Our game in jeopardy. There are no words

548

Footballers may be our champions, but you probably have little idea the trouble that goes into getting some mundane, but not contracted, tasks completed.  There are exceptions, but the industry has a hierarchical system where the powerful (players) make sure their powerless colleagues (anyone else employed by the club who is not the coach or CEO) know their place in the food chain.  Even within the players group, the hierarchy is alive and well.

I have seen this with my own eyes going back as far as Martin O’Neill’s team and it can be brutal.  “Welcome to the club, son, now you better start acting like Beyonce”, seems to be how it goes.  We treat them like pampered superstars and they behave accordingly.  They certainly don’t need to worry about the people who ultimately pay their wages, because their wages are guaranteed, often for years.

Today, I feel resentment towards players as a group, which I know is unfair.  All the minor infractions I have been aware of over the years were brought to the surface by one major infraction.  That’s judging a group by the actions of a few, and we have names for that kind of thinking.  Better to remember Callum McGregor and Scott Brown reaching out to the dying.  Some players ‘get it’ and I am grateful for that.

The game in Scotland and Celtic’s European campaign is in jeopardy because of the actions of one Celtic player.  There are no words.  He can take a taxi back to the airport in two weeks.  Some others could do with a dose of humility, and learn to behave less like divas and more like respectful adults.

As Garcia Lorca explained – most of the guidelines set are ignored and don’t result in fines or prosecution. My own son has just returned from Spain after going with his Spanish girlfriend to visit her parents. They will isolate on return and, as he works from home, this will not inhibit him or harm anyone else.

Boli does not have that luxury- he was just using spoiled footballler/ Govt. spin doctor reasoning that the rules don’t apply.

    I can foresee further crackdowns.

  2. Neil said publicly that players were told not to leave the country as recently as the start of the week.

    He disobeyed that instruction.

    He’s toast.

  3. God only knows how the Scottish government, and its’ quango the SQA failed to appreciate, until today, that, as the result of Covid19, all school pupils and students have been disadvantaged, the disadvantaged moreso. John Swinney has belatedly realised this.

  4. ROLLING_STONE on 11TH AUGUST 2020 3:11 PM

“Disagree. Firstly, in regards to the Killie result, posters are entitled to comment on issues which have been around for a while now: Scott Brown and whether he merits selection; our tactics and formation- 2 up front reaped success last year, why revert to 1; and how thin our squad is- 1 striker and 1 winger on the bench from a possible 9. Two of our subs were full backs- Neil has even stated the squad is thin.”

People are entitled to talk about what they want. I’m just pointing out, that the need to draw massive conclusions from any single setback is tiresome.

Celtic have never and will never go through a league season winning every single game. There will be bumps along the road.

This team managed to drop only 10 points in 30 games. A remarkable level of consistency. They deserve some leeway over a solitary draw.

“Some posters are looking at history expecting it to win 10IAR for us. You need to go out and earn it, particularly this year with our nearest competitor stronger than before.”

Their strength remains to be seen. They defeated an Aberdeen side without their two main strikers for a solitary goal and then turned over St Mirren at home. I’m not suggesting they won’t be a challenge, but they also have to go out and earn it.

“Secondly, if you want to rely upon the ‘well run club’ mantra, than we should expect to see forward progress on and off the field, particularly in such an important season. That’s lacking.”

That’s debatable. Compared to last season we have lost a few squad players in Gordon, Jozo and Hayes. Elyounoussi has returned and Forster replaced with an international goalkeeper in a multimillion deal. As you will also be aware, the window is still open so there is definitely opportunity to augment the squad further.

“P.s. the hotel development is a squirrel. We are now looking to push ahead with the development (which has been sitting on the back.shelf for 3 years) during a pandemic? Just another excuse as to why the money is not being spent…its being held back for the hotel.”

That’s a serious allegation. It is indeed possible that it won’t go ahead if the pandemic’s cost to Celtic are excessive. We are in unpredictable times.

But it should be noted that the club are engaging with the planning authorty to resolve a planning condition handed down by the council in 2017.

As somebody who works on massive development projects it’s not unusual for projects to go on hold for a couple years while it is redesigned.

