Opportunistic double standards are what we do best in Scotland

106

There remains a chance Raith Rovers will be promoted to the Premiership in the summer.  They are one of four clubs within a three-point gap fighting for the playoff place, although Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle and Inverness are each more likely to get there.

Raith’s prospects would be better still if they had not made such a botched attempt to improve their options at striker last month.  Instead of adding momentum, they sucked whatever enthusiasm the club had straight out of Kirkcaldy, losing sponsors, the women’s team, support staff and around £150k payoff to David Goodwillie.

Previously, football clubs, commentators and even the First Minister had blurred guidelines when it came to serious offenders in the game.  Goodwillie was employed without fuss after two convictions for assault.  A rape charge did not move the dial either (he is not alone in this respect).  Oldco Rangers manager, Ally McCoist, bid to sign him seven times in the months after charges were dropped, before he left Dundee United for Blackburn Rovers.

In 2017, he was ruled by a judge in a civil case to have raped his victim.  This was too much for then-employer, Plymouth Argyle, who kicked him out.  He declared bankruptcy, which meant the compensation he was ordered to pay went unmet.  Unable to gain employment in England, he found a landing place back in Scotland, at Clyde, with little fuss from our politicians, only the fans seemed interested, some of whom have never returned.

Author and Raith shirt sponsor, Val McDermid, two club directors and many of their non-salaried staff withdrew support when the club announced Goodwillie’s signature.  These actions were a beacon for those on the lookout for a virtual signalling opportunity.  Scottish football was soon getting advice on what had been going on without comment for five years, from those previously untroubled by exactly the same thing happening at Clyde.  Opportunistic double standards are what we do best in Scotland.

Since the turn of the year Raith have drawn five, lost only to Premiership-bound Arbroath (sigh) and beaten only Junior club, Banks O’Dee, in the previous round of the Scottish Cup.  They are a side on their knees who will be bereft of the fight we witnessed to such devastating effect in 1994.  So the unthinkable cannot happen, right?  Hmmm.

VMcD would appear to be a high productivity writer of penny dreadful level crime fiction.

She seems to have a production line set up to throw out book after book based on a limited number of characters and an ever expanding spectrum of gratuitous violence.

Some would call it torture porn and I am struggling to disagree.

Most of this violence including the “Pulp Fiction” inspired tome of 1995 — where the protagonist definitely gets medieval on quite a few (male) asses — would appear to cover all the bases up to and including extremely graphic portrayals of hyper stylised torture.

Given her use of male victims and the detail in which she describes their treatment at the hands of abusers I fear that the words she leaves on the page open her to the charge of misandry and as far as I know she has not done anything / enough to address this accusation.

She earns a very good living from this questionable enterprise which makes her claim to be a radical feminist and socialist somewhat hollow — getting Old Monkey Glands to publish the books should be the giveaway to her profits before principles business strategy.

DG can be criticised / castigated / denigrated for a lot of things he has done — erse / cheapshot merchant of the highest order — but VMcD should not be the person leading the charge against him.

  2. This is not a political post. This is an incredulous post.

    My dilemma –

I am on the home cup tie debit scheme. ergo My ticket for Raith Rovers game was debited some weeks ago.

    It has been paid for.

Am I allowed to attend and if I do does that mean I am condoning bad behaviours of others.

Ansers on a voting ballot please.

All good with us bud, he was staying with us on Wednesday so went through the full raft of emotions during the Don’s game on board the roller coaster that is The Celtic. Nearly 5o years separate us but I seen myself in him and his love of the team.

He has a lifetime of ups and down ahead of him.

Wouldn’t swap it for anything CSC

  9. An Tearmann. Our club Steelstown Brian Ógs are now all Ireland intermediate football Champions.

The youngest club (49 years old) and the first team from County Derry to win it also. If you get a chance you should try and listen to our captains Neil Forresters speech in Croke Park after receiving the cup.

  10. Did anyone see that tackle on the Celtic Ghirl last night.Dear God.Similar to Roofed against that goalkeeper, only lower down.Horrendous.Not even a yellow. If you have not seen it,its on News now Celtic.

