Our game in jeopardy. There are no words

548

Footballers may be our champions, but you probably have little idea the trouble that goes into getting some mundane, but not contracted, tasks completed.  There are exceptions, but the industry has a hierarchical system where the powerful (players) make sure their powerless colleagues (anyone else employed by the club who is not the coach or CEO) know their place in the food chain.  Even within the players group, the hierarchy is alive and well.

I have seen this with my own eyes going back as far as Martin O’Neill’s team and it can be brutal.  “Welcome to the club, son, now you better start acting like Beyonce”, seems to be how it goes.  We treat them like pampered superstars and they behave accordingly.  They certainly don’t need to worry about the people who ultimately pay their wages, because their wages are guaranteed, often for years.

Today, I feel resentment towards players as a group, which I know is unfair.  All the minor infractions I have been aware of over the years were brought to the surface by one major infraction.  That’s judging a group by the actions of a few, and we have names for that kind of thinking.  Better to remember Callum McGregor and Scott Brown reaching out to the dying.  Some players ‘get it’ and I am grateful for that.

The game in Scotland and Celtic’s European campaign is in jeopardy because of the actions of one Celtic player.  There are no words.  He can take a taxi back to the airport in two weeks.  Some others could do with a dose of humility, and learn to behave less like divas and more like respectful adults.

  1. Long time lurker – CQN10 attendee – not a hun – I just wanted to say that we don’t know why a player, that many have matched with the brain power of Oliver Burke, regardless of footballing skills, did something that may cost me, personally, hours of pleasure.

It really doesn’t matter to me what justification he has. In these times where I am living alone, in a foreign country, where the return of Celtic means so much to me, he will not be forgiven.

I hope Celtic take the most severe sanctions possible against him, regardless of the cost to the PLC

  2. I said right at the start of the day that the club should sack the player.

    I still hold that view.

Neil Lennon said in the presser that he asked the players not to leave Glasgow.

That’s like me asking you not to drink the last tin of beer in the fridge. I can ask….

Neil also said that the player only admitted the offence after he was questioned

when the club had been informed.

He did not provide the information willingly.

He is guilty on 2 counts.

He commited an actual criminal offence. ( no 14 day quarantine )

He has damaged the reputation of his employer.

Although he might have a lot of money to throw about I would be reluctant to

defend him as, although the situation with Sunderland and Adam Johnson was slightly

different, I believe in the current climate they are fairly similar both clubs would believe that

their right to protect their respective reputations far outweighs the player right to a private

life which would be at the heart of any dismissal.

Glad I got that off my chest. ;)

  3. Alex Higgins lived every day like it was the last

Smoked every fag like it was his last

Complete flawed beyond control as a person

But the electricity he brought to a rather dull game played by straights was like a tsunami to the viewer in the late 1970s and 1980s.

He started with nothing from a council house and ended up with nothing in a council flat.[see Jocky Wilson]

He only had himself to blame of course but in-between he thrilled millions with his incredible play at the table.

Even by the incredibly high standards of today some of his shots and breaks look amazing.

Stephen Hendry [who Higgins did not like much] was allegedly disgusted by the lack of attendence at Alex Higgins funeral by many of his peers and other stars of the game.

Hendry and Jimmy White [of course his great friend and prodogy] were about the only two high profile names from the game.

I read a couple of Alex Higgins autobiography’s and was amazed at some of the stories.

The first person to be banned from every hotel in the UK!

His great friendship with fellow crazy drunk ‘Oliver Reed’….His relationship with Marian Faithfull [mick jaggers ex].

And of course his incredible battles with the snooker authorities who eventually got him banned and ruined his livelyhood.

This guy would put most so called bad boy rock stars and George Best to shame for bad boy status.

But I loved him as a kid and he was charming when I met him in 1989.

  4. Football players are disconnected from reality. It’s not an excuse but its a cultural reality in the profession. There is no logic in flying out to Spain on a Monday to fly back on a Tuesday. It makes no sense at any time never mind during a pandemic. Even if he didn’t realise Spain was on the quarantine list when he left, that would have been made clear when he returned. Maybe because they get tested regularly he thought it was ok. Or maybe he is just that daft and that disconnected from reality.

Whichever it is, he’s 100% done as a Celtic player. He has made Peter look bad and damaged our brand, Peter will not like that. Whilst it’s conceivable he could be sacked or mutually consented, I’m guessing Peter will have already spoken to his agent to get the ball rolling. Football clubs normally shield their players no matter what they’ve done. I have never seen a player annihilated in a statement like Boli was today.

What we need now is experienced heads, Lawwell, Lennon and Brown will lead the way in settling things down as we look set to lag double digit points behind in the League. The old mantra will come to the fore, one game at a time. We also need some positivity, a good signing would be a tonic this weekend. There is no need to panic, we’ve been here before. But we must get to work.

  5. “There is no need to panic, we’ve been here before. But we must get to work.”

    Have we?

Possible 8 points behind after 2 games.

Just remind me when that was.

Bolingoli is an idiot of a human being but what does it say about Lennon and Lawwell’s leadership when 2 players (Griffiths and said idiot) completely ignore our manager/club’s orders (during a feckin pandemic)

and cost the club so much?

    Beggars belief.

  6. I loved the Hurricane when he was playing but any reports I got about him from Belfast Boys that knew him was that he was a most unpleasant person, to be avoided at all costs.

