Only one viable club in the Scottish game

152

An angry meltdown by Hibernian, many of their fans and lots of independent (cough) observers that the SPFL did not allocate them 50% of Sunday’s League Cup Final tickets all seems a bit demeaning to the League this morning.  500 unsold tickets were returned, it is unclear if it will be possible to sell them to Celtic fans while maintaining crowd segregation.

Can we once and for all agree that Celtic are the lifeblood of Scottish football?  They are the team who compete in and win most finals, they are followed by more fans than anyone else, they bring the game more money in ticket sales, as well as TV and commercial deals than anyone. They also keep Scottish journalism in business.

Celtic are run well.  They live within their means and pay their bills.  They do not duck and dive in the courts over contractual disputes, when they commit to something, it happens.  They do not need to over-promise on ticket sales, even when things go wrong, they meet contractual obligations and move on.

God love St Johnstone, who have achieved enormously well as the second most successful Scottish team over the last decade (three times more trophies than anyone else), but there is only one viable club in the modern Scottish game, everyone else, every last one of them, is making up the numbers.

This is not an endorsement that we will easily beat Ross County tonight, or win on Sunday.  It’s football, even Celtic cannot win them all.  Aberdeen are right to cut their stadium ambitions, Hibs have no choice but to send unsold tickets back, Newco have so little wriggle room you see what they are always at court.  Celtic are on their own, the rest live of our existence.

  1. Only one viable club . . . You would never know. The SFA and the SPL certainly don’t think so. We are the necessary but hated support act for the most successful and dignified club in world football.

With Dave King coming back, the blazers will be falling over themselves to outstaunch each other.

    Thanks for your replies.

I take on board all you say & bow to your greater knowledge where I have missed out.

Regarding the time taken to develop previous vaccines, you are of course right, however it was an education to watch Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert deliver this year’s Dimbleby Lecture on BBC. She explains why they were able to ‘get there’ so quickly on Covid and how the building-blocks are there, in place, for future vaccines

  3. Paul, of course all you say is true, but to read some of the stuff on here, the best Celtic blog bar none, it appears that we are run by a bunch of incompetent spivs, with the wrong politics, who look out & protect the Ibrox business in fear of another liquidation event. Yes mistakes are made – we do the wrong things but for the right reasons – those reasons are simple and guided by this sentence – “Is it in the best interests of Celtic?”

We don’t need to ensure the existence of an Ibrox entity – the size of their constituency will always do that, in one form, or, another.

We are the lifeblood of the game here in Scotland, but that never would, or, could be acknowledged by those in power & in the media, such is the make-up of Scottish society.

” You can’t please all of the supporters all of the time” Celtic please the overwhelming majority most of the time. A majority too grown-up to be ‘throwing their toys out of the pram’ whenever it suits.

We have a ‘little local difficulty’ at this moment in time. We will see it off – it’s no more than stiff breeze in an egg cup.

500 tickets @£40 is £20k missing from the pot, that’s a sore one and hope the league brings it up the next time the smsm get on their high 🐎🐎🐎

    —————-

Could be more than that or nothing at all as the extra allocation was from the SFA/corpy seats.

If they were SFA freebies to club officials etc then its an opportunity lost but if the tickets are from expensive corporate seats then it’s a big loss

  5. Paul writes a header praising our club, and telling truths, maybe hated by others in our game, but nevertheless true, and gets a good few negative feedbacks.

Sad to see Paul lower his standards today.

Today’s leader is breathtaking in its arrogance towards other SPFL clubs, and the lack of humility in tone.

they are no friends of ours

  12. So, who plays CF tonight in the absence of all our goalscorers, If James Forrest is rested and MJ too- we have only Abada left as a front 3 player. Many of us were all calling for him to get the CF place last time but, through all permutations he remained on the wing, right or left, so it does not look as though Ange agrees with that.

