O’NEILL STRIKER MOVE SCUPPERED

MARTIN O’NEILL’S hopes of signing West Ham striker Callum Wilson look like being scuppered.

The champions have been linked with the 33-year-old frontman who is on the brink of being released by the London club.

However, it looks as though Wilson could be lured to the Middle East with Saudi club Al-Shabab ready to make a move, according to reports across the border.

STAND-IN STRIKER…Daizen Maeda in action in Celtic’s 1-0 midweek win over Falkirk.

O’Neill is searching for much-needed firepower with Republic of Ireland’s Johnny Kenny and summer recruit Shin Yamada the interim manager’s only recognised attack leaders with Kelechi Iheanacho fighting back to fitness after missing the last seven games with hamstring problems.

Daizen Maeda has been utilised in the No.9 position in the Irishman’s last two outings, the wins over Dundee United (4-0) and Falkirk (1-0).

O’Neill also suffered a setback when former fans’ favourite Kyogo Furuhashi rejected a loan return to remain at Championship outfit Birmingham City.

Now it looks as though the opportunity of enticing Wilson to Parkhead will be lost with Al-Shabab poised to make the player a big-money offer which would take the nine times-capped Englishman out of the Hoops’ price range.
