Our great times and our fantasies

206

Telfer, McManus, O’Dea, Naylor. That’s the Celtic defence who took Milan to extra time without conceding a goal in regulation time in either leg in 2007.

We won a corner in the last minute of the 90 that night. After two intense games, we had earned the right to load their box and take our chance. That’s how close Gordon Strachan came to taking Celtic to the Champions League quarterfinals, at the expense of Milan, who won the tournament that year.

In 2012, Neil Lennon’s Celtic played perhaps the greatest con dude ever in 2012, losing only to an injury time goal in Barcelona and winning at Celtic Park.

In 2003 I remember World Soccer’s report on the Uefa Cup Final. Apparently the better team won as Celtic relied on being compact and robust to take the game to extra time.

These are some of our greatest times. They will never return until we drop our fantasies.

Thanks for the reply – that makes sense. Not good reading but makes sense.

Indeed we do agree – I should have added “only” or only in my post as it was tongue in cheek :)

    QB

  2. that night in vojvodina –

    —————————————————

There were injury doubts regarding Jimmy Johnstone but the wee man took his place on the Celtic right wing at kick off.

For 45 minutes Celtic were brilliant in defence as they soaked up massive periods of pressure from the big strong Slav side. The defence was so good that Simpson had barely a save to make all game and Vojvodina were reduced to shooting from distance.

Celtic were angry when the referee refused to stop the game to allow treatment for the injured Murdoch who was on the ground for some time.

After half time Celtic became more adventurous and Auld gave Lennox the chance to shoot only for Pantelic to make a fine save. Shortly after McNeill went on a run and shot just wide of the goal.

Vojvodina’s goal was a tragedy for the hard working Gemmell when he shanked a pass to Clark which allowed Stanic a chance to beat Simpson from close in – the one breakdown in an otherwise outstanding defensive night.

Celtic held out against further pressure with McNeill having a magnificent game in defence. Boskov was somewhat underwhelmed by his team’s performnance without admitting it upfront. A one goal advantage was all thery would take to Celtic Park and Celtic had the wherewithal to reverse that in the return leg.

  3. Seems to be a general consensus on here, which is always good.

I asked before the game – what does good look like against Dortmund? I suggested a 5, 6 or 7 goal pasting was not it.

    So, that’s my position.

Away games in Europe – don’t get humped.

3-1s or similar are probably acceptable, given our current standing.

Tales of exceptional results over the past 20 years, or anything from the 60s or 70s, shouldn’t be our yardstick.

I belive we simply got the team, formation and tactics dreadfully wrong, given the opposition.

There will be other games. I’d like to think we’ve learned a very powerful lesson in Germany.

  4. AN TEARMANN on 3RD OCTOBER 2024 2:00 PM

“C40me What does the above suggest about the aspirations of those who appointed Brendan Rogers?”

I wouldnt know who appointed him and what the process was, but my guess is that its pretty simple, he/they thought he was the best available for the whole job at the time.

Another guess is that part of the conversation included progress in Europe, he certainly talked about it after he rejoined in a way he hadn’t necessarily before.

  5. AN TEARMANN

I still think he was/is the best available football manager. I think he’s young enough and intelligent enough to change, but if we are to fulfil our potential in Europe and for him to create the legacy he’s after he has to start doing something different now.

  6. That means managing the football team, not involving himself in the business or the operations of the club

  7. Paul 67,

    Not Fantacy but factual.

Re Darwin ‘s post last article.

I think we can buck the trend . We can suceed in the top level competition of European football.

Despite playing in a ” lesser” domestic league there are pragmatic mitigations we can take. We can optimise our performance by the following:

Be a stronger and tougher team, both mentally and physically . ( Just look at the two teams lining up prior to Ko on Tuesday night. The Germans looked physically much stronger.)

Do not accept laboured movement, poor positioning, poor passing, missing chances, lazy marking and slow decision making even although they will probably not be punished in Scottish football.

It is far too easy to blame refereeing decisions for missed chances. We need to look at what we can do better.

I do not think we too far away, but we must optimise what we can do well. Again, we did not do that on Tuesday night with fault on many of the basics.

    HH. IBWT

  8. Choirboy

Your recollections of Milan are different to mine.

Like the refereeing impact also playing its part.

Of course we would have to ride our luck but at least we have ourselves a chance that night. As we did v Manchester Utd a couple of months earlier.

The current manager maybe won’t stoop to Lenny or Gordon’s levels. Of course

Folk on here will just have to suck that up and accept our European limit with him.

  9. Sparta at Stuttgart was a brutal watch. You wouldn’t catch our guys playing like Sparta though. Scraping all the way.

The gulf is as big between these two and us v Dortmund financially.

Sparta manager adapted and our manager prefers not to. Simples

  10. ONIL

This has zero to do with the board.

    Nor spending money on players.

Everything to do with playing in a pub team league

How can anyone prepare for the kind of game we have on Tuesday by playing the same style in warm ups v Falkirk and St Johnstone ?

  11. Our mindset domestically is first class.

Did we go to Germany with an underlying inferiority complex.??

    HH.

  12. I would seriously worry if we see Greg Taylor made the scapegoat for Tuesday night. No matter how bad you think he was, and none of the goals were as a direct result of his mistakes, Valle is not a better defender than him right now. He’s learning the position, he has made some very basic errors already, the 7th goal came partly from him giving the ball away.

Playing him against Atalanta would send out some very worrying signals to me.