Rogic and Turnbull tried hard to flood the number 9 spot but neither of them was playing on the shoulder of the defence

If anGe did give in to the Abada call, we could have a front 3 of Juranovic Abada and Montgomery but, if he perseveres with teh false 9 option I suspect we’ll see:-

    Hart

    Ralston CCV Starfelt Taylor

    McGregor Bitton Rogiv

    Juranovic Turnbull Abada

I can see either Joey Dawson or Owen Moffat making it from the training squad to the bench this time because of our additional injuries. Owen Moffat is the better player but Joey Dawson has the height which we might need agaisnt a big defence. Neither are ready for regulas r top team games yetbut we are in a tricky spell just now. I am sure we can score- just need to keep a tight defence to win tonight I reckon

  13. With no specialist striker tonight, we have to shoot more from the edge of the box. We are a bit timid in this respect at the moment.

I see Louis Hamilton is still taking the knee…..

  17. What about a 3-7 formation tonight?.

CCV, Starfelt & Nir at the back and Ralston, Jura, Turnbull, Calmac, Rogic, Johnston & Taylor swarming, winning the ball back quickly & breaking in turn when the opportunity presents? They can all be ‘false nines’, or, false sevens’, or ‘false elevens’ when it suits.

Crazy? Maybe, but so is having every striker out injured.

  18. So what we all knew was bound to happen, that Hibs asking for a 50/50 split of tickets was just plain ridiculous.

Even more so, the fact that Hibs were given a further 2,000 tickets over their initial allocation of 17,500 beggars belief.

Hibs went public in their demands for tickets, and got extra tickets.

Our club kept silent, even though they knew that thousand’s of ST Holders who were at the Semi Final would miss out on the final.

How many tickets have Hibs demanded for their next visit to Glasgow on the 29th December ?

Our club should be all over this, highlighting the stupidity in the cup final allocation.

Can’t argue with your facts Pablo.

And these take care of 95% of my gut response to your article.

Fair call made by others though about the old hubris? ….

… but for me that is only worth 5%

As for growing Scottish football collectively?

    Hhmm.

3 minutes on Google reveals the following about record home attendances vs current stadium capacity (or proposed in Aberdeen’s case)

    Hibs – 65,860 / 20,421

    Hearts – 53,396 / 19,852

    Aberdeen – 45,061 / 17,000

    Celtic – 83,500 / 60,411

There is no growth agenda in Scottish football.

Not from the SFA or the “big” clubs.

Consider the facts if you will ….

At some point in history, 40k, 50k and 60k human beings felt sufficiently connected to go see Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs respectively at their current locations.

Personally, I think Cormack is wrong on the proposed capacity of the new stadium.

    But …

    (a) it’s not my money AND

    (b) I don’t actually care

What I DO care about is this ….

If you want to think small and be small?

    Go right ahead.

Just don’t play the old “We’re big” card the next time there is a game at Hampdump against Celtic.

    You’re small. By choice.

  23. CALLLMEGERRY @ 2:26

    —-

Don’t agree with you, however respect that it’s your opinion.

When Rangers started to disintegrate in 2012, no one knew what lay immediately in store for Scottish football. Together the ‘big two’ account for 80% of the game in Scotland, in all aspects.

No one knew what would happen if half of that 80% disappeared – how could the top-flight survive on 60%? What would happen to TV deals? What about the loss of the ‘blue pound’ that their travelling fans bring?

One thing all clubs could bank on at that time was the strength of Celtic, its financial probity & decency was never in doubt. Celtic done the right thing by staying aloof from the sh** storm. We could have ‘pushed a few buttons’ on certain things, but that risked being drawn into an ‘Old Firm’ scenario. This was carnage not of our making. We let them get on with it and the consequential damage that befell Rangers FC was greater than anyone associated with the game in Scotland could ever have imagined.

So what’s wrong with standing up and saying that we are the “lifeblood” – you can be certain that no one else will.

The “55” has seemingly cleansed history and affected memories, not only at Ibrox, but in the media and everywhere outside Celtic Park in Scotland.

    I applaud Paul’s guts!

  24. smaller stadiums, in theory less tickets for celtic fans.

never ever ever understood the business rational for having empty seats to appease home supporters not wanting moved, while literally thousands more celtic supporters would have attended,

particulalry those games we won leagues at.
