O’Riley and Atalanta’s ceiling

250

With four years left on Matt O’Riley’s contract, Celtic can afford to reject any offer which falls below their valuation.  Atalanta’s reported bid of around £14.5m was not expected to be accepted.  The Italian club know that Celtic can afford to wait until late in the window in the hope of attracting others to the table, before they need to seriously consider selling.  £14.5m was just an opener – we all know how the game works for players in demand.

Atalanta’s highest spend on a player is £25m (€29m).  That matches what Atletico Madrid were prepared to bid for Matt in January, which has established a value for the player.

There is every chance he will move this summer, but Celtic’s aspirations and Atalanta’s ceiling means he might not see a lot of Bergamo in the season ahead.  In the meantime, let’s hope we get to keep the player for another year at least.

  1. “BBC:

Premier League champions Man City lose 4-3 to Scottish champions Celtic in North Carolina, US.

Ortega, Grealish & Phillips start; Haaland named captain and scores”

Celtic were simply there to make up the numbers.

    Cheerio for now.

  2. Brendan after the game:

“Well I had a long meeting with Michael and Chris today, so we know the targets we want to bring in.

“There’s still a long way to go in the window. I think my concentration is that we know what we want to do, we know the priority positions that we want to improve.

“Whilst the club gets on with that, myself and the coaches are really focused on the improvement of this team.

“So at some point before the end of August, I would expect us to have the players we want in.

“I’ll make it clear to the Celtic supporters, we know we want to improve the squad and by the end of the window shuts, I expect us to be that.”

  3. Congratulations to Celtic on a great performance last night. Four excellent goals and fast, exciting football. Hopefully this is how we’ll approach games this season. Last season’s build up in games was often laboured and tedious. Brendan looks to be addressing that. Now let’s get in the players he needs so that we are ready for the Big Kick-Off next week.

  4. As others have mentioned WHAT a BRILLIANT Pass from Nicolas Kuhn played in front of Kyogo for Celtics third Goal.

Wee NICO played it with the OUTSIDE of his foot…..with great style and vision……PURE FITBA from Celtic.

    Magic.

    HH.

  5. Its easy to forget (is it?) how strongly we finished last season with the same group of players who will most likely start the season.

We look even sharper in preseason.

Brendan seems relaxed about the amount of time we have left to find the “the priority positions that we want to improve”

So winning team, playing well, plenty of time to bring in improvements in priority positions.

    Good times

Vinniethedog earlier re composition of the crowd last night – yip.

    Strange one.

Any visuals of Celtic fans were close ups but they were the louder by far throughout the game.

I wonder if the marketing towards Man City was deliberate.

Also (not kidding here) empty light blue seats matched City strips almost perfectly.

Would be interested in the attendance.

    50,500 capacity so perhaps 30,000?

Place looked a fair bit less than half full at kick off.

About 10 minutes into the game though a wide shot then showed the stand the camera was in and it looked almost full.

  7. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

As for the game – enjoyable jaunt but am personally not reading too much into it.

In relative terms our starting 11 much stronger than theirs.

(It evened up as the benches emptied)

    Fitness and sharpness the watchwords.

PS – good pitch last night.

  8. Some encouraging signs that Brendan and his staff are going to get the best out of our players from the start of the season something we were not doing for a spell late last year. All the more reason for the Board to give our Manager the support he both needs and wants to take the team forward in the season ahead.

  9. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Re Brendan’s comments ….

    “long meeting”

    Guy seems relaxed.

Maybe he knows more than we do (maybe not).

He knows more than I do

(probably about a lot of things)

    ta for that, quite interesting.

who knew that atlanta is such a hotbed for football.

i was a wee bit suprised with attendnaces at both our games, i really did think city would be a bigger draw to the casual fans.

lots of good stuff from us,

  12. Shocking treatment of Greg Taylor. His wage expectations will not be excessive. If we can buy a better LB,well,we have made plenty of attempts, all ending in failure,I won’t hold my breath. If he goes,we then need two.If we can’t find one after4 years, good luck finding two.Even finding one who is better, still a great back up.

    Baffling.
