Our duty to develop Holm

134

Odin Holm (21) was the player to miss out on the Champions League squad, announced yesterday.  Last season he came on in defeats at Feyenoord and Atletico Madrid.  A red card in Rotterdam, Celtic’s second of the night, is a symbol of the player’s first season in Scotland.

The last 12 months have largely been a write-off for Odin due to illness.  Despite missing out on Europe, he made brief substitute appearances in the first three league games of the season.

Even through his travails last season, we saw enough to know there is potential in Odin.  It is Celtic’s duty to develop that potential.  Once we are past the international breaks, the fixture schedule ahead is packed.  Playing in a supposedly weak league should provide ample opportunity to rest those playing in the Champions League while developing the likes of Odin.

My apologies, there is a fault with the advert generator today.  We’re on it.

  1. “Among the galaxy of talented goalkeepers whom Celtic have had, the late lamented John Thomson was the greatest. A Fifeshire friend recommended him to the club. We watched him play. We were impressed so much that we signed him when he was still in his teens. That was in 1926. Next year he became our regular goalkeeper, and was soon regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the country” .

  2. Some players will not the grade because they’re not good enough. That’s a failing of recruitment- not a failure to develop.

If Holm is a player – he’s got one of the best coaches in the business to work under. Any responsibility for failure to breakthrough will lie elsewhere.

  3. THE RAGS

Twente signed out-of-favour Celtic centre-half Gustaf Lagerbielke amid interest from Eredivisie rivals Heerenveen and Derby County – and, although there is no option or obligation-to-buy clause in the contract, technical director Arnold Bruggink thinks the 24-year-old Swede is more suited to Dutch football. (Voetbal International), external

Gustav Isaksen, who was linked with Celtic this summer, says it would have been “boring” had he left Lazio on loan after spending a year learning about the Serie A club following the 23-year-old Denmark winger’s move from Midtjylland. (Tvmidtvest via Football Scotland), external

Dundee manager Tony Docherty says Luke McCowan has the mentality to shine at Celtic and the 26-year-old will not just be going to fill a jersey after the Scottish midfielder’s summer switch from Dens Park. (Daily Record), external

Never seen it like that before.

  5. Odín looks like an enigma of a player to me. I remember a couple of crunching tackles early on, and the red card challenge in the CL was pretty nasty and aggressive, which made it seem to me he would gave the aggression needed but it seems to have disappeared and he looked timid and a bit lost ever since.

If all the positions on the pitch his probably needs more learning experience than any other, a role encompassing many different aspects of play. He looks like he’s still learning, and he needs yo do it fast, but he also needs a regular run of games if we’re to find out if he can make it

A smaller squad with more games makes it even more important that players like him get minutes, there aren’t many left like him in the squad.

And it’s also important we’re not concentrating on developing just one or two players. We need more coming through for the model to work.

  7. IF A PLAYER DOES NOT IMPROVE EVEN WHEN GIVEN A PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN HOW IS THAT A RECRUITMENT FAILURE ?

SURELY THE PLAYER THEMSELVES HAVE TO TAKE SOME RESPONSIBILBILITY ?

  8. Odin seems to have a lot about him but is at the stage where he needs to play regularly

If we weren’t needing “numbers” for the midfield a loan would have probably done him a lot of good

We had Matt O’Riley, we have Calmac and Reo probably Odin’s direct “competition” is Bernardo and Engel’s, the bar is high and only going to get higher

Holm is in a great place if he truly has the potential

  11. Personally not seen enough of Odin to make any qualitative judgement on the boy. It goes without saying that we have a duty to develop all players that we sign. Apparently we paid c£2.5m million and therefore he must have been highlly thought of in the first place.

There have been quite a few youngish recruits like Odin over the past 3/4 years who have come in and really not broken through – I hope he still has a chance, although I must say the signing of Luke McCowan suggests to me that perhaps his time at Celtic may be short.

  12. In fairness to all concerned Holm clearly had the potential and possibly still has.

Ajer came from a similar background and didn’t happen overnight. Plenty on here were lamenting his eventual departure when it happened.

In fairness to Brendan and to the player and to. The recruitment team I understand he had an illness which took a fair bit of time out of his peak fitness last season.

I also think Brendan’s coaching team were stretched early in the season before his assistant arrived.

I really do hope Holm can step up. We have taken a risk moving a proven iwata on if not.

  13. There used to be a view on here that the longer a player stayed away from the first team the better he became.

Doesn’t apply to Odin Holm of course, he has not played enough games to gain the affection of the supporters, and it did not apply to Charlie Musonda, another one of the famed project school who for most fans the few games he played was a few too many. Fact is though you do not improve as a player at any level without playing games. Liam Scales is a better player now than he was when he first arrived, thanks to a good loan spell at Aberdeen and a good run of games under Brendan. Lets see how he performs against England on Saturday, two of whose players Rice and Grealish were both eligble for the home team in Dublin. Holm has a good footballing background but Celtic have other good midfielders and have just signed Luke McCowan a far more experienced player. That said he does have something about him, and with a full season ahead should get more game time, injuries do happen, some key games need prioritised, he has just got to work hard and, without going over the top, take whatever chances he will get.

  14. Just seen a Simon Jordan/Souness exchange ………….

The Syrup …..”Jack Butland didn’t have many saves to make on Sunday”.

Jordan …..”No, he just picked the ball out the back of the net instead”.

  15. bournesouprecipe on

Not surprised Odin Holm isn’t included in the CL squad, the eight home based rule hasn’t helped his chances. He might get game time, as a sub in the SPL, Brendan Rodgers said he “wanted more” from Lawal and Holm after the early game of the season against Queens Park. Lawal is gone and Holm was pushed further out by the Luke McCowan signing, and Adam Montgomery being listed as a midfielder.

    Brendan knows best .

    Yes.

Particularly the bit about Odin not going over the top.

That was what put him on Brendan’s naughty step in the first place. :)

I think Brendan must see something in him, otherwise he would have gone the way of Lawwall.

Unless Lawwall got punted for interfering in the signing policy. Or should that be Lawwell?:)

  17. with Scales and Taylor actually really definately improved season on season, and a reduction in the amount of deadwood , surely holm is in the frame for the coveted postion of escaped goat in the squad

being so cash rich, and finding creative ways to remember our greats I would really like a memorial for the Prince of Goalkeepers. on the celtic way, facing east to fife.

Did Hatate pull out of the Japan squad?

I don’t see his name mentioned in the China game.

    ____

No. Didn’t make match day squad. Hopefully, he plays next match. I’d like to see the current Japan manager get punted and our boys, including Kyogo, get more game time.

He’s quick into a challenge which is what is needed in a press. Maybe Brendan will put him on the bench against Hearts and in the team against Falkirk (who are no mugs) in the League Cup. With Kelly gone he will get chances.
