O’Neill’s Celtic’s GOAT claim and persisting core attributes

925

If Shane Duffy wanted to whet the appetite of supporters after securing his loan move to Celtic, scoring a 93rd minute equaliser for Ireland in their Nations Cup game in Bulgaria last night was the way to achieve it.  Those who know the player told us he was a commanding presence and the manner in which he powered home his header from a corner kick backed this up.

When you watch how teams defend set-pieces against Celtic, you will note their key defensive resources concentrate on Christopher Jullien.  He also appears to be the man other Celtic players try to provide space for, by stopping opponents getting a block on him.

Jullien is a better set-piece target than we have had in many years, but this makes us predictable to defend against.  Duffy will make Celtic significantly less easy to stop on these occasions.

If there was a Greatest Set-Piece Team of All Time table, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic would sit top.  Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Johan Mjallby and John Hartson were five absolute mountains.  Defenders seldom knew who to cover.  As a consequence, Henrik Larsson did as much damage in the air as any of them.

Football has changed greatly in the years since that team rose to prominence, it was a thing of its time, but defending and attacking at set-pieces requires the same core attributes.

McGeady scored 5 goals for the Republic. Tommy Coyne scored 6.

Paul talks about set pieces. This team is probably the worst ever at converting corners. Julien has improved it but there were stats on here that we only scored about 1% of corners

Our deliveries are atrocious. Shane Duffy hasn’t a chance of scoring if Celtic can’t beat the first man or over hit corners as often as we do.

    Correct.

I did once ask two of his team mates about it. They were a bit bemused by it as they didn’t know him to be right wing, or even particularly political.

Though he and Ronnie Simpson did share the accolade of both having been on half wages at Celtic because they were both classed as part timers, Jim Craig because he was a student and Ronnie Simpson because he had another job as a fuel salesman or something.

Just as well it was then and not now. Many of our supporters seem very intolerant nowadays. I feel some would gladly bin him for his political beliefs.

  11. im with my mate delaneys dunky, come on the scots, i digress😎remember my uncle packy, sadly now in a better place, taking me to a hibs walk in coatbridge, i would probably have been about 10 years old, so thats 57 years ago, uncle packy i said why is it not called the celtic walk with all the celtic scarves and tammies everywhere, he just laughed..H.H.

  12. Patriotism is very, very low in the list of views and feeling that make up whatever is the sum of my parts. In fact, `very, very low` is actually higher than it sits.

If the social and political aspects of Scotland matched the majestic beauty, this would be some country.

Tonight’s match against Israel is not important in itself, but it is still an interesting game. A guide for instance as to how well Scotland might do in the knockout game next month against the same opposition at the same venue. The number of Celtic players on the field in total. The number of Scotland players who either play for Celtic, played for Celtic or, and here’s the thing, could have played for Celtic in other circumstances. And, as with Shane Duffy, the amount of game time our players get in a season when they have not played a whole lot of club football, in part due to our club in effect being punished solely as the result of the actions of one of our players, something that has never been fully explained. In short a useful exercise.

The Reccy and and adjoining pitches are a regular feature of my son’s husky walks. Pity is, it would never cross his 21st century mind to kick a football round them.

Here and elsewhere. Nothing wrong with revisionism in itself, though I have never bought into attempts by German historians re Nazis/Germany, nor the attempt by, mentioned previously, the likes of Jan T Gross to extrapolate from an atrocity in 1941. Ireland 1643 could throw up some horrific instances, but I would not judge the Catholic population in Ireland based on those alone. Did Sinn Fein get it wrong in 1918-19? could be worth re-examining. Did Big Jock get it wrong in 1970, and would Leeds United have beaten Feyonoord had they reached the final?

I see your comments about the rising numbers and potential for another lockdown. I assume what you mean by lockdown is going back to the way it was in March/April in Scotland; work from home, non essential travel ban, schools, resturants and pubs closed etc.? There’s a similar scenario here in Ireland but while some in the NPHET, our public health advisory body, are suggesting that this might happen here there’s a difference this time. The numbers being tested is north of 26,000 each week but the positive rate is 1% and the death rate has gone from dozens each day to 6 in the whole month of August. Hospitalizations are also significantly down and steady. The other two main points this time round are there’s no public appetite for a complete lockdown as before, people are just sick of it; not that it means people will ignore public health advice to socially distance, wash hands wear a mask etc. More importantly than that there are now a lot of doctors saying the general physical and mental health and well-being outweighs any more blanketed lockdown. I heard a Geriatrian say he hears people say to him each day this is no life I don’t want to live if this is all there is. We have to live with Covid but also live our lives.

  20. I see Leicester have signed Timothy Castagne the full back that BR wanted in the winter transfer window in 2019. Celtic offered £8 mill. Atalanta wanted £12 mill. and now BR has paid £18mil. Had we bought at 12 Mil there may have been a nice profit in it following BR to Leicester but then again BR would probably still be here had we bought him and others, but then again, again :)) maybe not! por cierto.

  21. Be in no doubt – Celtic is still a club “open to all”. The current custodians & officers of the club will see to that, as will those who come after.

The problem of intolerance lies not within the club, but in the minds of a minority of our support – co-incidentally, those who cost us hundreds of thousands of Euros in fines, and jeopardise our participation in European competition. Can really be called supporters? Fair weather fans with their own agenda, seems more appropriate.

Not sure about the spelling but yer spot on with the sentiment.

  23. On the dearth of goals from corners topic, I think that the ratio these days is very low indeed in all leagues.

Changed days. Glen Gibbons covered a Celtic game when MON was manager and lamented the fact that the team hadn’t score from open play in two games. We still won those games.