Celtic were also due to receive a planning decision for the Barrowfield development in April. That decision date was postponed. I’d expect Covid to delay all planning matters.

  5. Boli is finished at the Club, he will not be accepted back by the players or the fans.

I suspect Celtic are looking to see if they can recoup a million or two of their outlay

It’s either a 2 week wages fine that should be donated to a NHS linked Charity plus been told to find another Club or else he gets sacked..

Players have rights in disciplinary hearings so everything has to proceed very carefully.

If Celtic shout their mouth off too early it could come back to bite them in the ass.

The Boli situation will be resolved & the likelihood is there will be no further repercussions for Club apart from 2 postponed games that will further feck up an overcrowded calendar.

Celtic should get back to the key job of getting in players, we still need a left back, a centre half, a young Brooney & a Striker.

Forget about the Boli circus, concentrate on getting players in.

  6. CorkCelt,

Boli will be gone. We’re on a yellow card. We still have a loose cannon in Leigh Griffiths on the books. I wish we could move on but are we confident we won’t have more of the same?

  7. CELTIC MAC

    I have a daughter in 6th year.

Her pal got her results and they were 2D’s and basically 2 no returns.

She got an e-mail from school yesterday saying all her grades had been marked down by

2 grades. She can now expect 2B’s and 2 C’s

FFS imagine if she was struggling mentally and took her own life.

My lass has been speaking to her constantly to try to keep her going.

Someone’s head should roll for this.

Just because we live in a poor area, thats where they want to keep us.

  8. Good afternoon Celts, I’m reading the previous pages but was moved to post this on the sfa twitter page as der hun were having fun with all this shenanigans. I posted the following, which I think is a valid question.

“Any news of the first offence, the rangers v motherwell game which went ahead without test results. Perhaps this first offence should be dealt with more severely as the clubs (not the players), were the ones who completely disregarded the rules on players testing”.

  9. markiebhoy

If I followed John Swinney correctly, the Scottish government, using statute, will now restore all results based on school/teacher assessments. Good news for all school students in Scotland.

Hope that helps re-assure your daughter and friends.

I was wondering how this would have been spun and twisted into being Peter Lawwell’s fault

    Congratulations on your creativity”

My point was current, it was in reference to a leader Paul67 scribed a few days ago titled “Dave Cormack’s Empty Words”.

It was also pertaining to P67’s lead today concerning

    hierarchical behaviour and macho attitudes.

My point basically was that Dave Cormack had taken responsibility and shown humility in the face of Aberdeen’s Covid-19 breach.

I compared and contrasted the fact that Peter Lawwel hasn’t taken responsibility or shown any personal remorse.

I then went on to highlight an example of PL’s macho and hierarchical leadership.

In short the irony that is Big Pedro the “bull dog”!!

    My point was this…

…why would an organisation who had this culture at the top of organisation expect anything less through that organisation.

IMO it’s a toxic culture and before we throw stones at others, maybe we should look at our own glasshouse (c) TBB

You decided uninvited to join the discussion with cliches… fair dos… it’s the way of CQN but don’t accuse me of moaning, going over old ground or confusion when my points were all current and clearly made.

    _________

Neither I or Peter Lawwell have to answer for anything Paul67 has said about the Aberdeen Chairman.

My point, was that any attempts to pin the actions of Boli to Peter Lawwell are hollow and

opportunistic. The CEO or manager of Celtic cannot account for the actions of every employee at any given moment outside of the workplace.

I challenged your point of view and you have reverted to pinning Paul67’s words on me. You seem unable to defend that position without trying to point out some perceived hypocrisy.

  17. Oh dear the usual suspects are back on and as per its big gas meter that gets it, meanwhile dave cormack is a good guy.

FGS he’s the largest share holder up at the pen, Peter’s just an employee a well paid one at that and that might be the crux of the matter.

Envy is one of the 7 deadly sins and it seems to be quite obvious on here, anyone who cares about his heated driveways etc, especially those that live overseas and don’t contribute tae the club wants tae have a word with themselves, might as well as no one else seems to be listening.

Boli flew out 1 day and was back the next, no much time tae spend on the beach or party it up in a pub so why was he there.

