Our game in jeopardy. There are no words

548

Footballers may be our champions, but you probably have little idea the trouble that goes into getting some mundane, but not contracted, tasks completed.  There are exceptions, but the industry has a hierarchical system where the powerful (players) make sure their powerless colleagues (anyone else employed by the club who is not the coach or CEO) know their place in the food chain.  Even within the players group, the hierarchy is alive and well.

I have seen this with my own eyes going back as far as Martin O’Neill’s team and it can be brutal.  “Welcome to the club, son, now you better start acting like Beyonce”, seems to be how it goes.  We treat them like pampered superstars and they behave accordingly.  They certainly don’t need to worry about the people who ultimately pay their wages, because their wages are guaranteed, often for years.

Today, I feel resentment towards players as a group, which I know is unfair.  All the minor infractions I have been aware of over the years were brought to the surface by one major infraction.  That’s judging a group by the actions of a few, and we have names for that kind of thinking.  Better to remember Callum McGregor and Scott Brown reaching out to the dying.  Some players ‘get it’ and I am grateful for that.

The game in Scotland and Celtic’s European campaign is in jeopardy because of the actions of one Celtic player.  There are no words.  He can take a taxi back to the airport in two weeks.  Some others could do with a dose of humility, and learn to behave less like divas and more like respectful adults.

  1. The league getting ‘called’ is certainly not a worry for the NOW.

Indeed I am pretty sure the lion share would have to be completed before any such event.

The big worry that should concern everyone is that the league is very very likely to be suspended.

To assume that there will be no more covid breaches would be fancyfull.

There are probable more stories getting primed in newspaper offices as we speak that genuine transfer news.

Under the incredible conditions we are now living life I fail to see how completing this season is even going to be a thing.

Just watched a sky news ‘undercover’ report from manchester where some rat-bag reporter [middle class woman] went round some ‘local’ type pubs with ‘ordinary type’ people …She had the full ‘roger cook’ undercover camera e.t.c….and was aparantly horrified that 9 out of the ten pubs did not ask her to sign in or out.

The one pub that did she said she had to leave for her own safety as it was just too crowded.

    The world has gone nuts.

Not a shred of evidence that social distancing measures have saved one life.

i woke this morning no less angry than I was when I went to bed last night.

At the risk of being overly dramatic, I think Celtic will need to forfeit European participation if they want the ten.

A trigger-happy Scottish Govt and an anti-Celtic footballing culture will see to it that the season is called at the earliest opportunity if Sevco are top of the league (would anyone be surprised if Sevco players deliberately and ostentatiously flout the rules to force the Scottish Govt to issue its ‘red card’?).

These cancelled games need to be played asap. The only way that can happen is if Celtic have no European fixtures.

  3. “Not a shred of evidence that social distancing measures have saved one life.”

Really? How is it being transmitted (as per Aberdeen recently?) What is the real story here and why is the Govt buying into its own economy bombing?

    Confused of Englandshire.

  4. I have tried to read back some of the pages on this thread but I have given up once I reached page 5.

I find reading some of the posts that are slagging the Scot Govt of their handling of Exam results etc, in order to deflect away from what Boli has done, and the serious consequences of HIS Actions and the damage it has done to Celtic, with possible further damage to Celtic and the Celtic support further down the line.

The Govt’s poor handling of Exam results is very serious obviously..BUT some should refrain from using that fiasco, in order to somehow justify and/or defend Boli actions….OR complain about wee Nicola etc putting the boot into Celtic FC. When the news broke about Bolis selfish actions, it was painfully obvious that the Media, Politicians, Pundits etc etc…would wallow in this news, and slag off Celtic FC as much as possible….what else did you expect ?

The Boli story broke out late on Monday night I believe and it was mentioned in some posts on here via the previous thread, in which I offered up my opinions on Boli etc early yesterday morning ( Tuesday morn).

I have grown sick and tired of reading/seeing some posters asking ” What if this had been Eddy etc etc” ?

As I posted early yesterday, I couldnt give a toss whether it was Eddy or Calmac etc or not..they should be shown the door…simples.