So you’re OK with funding Goodwillie’s pay off.

    How very principled of you.

    ……………….

    Very poor comment from you.

  12. I posted some time ago that football should have been far more involved in the #metoo movement than in BLM or poppy wearing.

(please note, I’m not equating the respective merits of these latter two, just that the clamour for and opposition to is similar)

However, for reasons unknown, football chose to remain silent.

  13. ERNIE LYNCH on 11TH FEBRUARY 2022 12:40 PM

Will Raith Rovers be using their share of the gate money to pay up Goodwillie’s contract?

And if so does that mean any fans attending are in line for a sherricking from Big Val and her pals?

    …………….

The above MUST be one of the most STUPIDEST Posts that I have ever read on here.

Going by the above so called ” LOGIC”, does that mean that Celtic supporters who attended games v HIbs in the 1980’s, were GUILTY of FUNDING George Bests drinking habits ?

Likewise, were Celtic supporters GUILTY of funding Gazzas Drink and Drug habits when he played for the Huns ?

Again, were Celtic supporters GUILTY of funding Graham Roberts ” GAMBLING” habit, when he played for the Huns by buying a Ticket for a Celtic v Huns game ?

Were Celtic supporters also GUILTY of Funding Frank MacGarveys ” Alleged” Gambling habit, by buying a Ticket for any Celtic game that he was involved in…or any Celtic v St Mirren game, when Frank played for the Saints ?

This LIST could be ENDLESS….and yet…I do NOT feel GUILTY !

  18. IF…and its a BIG IF…Nicola Sturgeon had KNOWN, or had been advised of Goodwillies previous involvement with Clyde,

    ###

    Hardly a big IF.

John Mason ( I assume you know who he is) had plenty to say about it when Goodwillie signed for Clyde. He even boycotted Clyde. Only for a couple of games mind but well he was only going to support his team, and had done his bit of virtue signalling, so that’s all fine.

    It was in the tabloids.

    Surely you must remember that?

And if an SNP MSP had managed to get a story in the tabloids Sturgeon would have known about it.

  19. On reflection result on Wednesday may be a blessing in disguise

First half in cruise control without reaching heights of previous games

Second was slightly worrying Aberdeen made some changes upped their game and we struggled

Legitimate reasons for this a heavy schedule new signings bedding in and players selected

However showed determination and resolve to obtain 3 pts

The blessing hopefully is that a result like this should unite the group and also prove to our new Bhoys that they have to be on their A game every match

Overall in a great place and really enjoying the games

    IN ANGE WE TRUST HH

Living in Turkey puts you at something of a disadvantage when it comes to assessing public awareness of such things here in Scotland.

But yes Sturgeon would have known about Goodwillie signing for Clyde as one of he fellow SNP MSPs made much of it at the time.

  21. SECOND CHANCES

Don’t do second chances. People have to own up and suffer the consequences of their actions.

Give a crocodile a second chance to bite, no, didn’t think so.

Age groups, boys and girls, thro to senior level, the ladies it was who won the all Ireland Cup and it brought a lot of investment in too, another floodlit training pitch means they can cope well, its a community hub.

aye, sorry. You do need to show vax status (or PCR or recovery). Note: if not boosted, the 2nd dose can’t be more than 270 days ago

need a Passenger Locator Form too (they rarely ask and you can do it on your phone if you forget before flying). Can only be done max 3 days before flight

  27. A wee bit of politics

I see Liz truss made an absolute arse out of talks with the Russian Bear. This incredibly credible:-

Things behind the scenes were even worse, according to @ElenaChernenko.

Lavrov said, “Do you recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh oblasts?”

Truss said the UK would “never” do so – before the ambassador told her they’re not in Ukraine

Just to be clear- Rostov and Voronezh are in Russia.

Aneurin Bevan once pleaded not to send a Foreign Secretary “naked into the conference chamber”

But sending one “brainless into that chamber” seems to trump that.
