Only one viable club in the Scottish game

152

An angry meltdown by Hibernian, many of their fans and lots of independent (cough) observers that the SPFL did not allocate them 50% of Sunday’s League Cup Final tickets all seems a bit demeaning to the League this morning.  500 unsold tickets were returned, it is unclear if it will be possible to sell them to Celtic fans while maintaining crowd segregation.

Can we once and for all agree that Celtic are the lifeblood of Scottish football?  They are the team who compete in and win most finals, they are followed by more fans than anyone else, they bring the game more money in ticket sales, as well as TV and commercial deals than anyone. They also keep Scottish journalism in business.

Celtic are run well.  They live within their means and pay their bills.  They do not duck and dive in the courts over contractual disputes, when they commit to something, it happens.  They do not need to over-promise on ticket sales, even when things go wrong, they meet contractual obligations and move on.

God love St Johnstone, who have achieved enormously well as the second most successful Scottish team over the last decade (three times more trophies than anyone else), but there is only one viable club in the modern Scottish game, everyone else, every last one of them, is making up the numbers.

This is not an endorsement that we will easily beat Ross County tonight, or win on Sunday.  It’s football, even Celtic cannot win them all.  Aberdeen are right to cut their stadium ambitions, Hibs have no choice but to send unsold tickets back, Newco have so little wriggle room you see what they are always at court.  Celtic are on their own, the rest live of our existence.

  1. Is that depiction of commercial and sporting co-dependence why our elders and betters believe that the pinncacle of our Euro ambitions lies in the reinvented Intertoto Cup – for couldabeens and once-weres?

I’ll prob be first to say this and mibby be shot down for it…GVB seems to have transitioned into their fitba operations quite smoothly – moreso than I thought, hoped or wanted.

But they, too, have injury issues and I hope the winter fixtures and Jan wantaways, sees them compounded.

The rules for the Film Club game are that you can add, omit or change just a small section of the film title ( I restricted it to one letter, addded , omitted or chamged, but they are not so strict)

BUT…. the main idea is that you end up with quite a different film, so the changes still have to mean something- e.g.

Aberdeeen downsizing a future stadium capacity is fine, but it doesnt say anything about “ambition”.

they will cut their cloth to suit, like saint mirren did, (6000) as we dont need the cost burden of empty seats (like killie or well).

The vaccination programme give us the best chance of normality and I am fully onboard with it.

However all the vaccines you listed took years to develop, in some cases decade’s, so I can absolutely understand apprehension.

I wonder why you missed out Smallpox ? To date, it is the only disease completely eliminated by vaccination.

i think it is more having a dig at those who try to put us down at every opportunity, especially in light of the hibs cup final ticket farce when everyone took a shot at us when we were originally given more tickets than hibs, and the media whipped everyone into a frenzy about it

the egg they now have on their faces is just being rubbed in a bit my P67s article

i dont have a problem with that

  10. The article just confirms what some have believed for some time. Surely one club so financially powerful would have things like FFP and Referring the way they wanted it and not at the whim of a financially bankrupt one! por cierto

  11. the vaccine debate on Covid has reminded me of a debate here in Ireland around HPV vaccines for 2nd year (i think) girls.

This was to vaccinate against the virus which can cause cervical cancer.

I was of the opinion that my daughter would get it as a matter of course. Then the Facebook mothers’ groups got involved; claiming major side affects, Socialist state etc.

After a conversation with another mother, my wife decided our daughter should not get the jag (she had everything else since a baby).

Our daughter got a bit upset at the confused message so i told her that she would be getting it and her mother would come around once she started thinking for herself and looked at real data. I would sign the form anyway if it came to that. . Child happy, father happy, mother did as predicted and changed her mind and was happy.

A smaller example of what is happening now but similar behaviours in our house as we see globally now.

PS I was not necessarily right or showing good behaviour!

  12. Not sure where we are with the Jan recruitment process — J League x 3 good to go?

Just a case that we need to work the B team / youth angle as hard as the first team squad.

The fact that none of the B Team strikers look to be First Team ready would suggest a gap that needs filled.

A gap that has needed to be filled for a number of years.

Either we can’t spot talent at an early age or we can’t the talent that we do spot.

And then you have the luck element — KD out injured just when we need him most.

It is exactly the same problem as trying to find first-team ready strikers or any other position. The large clubs around the World hoover up these youngsters, already we have lost at least 2 to Bayern Munich, and they have them all within their squads, quickly discarded when they have spotted a first-team ready player in the open market, then, they sell these youngsters on at a profit or to cover the cost of their coaching over the years they were at the club, por cierto..

Too many people are not good at making decisions.

Every voice is given the same amount of emphasis without looking at the background or detail of the opinion.

Plus the 26 counties does not come across as very progressive — vaccines as socialst ?!? — agrarian / trading society that has never had a majority industrialised working class and it shows with the current economic focus on tax avoidance / tax gymnastics.

Natland — if it ever happens — would steer a course similar to your own and to me that would be a backward step.

  19. Scotland’s a footballing backwater. Remaining ahead of the unambituous and a bawhair ahead of the perennially cheating mob from Govan is an accolade that doesn;t rate too highly in my books.

Not sure I know what’s happened to pushing ahead into being the very best European club we can be.

Oh yeah, I do actually. That outcome would scupper the ‘Old Firm’ business model we so highly rely on.

Ah well. Maybe one day we’ll realise we are more than a cash cow feeding off the support.

There have been issues with our youth system for the past 10 years at least.

Our player recruitment and development has been very patchy.

Too many players seem to leave due to fall outs and personality clashes — DMcG comes to mind / back in the day.

Then we have the good players we do develop leaving for abroad / bigger clubs — fad or local failings?

I blame the High School Musical set up at St N’s — inward looking micro community / glee club that does not focus on individual improvement or performance just a case of fitting in and being one of the gang.

It attracts too many apprentice WAGS and to them it is like shooting fish in a barrel.

It seems to have generated a matriarchal society where the youth players get used to getting what they are given — not really a good environment for developing winners.

Back in the day Jr got all the info / gossip on the youth squad from a distant relative.

She could give him chapter and verse on who was in and who was out within the group.

Football ability came second to social status / standing in the world she was then a big part of.

    Not good.

  23. Serious question — who is the best U20 / U21 striker in the SPL / SPL youths?

Are they playing SPL football and how much would they cost?

And why shouldn’t we buy him / her / it in Jan.

Who is the best U20 / 21 striker in Ireland / Norway / Iceland?

    Things are getting desperate.

  24. Next time let’s make the respective finalists pay upfront for the tickets, no refunds. We’ll see how many Hibs want then.
