O’Neill stability contrasts with Aberdeen flux

288

If you are my generation, you will still wince at the prospect of a visit to Pittodrie.  Despite a calamitous 2025, Aberdeen managed to beat Celtic in May’s Scottish Cup Final, so even younger fans are entitled to be cautious ahead of tonight.

That sentiment will not be understood by Aberdeen fans.  After a resounding 6-2 win over Livingston 10 days ago, they crashed to earth at Rugby Park on Saturday, losing 3-0 to Kilmarnock, with club captain Graeme Shinnie shown a red card.  By any measure, they are a team in crisis.

Like Martin O’Neill, their boss Peter Leven has the role on an interim basis, his third such stint.  Unlike O’Neill, Leven does not expect to remain in charge until the end of the season.  His colourful director of football, Lutz Pfannenstiel, hopes to make a permanent appointment soon.  That state of flux contrasts with the stability Martin offers Celtic.

Last night’s win for St Mirren was welcome – to a point.  The result can only be enjoyed if Celtic take all three points tonight.  Martin O’Neill has set Celtic on an exceptional run of form, but no team in this league race can be confident of winning any game.

    Well…..

I have attended TWO Celtic games this season. I live in Canada, and I watch the games at our local CSC.

One of these 2 games was a 0-0 draw at home to Hibs. Our seats were near the front of the North Stand about level with the 18 yard box.

Before kick off several stewards were getting punched by people dressed in black, with face masks. They were punching through a line of stewards. Some of those with face masks got through the line of stewards and entered the ‘safe’ standing area. Others didn’t. So, dozens of masked folk came out of the ‘safe’ standing area, breached the line of stewards and pulled more of the face masked people.

In the days after the game, the GB were quoted as saying that their members had been ‘over policed’ and that it was inappropriate that their tickets were checked multiple times.

I am quite sure that the license for that area of the stadium is on a shoogly peg.

If so, there will no shortage of folk on this blog who will blame anyone but the guilty.

A selection of witnesses presenting ‘evidence’ of the sub-elite level of Brendan’s performance in the last 10 months of his time at Celtic prior to his resignation.

His team was running out of road. He left. It was the right decision and saved him from being dismissed on the grounds of performance. Whatever else was going on behind the scenes can only be inferred or guessed at, but clearly his relationship with his employers had deteriorated to a marked degree.

I don’t know how long this one’s going to run but for all of his poise, his polish and his professional reputation, he has a character flaw that prevents him from achieving his best. He was invincible in a league without competition, but regrettably vincible when the opposition tooled up.

A couple of years in Saudi will top up the treasury and the ego. Brendan’s not losing sleep over any of it, is he.

  3. The odd chant in the stadium, doesn’t affect the team, the lack of noise, colour and atmosphere does.Desmond is the root cause here,it’s him who should be the main target, try embarrassing him internationally, as he’s never here. The Cardboard Cutout, Desmond Jr,and McKay need emptied, for a multitude of reasons, football incompetence mainly. If somehow most of the protests can be kept outside the stadium, so be it,but I know we need maximum exposure to get the message across. I started this thread earlier, as we have managed to get ourselves into a better position now, thanks to Martin, his staff, and the team, at this stage of the season, if possible can we not focus on giving them all our support. I honestly don’t know what the solution is …….

    EK Buoy,

And like all the rest of the Brendan haters, not an ounce of evidence to back up your tirade.

    …..

    Tirades a bit strong.

They’re only proper rumours from non taxi drivers , which relate to money , they are too bad to write down. Even leaving them to one side , Brendan had a good 2 years ( he’s a good coach) but his ego and inability to be managed resulted in a 3rd season screwup where he absolved himself of blame , painted a target on the boards back.

Kyogo was dropped by Brendan and was eventually played on the right wing before being replaced by Idah.

Idah was sold after a chat with Brendan ( more to this than meets the eye) , Adam went into the chat wanting to stay.

Kuhn downed tools and was so bad was substituted in the SCup final.

The issue was not them being sold but being replaced Brendan was leading recruitment why did nothing happen over the summer , we’ve always had players come in , some good some bad but never nothing.

We can only assume Brendan was going for CL ready players ( one more push strategy to get past Bayern) or nothing.

Against Young Boys we scrapped through with a last minute OG after good play from Adam ( who Brendan agreed to sell) , prior to that we were 1-0 down to Leipzig near post header from a corner when they almost did the same 5 minutes after scoring , Atalanta battered us but couldn’t score , we got the luck / break …. I’m sure if the luck went against us then Brendan would have pushed a slightly different narrative, we need CL ready players to get past the groups

Either way he had a key role to play in this and screwed-up , ego driven I’m an elite manager and want elite players syndrome is my summary of where Brendan ended up,

Still there were good times , inevitably followed by bad , I didn’t hate Brendan but I’m glad he was pushed out the door.

  6. THE BATTERED BUNNET on 4TH FEBRUARY 2026 1:19 PM

Celtic has shown time and again that it has zero tolerance of people who endanger or injure their staff.