Fact …This wasnt Eddy or Calmac etc…it was a Celtic employee called “Boli”, so I do wish some posters would stop asking if Eddy or Calmac would get the same treatment as Boli…it is NOT relative !

Several years ago when the Huns had “Gazza”, and I would hear or read Hun fans defending HIS Conduct, simply because it was “Gazza” ?

This Hun Mob STILL give that Wife Beater a feckin Hero’s welcome anytime he is near Ipox…which should tell you more about them …than the Chump Gazza ?

Celtic FC MUST get rid of this Chump “Boli” asap…and I fear that HIS Selfish Actions MAY dent our quest for 10 in a row…only time will tell ?

If we dont win the League this season, it wouldnt surprise me to see the Hun fans renaming one of their Buses as ” Loyal Boli No.1″ ?

I sincerely hope that I am wrong, and that Boli’s selfish actions make sure that Celtic FC and the players are bigger, better and stronger than ever…and that HIS actions have made NL and the players even more determined…..again only time will tell ?

Lastly, I couldnt care less if Boli went to Spain for 4 days or 1 day…..what part of Celtic’s instructions…” DO NOT LEAVE GLASGOW”…did Boli FAIL to understand ?

    HH

The Govts poor handling of Exam results is a completely different/separate issue from “Boligate”.

Great post. I used to coach rugby and used the same George Graham drill. Any decent coach will read your post and nod in agreement or, as I did, shout in agreement. Ingraining mistakes through poor coaching is unforgivable, just one more iteration of the old maxim “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”.

    ———————————————————-

    Fieldofdrams,

Cheers for the endorsement from rugby.

Growing up I played Gaelic football and hurling at school level. When i moved to Scotland I played ‘soccer’ at works teams level and I played American Football at Scottish National Division.

    Gaelic Football Right Full Back

    Hurling Right Full Back

    Soccer Right Back

American F/ball Right Tackle, Right Guard Left Guard , and finally Left Tackle.

It will be no surprise to know that at ‘soccer’ we had no training , no coaching, no warm up ( other than Irn Bru and B&H)

At primary and secondary level I was coached, the teacher gave us basic responsibilities and a game plan.

However it was playing American Football where things went to a different level.

Pirated coaching videos from the NFL ( not Neil Lennon) for each position.

Basic drills that were repeated so that when it’s deep in the 4th qtr and your cold ,wet and exhausted you still turn the correct way, with your weight balanced correctly and you move to the correct position.

    Repetition , repetition, repetition.

I hate when I hear our players say that our managers make training fun.

It should not be fun, it should be effective.

Being effective means we don’t make the same mistakes continually.

If being effective means it has to be boring, so be it.

I could go on for hrs , but I’m typing using my phone…. which is not very effective : )

  9. Talk today that the SPFL will introduce points deductions for covid breaches.

I agree that if club’s are responsible for a breach then they should be docked points. I.e not testing players

However, I don’t like the idea of deducting points on the back of an individual acting like a clown against club instructions or knowledge.

Such a policy is anti-sporting if clubs are punished for individual player rule breaking.

  10. I would imagine that Neil Lennons aim was for Celtic to be at the TOP of the SPL from day one, just in case the season was called early again due to COVID etc ?

Due to our poor display at Killie AND the selfish actions of some Chump called “Boli” we are now faced with having no league games this week, while Sevco could gather 6 points in their next two games…which obviously mean that we are 8 points behind the Huns by the end of this week, albeit with Two games in hand.

This is NOT what any of us wanted for obvious reasons, and the thought of playing “Catch Up” to the Huns has me seriously concerned about our quest for 10 in a row.

IF the Huns do go 8 points clear of us by next week, I wonder if the Bookies would then install them as Favourites for the League ?

It certainly wouldnt surprise me…and the Bookies ( Sadly) do NOT get it wrong very often ?

“Boligate” may well have caused Celtic FC more damage in the longer term of this season ?

Again, I do hope that I am wrong ?

Celtic should have it in every players contract that if their conduct reduces the players value or hurts the clubs image etc. Then the club may be able to seek compensation.

The players are allowed to hold all the aces just now .

The reality is that they can down tools and force a move .

Reducing the selling clubs bargaining power.

