O’Riley and Atalanta’s ceiling

250

With four years left on Matt O’Riley’s contract, Celtic can afford to reject any offer which falls below their valuation.  Atalanta’s reported bid of around £14.5m was not expected to be accepted.  The Italian club know that Celtic can afford to wait until late in the window in the hope of attracting others to the table, before they need to seriously consider selling.  £14.5m was just an opener – we all know how the game works for players in demand.

Atalanta’s highest spend on a player is £25m (€29m).  That matches what Atletico Madrid were prepared to bid for Matt in January, which has established a value for the player.

There is every chance he will move this summer, but Celtic’s aspirations and Atalanta’s ceiling means he might not see a lot of Bergamo in the season ahead.  In the meantime, let’s hope we get to keep the player for another year at least.