There are plenty of Belfast Bhoys on here they may agree or they may indeed tell a different story but that was the story as told to me.

    “You are an idiot”

What does that say about your point or your powers of influence? Nothing – it’s non sequitur

You can as justly blame me for my response as you can blame NL for Boli’s actions

  8. CORKCELT on 11TH AUGUST 2020 11:05 PM

I can concur – I worked in Benidicts Hotel in Belfast when at Queens – he was a horrible sectarian, angry little man.

But for £5 and a quarter bottle of Southern Comfort and brown lemonade, you could play a frame with him, he had a 51 break off me, barely standing.

I’ve still never beat my own best of a break of 8 – but it was worth playing him

  9. It will be very hard to win the league this year.

I for one do not think the league will go the distance, I think we are heading into precarious times with this virus, as someone said earlier as soon as sneezing season starts there will be a clamour to call the league.

Before the season started we were saying that we had to keep our noses in front in case of another short season and 2 games in we have dropped 2 points with at least 2 games catch up, now the huns might drop something over the next 2 games but I very much doubt it.

It is what it is and we have to dig in.

    Here’s hoping

    D :)

  10. You can as justly blame me for my response as you can blame NL for Boli’s actions

You can as justly blame YOU for my response as you can blame NL for Boli’s actions

    Obviously – sorry

  11. DAVID66 on 11TH AUGUST 2020 11:12 PM

It will be very hard to win the league this year.

I for one do not think the league will go the distance

I agree that it probably won’t go the distance – but every year it is hard to win the league – and at this stage it is more about how optimistic you are as a person!!

    Personally – I’m idiotically optimistic

  12. Never knew the above about Higgins. Just always enjoyed his game and in turn Jimmy White.

    Heroes eh? Who’d have them?

Don’t you all be telling me next that Shane McGowan is a drunk.

  13. RODOW1

Excuse me. Did I make any comment on anything you said?

I see we’re back to keyboard insults. The bravest of the brave.

Who’s the idiot? I never commented on your views.

  14. AIPPLE on 11TH AUGUST 2020 11:23 PM

Don’t you all be telling me next that Shane McGowan is a drunk.

I realise that you are being facetious, but I used to drink in Shane McGowans local in Dublin, the Palace Bar off Westmorland Street, and when a tourist would ask to buy him a drink, he would order 2 double southern comforts and 40 JP blue – €40 a time!

  15. VALE BHOY on 11TH AUGUST 2020 11:25 PM

I apologise, I did not mean to say that your comment was idiotic, I was using my speech as a tool in my argument.

I did not mean to insult you.

  16. Aipple – The funniest conversation with a “celebrity” I had was with Gerry Conlan – at the Finsbury Feis

We got chatting and I asked him about “In The Name of The Father” – He got no money from it – but whay upset him most was the scene where DDL throws a blanket over a screw on fire – he said -“I wouldn’t have pissed on the C@*t”

  17. RODOW1

    No bother.

Bolingoli is lucky that he’s quarantining for 14 days.

If the Celtic supporters I bumped into tonight, while out dog walking, ever come across him I fear for his safety.

Best that his next jaunt shouldn’t be to Dumbarton.

  18. If, as reported by some that the club is to blame for not giving implicit instructions to players then why the secrecy from the ex-player?

Surely he would have went into training on Wednesday and said “guys I’ve had a mad 2 days in Spain!”

But it appears he said nothing, nada, zilch.

That tells me he knew what he did was wrong and tried to conceal his behaviour, until caught.

But go ahead and blame PL or NFL….

  19. last year Boloi boli signed for us, he admitted he had not talked with NL and NL said he had not seen him

Jk had scouted hi m and as PL boy the signing was approved and operation sell KT to improve balance sheet started

we now only have Taylor and he is a very good kilmarnock player at best

peter lawwel gambled in a row to ensure the 38.5m cash left at end of last season and the 25M KT money stays in balance sheet to ensure his pension bonus is paid

The events yesterday change all that

i have no worries about us winning he league due to the massive 50m plus cash we have in the bank

their are gaps in sqaud, close them now end of , or you walk lawwel

  20. i'vehadtochangemynamebacktojackiemac on

FFS, I’ve just dropped me Celtic glass, FFS. Smashed, wouldn’t mind but it only had water in it; wtf was I thinking?

  21. So we sack the player !

He gets a move to whatever club wants him FREE at our expense.

We get no money for a £3m misfit signing.

We set a precedent which says any player who wants to leave simply breaks the rules and gets themselves a ticket out of SPHell. And a financial beneficial move to a new club. Maybe even to the club he visited last week.

Sometimes things are not as simple. Eg Eddie nips over to Spain and ends up with a budget deal to go play for Athletico or Seville or Wherever.

Sure it’s easy to say sack the guy. But thinking one or two steps ahead is not everyone’s strong suit when emotions are running this high.

  22. AOW

Agreed, as my sister would say, there are wee grannies that can’t even go to the library and he’s cutting about the continent. His fault and his alone.

No fault here on NFL or PL.

    RODOW1

    ‘Twas a fine moving flick.

“Did you foul the ball Gerry?”

  23. Maybe Boli is not so daft ! Maybe we treated the guy pretty badly and he feels little loyalty ?

  24. Snydeytim, I thought said that John Kennedy only put the cones out at training?

But now you have him as international scout who signs players without the managers approval.

That’s some jump my upside down friend. 😁

    Who knew…..