The reality with Bolingoli is that all buying clubs will know we want rid of him.

Our position is exposed for all to see.

If have have the right to .

We should sue him for breach of contract and losses.

It would also set a precedent for future players and their agents.

If we don’t have such covenants in our current terms of employment ,then more the fool us.

As per Pauls recent article(paraphrasing), CL qualification would put us in a very strong financial position and probably catapult us higher than we’ve been for a long time in terms of financial position compared to other clubs in the top 5 leagues.

We need to give it and the league our best shot.

If we do that, and no more stupidity from individuals shooting ourselves in the foot, that is the best we can ask for at this stage.

“Secondly the black arts, just two of many examples…

… the Character assassination of Brendan Rodgers, throwing Leigh Griffths under a bus.

The club hushed up the issue of Brendan trying to get away to China. The person who told me about the row did not post it online at the time and neither did I. We both thought of Celtic’s interest first and did not wash this linen in public.

The first sign that the blogosphere was picking up on dispute was when Brendan started sending out dog whistles at his Press conferences, like “millions of wingers”. The we had OTT articles from a number of prominent bloggers all taking sides that confirmed their original bias. Although, Dermot tried to patch things up, he also knew Brendan was working his ticket and had lost trust with him. He still expected him to see out the season so the Leicester departure, even though we were compensated, was the end of a period of betrayal and mistrust. Brendan did not go because Paul 67 wrote a few critical articles; he eft because he wanted to and because he could.

Leigh was thrown under no bus either; he was surrounded and protected by the club but his reform has been gey slow. Leigh has been playing tig with the buses and it is his responsibility for the outcome. Lenny disciplined Leigh because of a faiure to heed friendly warnings. Everyone has a last straw.

Then the way they deal with other Clubs and players… recent examples – Lustig, Hayes, Simunovic getting usthered out the back door with a bad taste in their mouth.

Older players leave all the time at clubs all over the world. These types of departure are the norm and not the black arts. We got rid of all 3 at the right time, just as we did with Sutton and Hartson, two fantastic servants too. The mistake we made was with Paul Lambert- we pay senior players a lot. Let them do their retirement planning with their own money

How can this breed anything other than a bad reputation and corporate culture?

    BSR @ 7:51 PM

Prefer if you posted here, where the debate rages particularly on days like today.

At least we now have clarity, not cliches and sweeping statements for which you chastised another poster, but said regardless of context Rotten to the core? on a Celtic Blog about Celtic, its no wonder you to prefer, the wee black and white world at Sentinel Celts where nobody contradicts you very often, least not, until todays controversy.

Like a lot of returning Monikers all justifiably angered or frustrated and looking for ‘escape goats’, sadly, once again turning their guns inwards on their personal dislikes, you are angry at Boli Bolingoli but attack the PLC, in the same old way.

You dredge up Brendan Rodgers character assassination, and three ‘out of contract’ players that went well…….like out, of contract, and somebody threw Leigh Griffiths under a bus.

I thought Brendan Rodgers did a pretty good job of committing character suicide, the rest was done by the Celtic support, if you find a club where the fans dish out new contracts for their out of contract favourites, let me know where, and I’ll support them. Leigh Griffiths has been exceptionally well treated by Celtic, maybe they’re just fed up dragging him from out under a bus? Paul67 is onto Dave Cormack, I assume, for his null and void posturing, which is now all, so last season.

You’ve failed to convince me that there is any Jungle or even Northstand soul searching required for our club, which is run and officiated in a manner which continues to flourish despite many, many obstacles, least of all Celtic cynicism.

    I blame Bolingoney

    Hail Hail

Thanks for the replys, let me first say I understand the football world is a tough environment but most successful Clubs have sought and succeeded in bringing efficent, modern management techniques throughout their Clubs.

Celtic seem to be run like most of Scottish football in an archaic manner, coupled with the old school ruthless business approach and an autocratic boss then you have damaging and ineffective culture in my view.

At this point let me seperate the PLC, as you would expect with a DD company this is run robustly and effectively, the football club is a different ball game.

How many Clubs have moaned about their dealings with Celtic?

