Organisational indiscipline remains a concern

949

Yesterday’s win at Fir Park was huge for Celtic’s season but we should caution against talk of a corner being turned.  The team possessed the resilience (and Irish magician) to come from behind and beat the team who were second in the league, but we have been here before.

The Motherwell goal will cause Neil Lennon particular concern.  After losing a goal to an early corner kick against Rennes on Thursday, it seems impossible to believe that the team switched off at another corner kick, but only Beram Kayal was alert to the threat of Motherwell taking a short corner, and he was already covering a threat.

Organisational discipline is as important as having better players to the outcome of many football games.

bit of (very) sharpish motoring should permit to see 2nd half at Perth on way down the road (not recomm on THAT death-trap A9)

  2. Sitting reading phils book again lol the Dallas article is unreal and the old Paul brennan gets a mention in his column.

I’m sure Paul said he had more stuff regarding SFA a couple of Saturdays ago I canny wait for that lads..

  3. I found the young ins formation tonight interesting.

I may be wrong but it appeared to all intents and purposes to be a

3-6-1 in attack and a 5-4-1 when defending.

I attack it appeared to me that the back 3 opened out leavin one Central Defender sitting in a sort of sweeper role while the 2 other CH defenders took up almost, but not quite a LB and RB position. One of the midfielders dropped into a sitting mid role (no 8 who looked like McGeady). We had a left and right sided players who could bomb up and down the wings as well as coming back to make a 5 when defensive duties required, sometimes dependant on play only 1 would come back to make a 4 if defensive duties were required on his side of field.

It appeared we also had a Central midfielder who sat in behind our attacker a sort of inside right and inside left who would both overlap and play off the left and right sided mids

I watched this carefully in the second half.

I like the idea as it offers so many attacking options while at the same time shouts down space quickly when defending.

    Interesting. Very interesting.

  4. Having watched the Celtic young guns, I think great credit must go to the coaching staff. These boys look like they could make it.

    McGeouch

    George

    Herron

    Watt

and the Twardziks could all slot into our teams eventually

I’ve been impressed by these kids and think this should be the future. We might get more out of some of those guys than some members of the first team.

Getting these boys into the first team should be our priority in the next few years. Some are getting a taste right now but they need to develop and become then new conveyor belt for our team.

I’d hang on to these kids and move them into the first team squad within the year or give one or two a loan to a first division or SPL side.

    Pleased with their showings.

MWD – during WGS time at the club it was reported that he wanted the reserves or youth teams to play the same formation as the first team, for obvious reasons. If you’re right, then it would be interesting to know if young Mr Kennedy has a free hand with his team tactics.

    I’ve never seen it before.

One thing though. It requires a team of extreme physically fit players which I’m please to say the young ins are. They were so quick going forward too always having more than 1 option for a pass. The only criticism I have of them is that occasionally they did not pick the best pass and sometimes took the wrong option due to the higher risk of losing possession if they attempted the defender splitting pass. They will grow confidence in time that will allow them to trust their judgment rather than take the safer option.

I’d happily see a number of these Bhoys given the occassional chance in games we are comfortable in.

McGeoch won’t be kept out the first team long and I reckon Tony Watts could also take the step up.

I’d rather they made these poor decisions now than be met with howls of derision when they break into the first team.

You’re right, experience and confidence should address the poor choice factor.

Ki taken to hospital in Korea for brain scan after being struck by mystery illness

Celtic midfielder Ki Sung Yeung has been stricken with a mystery illness – and is awaiting the outcome of brain scans aimed at finding out what has made him sick and dizzy for days.

The Hoops star reported for international duty with South Korea despite having missed Celtic’s last two games through illness.

On arriving in Seoul, however, his conditioned had worsened to such a degree that he headed straight for the hospital.

Illness: South Korean ace Ki (right) has missed Celtic’s last two games

Ki told reporters in his homeland that he travelled thinking he would feel better in a day or two, but said: ‘I was then feeling really sick and dizzy, so I had to get attention. Hopefully I’ll know more by tomorrow.’

Several sources in Korea reported that, in addition to having blood taken to test for a stomach infection, Ki also underwent a brain scan as a precaution.

A representative of the player said: ‘We can’t say what kind of tests he’s had, just that he couldn’t stop vomiting and was feeling dizzy. We’ll have some results by tomorrow.’

South Korea are due to play the United Arab Emirates in a World Cup qualifier in the Gulf on Friday but it is uncertain if Ki will be fit enough to travel with the squad.

Celtic will be looking for the South Korean FA to act on the cautious side with their player, whose loss for any length of time would be another hammer blow to a squad already decimated by injury.

The 22-year-old has become an integral part of Neil Lennon’s midfield and has attracted Premiership attention with his displays.

Meanwhile, Scotland full-back Phil Bardsley last night backed Bolo Zenden to inspire a Celtic revival if Lennon snaps him up after a trial period at Lennoxtown.

Bardsley spent two seasons alongside Zenden at Sunderland and is puzzled why another English Premiership side hasn’t signed the 35-year-old Dutchman following his departure from Wearside in the summer.

Lennon took a chance on a veteran last season when he handed Freddie Ljungberg a six-month deal, only for the former Arsenal icon to disappear from the first-team picture.

Bardsley insisted, however, that Zenden would have a hugely positive impact both on the field and in the dressing room to help Celtic cut the 12-point deficit at the top of the SPL.

‘He’s still a great player and we were disappointed not to keep him at Sunderland,’ said Bardsley, part of the Scotland squad that flew out to Cyprus yesterday.

‘If he goes to Celtic, he’ll be a great success. I’m surprised he hasn’t got himself a Premiership club because, even though he’s 35, he’s still very fit and looks after himself. He’s a great fella as well.

‘He’s obviously left his options open and I know he went back to Holland to spend more time with his family. But he’ll have kept himself in good shape because he’s such a good pro.

‘Believe me, he’s always hungry to play. He comes with experience and would help the younger players.’

Too long a story for tonight, but what a night to grab you by the fundamentals and shout at you ‘this is Celtic’. Not just the team who were great but the Green Brigade, the weans teams who wore not only the Celtic tracksuits but also the Celtic smiles. They stood in the jungle answering the Green brigade until some jobsworth….naw I’ll leave that and the other eejit who moved some young lads from the padded seats for the moment, but I have the pictures.

a lot of great players had low caps in Scotlands golden era from 60s to 90s. Continuity of selection in rigid formation wouldn’t let players in.

john greig got the shirt and held it as captain as it was seen as a single position then, same as mcleish and miller stopped hegarty getting a game, houghton played for Ireland cos we had McStay, Strachan, Souness , Wark, Bett

Jinky had Henderson to contest the place, McClair got a game ahead of the prolific McCoist.

I don’t subscribe to the anti Celtic thing with scotalnd as my biggest bug bears were McGarvey, Burns and Provan losing out in the early 80s when Celtic were the best attacking team in UK – who was manager, Big Jock.

too many good Scots players then.

Too many poor players now hence the ease of getting 5 caps.
