O’Neills’ achievements

888

Delighted for Martin O’Neill on taking Ireland into the last 16 of the Euros. Since his salad days ended at Celtic, Martin’s had more downs than ups as a manager. I felt the game had moved on from him, even during his five years at Celtic, the game tactically moved away from him, but he’s one of a number of managers of small nations who have overachieved.

I’m not buying Roy Keane’s tears, though. Reaching the last 16 of the Euros is a great achievement, but he disparaged Mick McCarthy’s achievement with Ireland in going out of the 2002 World Cup in the last 16 to Spain on penalties.  Maybe it’s time for some humility from Roy.

If anything, Michael O’Neill’s achievements with the north has been even greater. Michael was mentioned as a possible Celtic manager before Brendan’s appointment, but the point was made to me, whatever he achieved in qualifying, he could be embarrassed in all three Euros games. Now he needs to beat Wales for a place in the quarter finals.

The group stages have been a delight. Some big tactical lessons for underdogs, and for teams who face 10 men behind the ball every week. If you don’t make defensive mistakes you can win any game, possession and territorial advantage is a mirage of influence.

Am I the only one perplexed by the MON arguments on here, mainly backed by innacuracies about playing the long ball game and such nonsense. The lucky manager tag is a new one on me though, luck didn’t come into it when he managed to convince Bobby Petta he was Johan cruyff ,albeit for one game.

  5. There is no doubt MON is/was a quality manager but he was able to achieve things with a better squad of players. His record at Celtic would have been much better but for one thing – CHEATING.

  8. For those laughing about the age of Krancjar and the stupidity of Barton, maybe we should remember how we laughed about the age of Kenny Miller in the run up to the semi final.

  18. Sevco much like their liquidated predecessors aren’t a normal football club, their support won’t allow it, and the indecent haste to get to where the original club were cheating at the top, has instantly doomed them to fail. They could even do it in world record time.

Recruiting players with presumably high wages, puffing the squad with non league, on the beg, steal and borrow when you have no capital, no bank facility, no sales revenue, is a dire policy even for the contemptible new club, filled with failed directors.

A new club, should behave like a new club and should have built from the training ground they are desperate to rename and wipe away the stain, but no just the same mistakes their fathers bore.

Nothing other than each following years season tickets , still steeped in bigotry now with a perceived grievance, they could go tits north in two seasons. There are few players in the frenetic SPL doing well whilst over 30 and the latest recruit was written off as a nearly man almost a decade ago, when he was offered to us.

Celtic fans should be purring over the new rival signing ( and singing ) policy, it’ll lead to the new downfall, watch out you could miss journeys quick ending.

Brendan had all the players and coaches in on Sunday, laying down the law. Dress codes, etiquette, representing the club and supporters properly. He said he will decide who comes in and who goes. If you are not happy with money you are paid.come and see me,you may get an increase or a decrease. A PowerPoint presentation on his ideas to move the club forward,he blew the roof off the place, players have given him instant respect. He said he is an old fashioned, hands on manager and the buck stops with him.

    A Brian Clough story.

BC entered the Forest dressing room on the day of a league decider to find Peter Shilton lying with his suit on on the masseur’s bench looking totally depressed.

PS explain he had £10,000 gambling debts. BC thought for a moment then said ‘don’t worry lad we’ll sort it out. Ten minutes later BC appears with a cheque for 10k and hands it to Shilton.

Shilton plays a blinder, Forest win the league, and everyone is celebrating in the dressing room.

BC goes up to Shilton, puts his a around him and says ‘well done lad. Now give me the f@@king cheque back’.