In part that’s the simple consequence of the legal obligation they have to the health and safety of their employees.

In part it’s also because of the significant threats to employees that have occurred periodically over the past 15 years.

You threaten a part time, minimum wage steward, call your mates for hauners and s/he’s assaulted in the aftermath, you’re the problem, irrespective of whatever else is going on at the club.

If you excuse the behaviour, or turn a blind eye to it because you disdain the CEO or hate the Head of Security or some other extraneous reason, you’re also part of the problem.

It is entirely possible to call out wrongdoing by the hooded mob *and* incompetence and error by the executive *and* support the club.

In fact, that’s pretty much my experience of supporting Celtic through the 80s. It rather defined the majority of us, tbh.

But then, we didn’t have any ultra fans to tell us otherwise.

    …..

    Excellent summary

I’ll be getting right behind the team from here to the end of the season. They’re playing for us we need to give everything we can for them to get this League title win over the line. I think if we are successful it will absolutely shatter Hearts and Sevco who have both invested so much this season when they saw our weakness and smelled blood.

An interesting take on Celtics finances.

    hhhmmm.

the “football finance analyst” experts doesnt seem to have a grasp on simple actual numbers.

paying tax only happens on profit in the financial year.

paying dividends is fixed at around 500k.

i said it already, i wouldnt be suprised if the half-year results have operating profits again, even with the not a penny more campaign. i dont know for certain but we will find out in a few days time.

  10. so i am talking to myself on this , but surely somebody else seen it.

before the game sunday a home and away never miss a match pal told me “its good to have the green brigade back” wink wink, know what i mean.

high in 444, looking straight down at the jungle bhoys area in 122, the sack the board chants, drums, and banners were loud and constant.

but what i noticed was, flags that are usually seen with the gb area, were in 122.

as was a green brigade logo banner, partially hidden, but could be glimpsed,

the papal flag with the popes 11 on it.

during the game several banners were unveiled directed at the board, and i found the latin motto one intriguing, can anyone find a link for it ? and translate it ? was it the st als motto ?

also the martin o neill, shaun maloney call and response was very clever. and participated in very well.

as to the boycott, i note on other sites individual posters saying ok for celtic to get beat by dundee so as to hasten the boards demise. dearie me, that is poor.

  11. Interesting to observe what appears to be a gradual decline in support for the Celtic Collective.

This is unfortunate as a number of their concerns are relevant and need addressed, but right now, IMHO, while 50k will stand and sing “sack the board” other initiatives don’t carry the support of the majority.

One change I would like is to see Fan Media back at press conferences.

Only my opinion, but ,I thought the Qs they asked about playing style / tactics resulted in better insight than the “who have you signed, who is injured?” msm stuff.

I am also fairly certain that if MoN didnt like the questions, he would deal with them in his own inimitable style

I hate it when fans want Celtic to get beat. Exceptional circumstances apply at the end of the season when we’ve won the League and lose a game that denies our city rivals entry into a Euro competition.

  14. CLASHCITYBHOY

I believe the issue is that the fan media are supporting the Collective position re ‘threatening staff and self policing’ , hence they’ve been put on the naughty step until they grow up.

  16. Why pay money to get into stadium to sing sack the board?

Is that not what dumb Hun gullibillys would do?

When there are 60,000 – INSIDE – the stadium singing sack the board.

The first thing that the board sitting in the directors box will say is:

“So at least the vaxxeens are working.”

And they’ll roll on the floor laughing their asses off.

  17. Aberdeen will inspect the pitch at Pittodrie before 17:00 GMT to assess whether their Scottish Premiership game against Celtic can go ahead on Wednesday evening.

Dundee’s Dens Park pitch is also the subject of concern before their Premiership game against Motherwell.

The area around one of the goals at Pittodrie is of particular concern before Aberdeen’s game with the reigning champions.

  18. I live in your head rent free so I must count.

If dim Tims count up to 49 their tongues go on fire.

That’s why NON dim Tim – KEVJUNGLE – is the only poster in Celtic Cyberspace who mentions the PLC’s £49 Old Firm ticket betrayal that dim Tims like you give the same corrupt PLC £1,000+ per season to thank the corrupt PLC for maintaining a Mony Pythons flying Circus level of Integrity and Ethics.

The last thing Aberdeen want right now is a game against Celtic.

  23. Please be aware Aberdeen FC contacted the SPFL earlier this afternoon to arrange a pitch inspection ahead of this evening’s William Hill Premiership game between Aberdeen and Celtic.

Prolonged rain over the last few weeks has made the pitch heavy. The groundstaff have been working tirelessly to get it ready but there is an area of the surface at the Merkland end that is causing concern.

A referee will inspect the pitch at 4.00pm and we will update supporters as soon as a decision has been made.

  24. lets all do the huddle on

surely they can just release some of their sheeps to roll about the pitch for an hour. their fleecy coats will sook up the puddles like a sponge

  25. just a thought, but maybe a postponment would be better for us than risking the points on a freakish pitch.