Would it really have been so difficult for the Club to make a decision about Lustig’s future before his last game and allow him to say goodbye to the fans, to leave as the legend he was. Letting him think we were going to extend his contract then pulling the plug left a sour taste and is typical of the way we do business.

Boli was down the pecking order and was deemed a mistake and rumour had it we were moving him on, how did he feel about that? If as Burnley78 suggests he felt pee’d off with the Club, maybe he couldn’t give a toss.

It is key when you have an important strategy to implement like the Covid procedures and protocols that you get buy in from each and every person, that it is fully understood and complied with, who at Celtic has the expertise to ensure that happens? I certainly wouldn’t be leaving that to a football coach.

As far as BR and Griff goes, well, we have done BR to death so suffice to say the Celtic support were never going to forgive him but the way Celtic used the MSM and bloggers to further blacken his reputation was malicious and unnecessary.

As far as Griff was concerned, the way he’s acted and the way he’s being treated is a concern…

Lenny at the end of May stated that Griff was in great shape mentally and physically. A week and a bit later the squad is back training, four weeks later and Griff is out of shape, how does that happen? Is Griff doing less at Lennoxtown that he was at home? Or did Lenny get it very wrong in May?

That though is less concerning than what the Club did next, they made a public statement about Griff, out of order in itself but also the way it was done, it wasn’t released as a press statement, it wasn’t on the Clubs official site, it was fed to one journalist as an exclusive. Alison McConnell put variants of this story into several publications, as follows…

    The National

Griffiths to be left behind as Celtic prepare for friendlies in France

    By Alison McConnell

    Then

    The Daily Record

Overweight Leigh Griffiths has been told he won’t be travelling with the Celtic squad to France on Monday

    Then The Herald

Griffiths to be left behind as Celtic prepare for friendlies in France

    By Alison McConnell

    Then the Glasgow Times

    LENNY FURY

Celtic star Griffiths axed from France pre-season trip over fitness levels after lockdown

    • Alison McConnell

So, as Celtic supporters were furious with the SMSM for attacking Griff “again”, it was actually Celtic that planted the story.

Two weeks later and miraculously Griff was in “great condition”, he came on against Hibs and looked great.

BSR, you called this good man-management, I call it stress testing… it’s not the way professional management would deal with things. Look at the results!!

IMO if you treat players like commodities, if you don’t get buy in, you get performances like Sunday’s and you get events like Bolingoli’s… Blameless… Not in my book.

In principle Corkcelt I agree with the first part of your post, life goes on. However, this would give Sevco a really good shot a CL qualification and money, while it will be the same for us we as a Club will have done it being a massive tax contributor and while paying all of our bills. None of our money is unaccounted for, none of which can be said about Rangers FC (RIP) and Frankenstein’s monster, Sevco. Cheating and criminality should NEVER pay especially in sport.

With all this useless coaching,I just wonder how we ever managed to win so many trophies, over the past 9 years. On that point, when Damien Duff left,he gave a glowing reference to John Kennedy, saying he was one of the best coaches he has worked with.Considering the stellar career Damian had,and the coaches he has worked with, during that career, quite a compliment. To think that the pre match warm up,reflects what actually goes on behind closed doors at Lennoxtown,is quite frankly,to me anyway, quite ludicrous.

I would imagine that Real Madrid,Spanish champions, have some of the finest coaches in the world.Attacking, and defensive.Did not stop Varane, probably,in the top 5 CHs in the world, make 2 horrendous howlers and get his team knocked out of the CL.Barcelonas defensive woes have been ongoing for a few seasons now,no matter how much they spend.Remember, the best CH in the world was coached for two years at Celtic Park.

    ________

It’s a fair point. I wouldn’t expect an arbitrary decision to be made now on the cups. I leave that to Neil Lennon on a game by game basis.

But, if we have to play somebody like Dumfermline or Ayr United or even a weaker SPFL team like St Mirren or Hamilton Accies I think you have to consider it.

The second 11 looked decent against a fairly strong Hibs side late in pre-season.

The second round in the League Cup will take place on the 28th of November. Last year it was on the 17th of August.

So it’s going to take place in a busy period for Celtic. Last year we labored to a victory over Dumfermline. The year before a rotated team beat Partick after a bit of a scare.