Lenny mentioned he may have been talking tae another club and tat might be why we found out.

BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL at 3:44 pm intimated the same.

    If so then cheerio.

  18. These last few days have been a tough old ride. What we needed was for our hooped heroes to deliver some normality, some joy…some hope. Instead we got a below par performance and now this self inflicted sh*tshow!

Make no mistake about it, never in the history of the club have we had a bigger target on our backs. From here on in; both on and off the pitch, we need to be doing it better, cleaner and smarter than anyone else. From the board, to the management, to the squad, to us the fans…we must give the government, associations and press absolutely zero ammunition, you and I both know they will shoot on sight if we do.

When we next take to a domestic field we could conceivably be eleven (yes 11) points off the pace but that really doesn’t bother or worry me, on the field we can, and will win this league…off the field though we can absolutely lose it. In short let’s all take a breath, take our medicine and in doing so take a big step towards the ten.

  19. Tontine Tim

If he was away on transfer business, talks or a medical, would we have known about it?

  20. SQA shambles brought to us by the dynamic duo of Sturgeon and Swinney …

Like in a number of areas CoViD19 is shining a bright light into places where darkness is the norm — and how we don’t like what we see.

The whole exam pass numbers game is a charade from the off.

We are asked to compare Tuesday’s results with last year and see the full picture — well no, no, thrice no.

What version of the 2019 results are we looking at?

The 2019 results published on the first Tuesday in August — Version 1

Or the 2019 results after all the appeals had been awarded / adjudicated — Version 2

If it is Version 2 then we are not dealing with this apples for apples.

If it is version 1 then we need to know what changed due to the appeals process.

We need to know what happens with the Appeals process — school by school.

Who appeals / who gets upgraded / what changes does it deliver — school by school.

I fear we will never get it because it would show the upper middle class gaming the system to their own advantage — the education system stinks and the last thirteen years have demolished 250 years of hard won struggle.

    CHAIRBHOY on 11TH AUGUST 2020 12:29 PM

    Hi Paul67,

Tough day for Celtic and Scottish Football in general.

It’s interesting that your lead article should focus on hierarchy and attitude. It reads as it’s a given, it’s not, it is the way it is managed.

The most ridiculous spectacle I have seen in football in this regard was the egomanical argument between our Manager Brendan Rodgers and our CEO during the transfer window following our double treble.

We were flying high and the damage that was inflicted on our Club because our CEO wanted to be top dog was ridiculous.

So until we can rid ourselves of this culture at the top it’s going to continue, isn’t it?

As a Club we don’t treat players with respect, more like commodities, is it any wonder they respond as they do.

Of course no excuse for Bolingoli’s behaviour yet no mention of our manager or CEO or their culpability in this respect.

Considering you gave the Aberdeen Chairman pelters why are our guys are above reproach.

You accused Mr Cormack of empty words…

“Cormack welcomed the decision not to order Aberdeen into a forfeit but lamented how the club’s hard work in returning to the pitch had been thrown in chaos by the ill-fated night out.

He said: “Given the significant COVID-19 outbreak in Aberdeen, we fully understand why the Scottish Government has made this decision in the interests of public health.

“With the pressure over this season’s fixtures, and the fact that we caused this problem, we were fully prepared to play the game tomorrow. We are very grateful that the decision has been to postpone, rather than forfeit the game.

“I took the opportunity yesterday to apologise to both football and health authorities, and with our fellow Premiership clubs today.

“The clinical decision last night from the JRG that it was safe to play underlines the confidence the football authorities have in the robustness of our procedures and protocols.

“Regrettably, what has happened in the last few days has undermined all the hard work that has gone into keeping our players and staff safe. We are now dealing with this internally with the seriousness it deserves.

“In the meantime, I’d like to reassure the relevant bodies, our fans and everyone associated with the club that our already rigorous measures are being forensically scrutinised and that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that no-one is under any doubt about what must be adhered to.”

Maybe if Celtic and their players had taken more heed of the Aberdeen Chairman’s words we’d not be in this mess.

    Where is Peter Lawwel’s words?

Maybe that schadenfreude doesn’t taste so sweet today.

    Hail Hail
