

That there has been no season ticket boycott since 2012 means that the board have a long way to go before they can be considered to be worse than the sleekit fans.

“Mob mentality, also known as herd or crowd psychology, occurs when individuals in a group lose their self-awareness, personal accountability, and capacity for rational judgment, adopting the intense emotions and destructive behaviours of the collective. Fuelled by anonymity and social pressure, this phenomenon often leads to conformity and “groupthink,” where individuals act against their own morals to follow others”.

  32. The Collective have lost the plot .

Forget “the board” one man calls the shots. Dermot Desmond.

Right now I see a coaching staff and squad of players who deserve our support.

Preventing directors from entering the ground , boycotts and threats to disrupt the game against Stuggart are the plans from the playground of a primary school .

I am no fan of the way Desmond runs Celtic but these ideas are bonkers .

There’s ways and means to communicate discontent without causing chaos, that will only help our rivals .