I’m fairly convinced we will rotate in the second round. The question will be, who do we play in the Quarter Final if we make it? That will be taking place on the 15th of December.

We could have the 19/20 Scottish Cup Final on the 20th. Do you roll the dice in the last 8 of the League Cup to protect the 11 who will start a final?

  21. Our chances of winning 4 domestic trophies and having a good European run must have been made harder by these postponements.

We may be forced into more rotation than we would like.

I’m torn on it. We lose 1-0 to a Partick with a weakened team and this place (and elsewhere) will fill up like a wake again. The Huns win it and then Stevie Gee has broken his duck etc etc, putting up with the pish for an eternity and giving them a massive psychological boost too.

I need to take issue with you on a couple of points.

First, the bloggers weren’t “used” by Celtic in any way, shape or form. We didn’t need steering to draw our conclusions about Brendan Rodgers. His own behaviour made it pretty clear what he was, and is. I have seen nothing since he left that makes me think he’s any different than the guy I said had shown an appalling selfishness in a lengthy piece on the day he walked out.

I started that piece with a story about the day I knew Rodgers wouldn’t be here for ten in a row. I was at a meeting at Celtic Park in relation to Res12, a meeting with Lawwell himself. It was the day after the Athens game at home, the night Chris McLaughlin was briefed by a “Celtic insider” who told him the club was furious with Rodgers for his dummy spitting press conference over signings.

I had written about McLaughlin’s claim the night before and got slated for it because I was “taking the word of the BBC”, but I knew that story was true.

On that morning I knew Lawwell was the one who had briefed McLaughlin because he sounded off about Rodgers that morning and ended his spiel with the words “Fans don’t know half of what goes on, and they wouldn’t want to.”

And I knew that these two men had clashed, and that their egos were such that there was no way back for the relationship. Lawwell’s fury wasn’t just about the night before, it was about Rodgers general behaviour behind the scenes. The very big hint that he gave out was that Rodgers was manufacturing an excuse to leave and making an issue out of things he never had before.

“What’s changed?” Lawwell asked me. “We’re doing things the same way as always, the same we we’ve done them since Brendan arrived, so what’s changed?”

I remember thinking nothing had and that that was the problem … but it didn’t make Lawwell less right. Rodgers was clearly trying to create a public controversy.

Everything he’s said and done since leaving Celtic Park, and of course the manner in which he left, confirmed my worst suspicions of that morning. Don’t think for a minute I wasn’t equally appalled by Lawwell, because I was and still am. Those two men had put themselves before the greater good of the club, that’s how I saw it then and now.

In the time after that day and up until the moment he left, I heard multiple stories from multiple sources first about the China move and then about how Leicester had spoken to him as far back as November the previous year. He knew he was going, he couldn’t wait to get out the door. Dembele, who I had slated when he left, turned out to be right on the money with his characterisation of the man.

As for Griffiths, I’ve written two articles now telling our own fans to stop spreading unsubstantiated rumours about that guy, and to no avail. If you think we threw him under the bus you’re dead wrong. I can tell you that far worse stories are out there about Griffiths, most of them lies, most of them nothing but malicious gossip, but those stories are the reason the club made a statement.

Better to combat this stuff with truth than let fiction run rampant on the forums and on social media, where it was and still is a major feature.

We spoke out because he had to. The stories were already circulating, and evolving and mutating as they did. There was little point in the club pretending everything was fine.

  27. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Morning all.

Feeling a bit better about the situ.

    Yesterday’s gone.

Chips have been eaten. Chip wrappers in the bin.

Some of the noise dissipated by facts.

    Two league games postponed.

    No points deducted.

    Schedule trickier.

    CL game going ahead.

Bolingoli is probably a bit of a tube.

Am sure there will be some new noise today ….

    Celtic are terrible (all MSM).

The “scorrish” govt will give the same priority to football this week as they did last week.

West Ham reject (personally, if I were a player I’d wear that as a badge of honour – dysfunctional club run by a pornographer)

    In love with Celtic again.

Shame we won’t see the Bhoys in action tonight but hey ho.

    Hail hail

  28. Champions League player registration regulations

    o 12 August 2020 (24.00CET) for all matches in the first qualifying round;

    o 20 August 2020 (24.00CET) for all matches in the second qualifying round;

    o 10 September 2020 (24.00CET) for all matches in the third qualifying round;

o 6 October 2020 (24.00CET) for all further matches from the first match in the group stage

    44.08

For the qualifying phase and the play-offs, a club may register a maximum of two new eligible players … Such registration must be completed by 24.00CET on the day before the relevant first-leg or single-leg match

So squad deadline for Reykjavik match is 11pm tonight with the usual “11pm night before” caveat.

Next round deadline is 11pm next Thursday again with “11pm night before” caveat.

  29. Chairbhoy

James Forreest has replied on the BR and Griff background stuff, so I’ll confine my comments to the accusations about ill treatment of long serving players, and the cries from other clubs re their dealings with Celtic

Firstly, I would always like to see our stalwarts getting a chance to say goodbye on the pitch. However, that failure does not constitute anything near a toxic culture and it is an accusation about Celtic that I have not heard even from our more dissatisfied players. There is always a dance to be had as an ageing pro nears the end of his final contract with us. They are aware of their declining powers but want to maximise their finacial returns; the club is aware of their declining powers and don’t want to be saddled with an expensive senior pro who contributes little to the team. So the player wants a 2 or 3 year extension and wages at the same or larger than they have been. The club wants to offer a 1 or 2 year contract and make it appearance related or reduced. Both are attempting to look after thier own interest. in the words of that over-rated gangster-porn movie -“It’s not personal- just business.” If the club let the player know he’s not getting a contract too soon, there is a down tools scenario as they protect their health in order to gain a contract elsewhere. In an ideal world, Lustig gets told before his final game, if the 3 points are not crucial, and he gets to have an emotional farewell. But the hard headed have to make the right decisions for the ever-lasting club, not it’s fleeting heroes. Lustig left at the right time for us- he had a poor final year and he did nothing at Genk after he’d left. Same with Hartson- who did nothing after leaving. Same with Sutty- though his situation was unfortunate as he could have contributed if he had wanted to stay. We gave Paul Lambert a long goodbye and got nothing from him but he got his caoching badges on us and went on to mouth O** F*** platitudes in the media.

As for other clubs complaints. If they’re selling players to us, their job is to use the Press to pressure the buying club, us, to pay them more. Anybody who gives house room and credence to the costermongering of Darragh McAnthony, Barry Fry or Rod Petrie is cannon fodder for QVC and Ideal Shopping. yet , we have a proportion of our own who shout “just pay the going rate”.

I give it as much credence as the praise given to PL by such as the Lyon Chairman for the Moussa deal. Would he really be praising him if he had been genuinely outsmarted or out-negotiated- I don’t think so. It’s all just window dressing and guesswork.

Bottom line- this toxic organisation has won 9 leagues in a row.

  30. Masterclass by Lenny. Put Boli on for 5 mins, photo gets leaked to the media, Boli gets hunted out the door and PL forced to splash the cash. Result.

  31. While I was in my local Pub yesterday a couple of barmaids told me that as from this Friday…Pubs are NOT allowed to play music from Juke Boxes, TV or Radio and that Fruit Machines are also on the banned list.

I dont play Fruit machines…but is there any truth about Juke Boxes etc ?

  32. PÓGMATHONYAHUN AKA LAIRD OF THE SMILES on 12TH AUGUST 2020 10:52 AM

    Big Jimmy,

    Thanks for that.

Don’t let that toad Bolingoli spoil your day just enjoy the drink. I still believe that this episode will galvanise the Club and we will end up being the better for it.

    ……….

    Cheers POG…

Hopefully you are right and The Hoops will be stronger and better. Maybe the Club should consider a “Seize Mentality” until we cross the line for 10 ?

Good luck to your Bhoy once again.

    HH

  33. With regards to fixture congestion for the rest of the season, I definitely think that it should only be fringe players played in League cup, as we can’t afford to risk first team .

This 2 day break that players were given.

I really don’t get this. I mean were they going to do on days off. They can’t go anywhere,( Bolingoli excepted) so surely they would have been better in working on tactics.