  13. The same challenges face

    Zagreb

    Red Star

    Salzburg

    PSV

    Feyenoord

    Ajax

    Brugge

    Slovan

    Copenhagen

    Malmo

    Slavia P

    Sparta P

    Olympiakos

Etc All big fish in their own wee non competitive ponds.

  14. If we get 7 points from last 6 games we will go through to next round

3 points at home to young boys virtually guaranteed (I know, I know)

If we qualify for next round Tuesday game will be forgotten about

Keep the eyes on the prize

  15. If you all wait long enough we might be lucky and get Steve Clark.

Great at parking the bus and hitting on the break …

Brendan will do for me .

As a team we don’t win enough 50/50s and we don’t have a deadball expert …..

If we’re allowed to play our brand of football it’s beautiful to watch a bit like dortmunds against us.

Pace , power , technical and lethal ……

I’m putting the performance down to nerves ….(to many of our players lacked touch or the ability to do an easy pass) .

Anyhoo,it’s done, gone, let’s concentrate on the RC game .

Will there be changes due to injuries , form or starts for the likes of Nawrocki , McGowan, Valle.

When will Sinisalo get a chance ???

    Beautiful day for Golf ⛳️

“I am assuming they would need to be as good as our opposition, so we are talking of about 50 million per player. In the SPFL ???”, Dortmund’s back four were only approx. £20M each I think. A few of their MFs and Forwards were 30M+ but their defence was cheap by comparison. Like you, I am not sure those players would come to the SPFL, usually as soon as we get players to anywhere near that level they are itching to move onto bigger challenges/more money.

*and that’s been our modus operandi since Brian Quinn and NOT Peter Lawwell TOLD MON, at the behest of DD, to prepare for life in the slow lane as allegedly our march to Seville almost put us in the grubber again.

  17. BOONDOCK SAINT on 3RD OCTOBER 2024 1:58 PM

I sense a wee dig at our manager. Just my opinion but I was hoping we would all stick together. Nothing can change that result now, but we do have time to prepare for the next one.

Celtic through and through, means players and manager.

    Sean

    —————

Spot-on BDS. Seems he is quite pleased with the result on Tuesday, as it paved the way for more digs at Brendan, who hadn’t been mentioned until after Tuesday’s defeat.

Strange doesn’t even begin to cover it. 😳🤷🏼‍♂️💩

  18. Dortmund forwards knew they had our defence beat for pace before the game started , our defence probably knew the same , our forwards knew they had to take every scrap that came our way.

The solution is to either drop the defence back 10 yards ( least expensive) tight 3 in the middle , drop both wingers back for a 5 and play a big bloke up front.

The other alternative of buying a faster back 4 will be ludicrously expensive. Having said that we do need an upgrade at both centre half positions. Unfortunately, big CCV misses as many Euro games as he makes ( happy to be corrected but it just feels like that ) , so for me we need some height and speed at the back asap , which means Jan window.

Our existing back 4 are more than capable but we do leave them horribly exposed against the really top teams … so given that Brendan’s going down the cavalry charge …. We need to plug the gaps at the back.

  19. Burnley 78,

Apart from Kasper i would not give any of pur team pass marks. Not a single player deserves to be the escape goat.

We did not do the basics correctly. Inexpliicablly we did not do well what we have been doing.

For many years on here i been advocating some sort of psychological assistance prior to European games.

  20. we’re pleased to give you advance notice that tickets for the William Hill Premiership match v Aberdeen (Saturday, October 19 | Kick-off 3pm) will go on general sale from 10am on Friday, October 4.

Show your support as the Bhoys return to league action and look to secure another crucial 3 points.

We look forward to welcoming you to Paradise once again on Saturday, October 19 (Kick-off 3pm).

  21. are aberdeen getting the new” rangers away allocation” circa 2,800 like falkirk did ?

that would be fair as they are taking over 4,000 travelling support in previous away games.

for sure the public sale of 3000 home tickets will sell out again.

while around 1,000 season card holding seat blockers wont turn up.

    predicted attendance 58.800

  22. If you truly respect the club then you wouldn’t send the team out to play the same way that saw us being “Rodgered” by the elite European clubs like you did 8 years ago and BR has learned nothing – zilch – nada – in 8 years as European laughing stocks [ Apart from when NL won his Europa League group – or was that because of Celtic only Covid? ] Paul 67 is correct, fantasy football is for the Playstation were £11 million projects don’t become invisible men like they do in real life.

The fact that the board saw fit to bring BR back to Celtic is an expression of their parochial outlook. The board gave BR a few bucks in the last transfer window which might be used to call BR bluff in the next window. The board know that BR will hoover up the trophies in the SPL one horse league and that will keep the pro Old Firm fans in their big fat assed plastic seats for the time being.

If I was BR I would be worried that the Huns stumble across a [ park the bus ] type of manager coz if they do then BR will look inept against them [ Like BR and AP used to look when Martindale and others parked the bus ] like BR looked last season when Hearts visited Parkhead and Naismith [ parked the bus ] won 0-2 and blew the title race wide open for at least a couple of weeks, and lucky manager BR was lucky again that big glaikit Phileepy the Hun manager handed the points back to us in their next game.

BR is too posh and snobby and filthy rich to get down and dirty and [ park the bus ] coz he seems like the kind of guy who has went through life and never had to fight his corner and it tells in the expression of the team who are an expression of the manager on the pitch, tough against the weak teams, and weak against the tough teams. What is Celtic about that.

  23. I’d love BR to come on CelticTV and explain what went wrong on Tuesday and what HE learned from the experience. At least we can then have some sort of basis as to whether we really can believe something will change going forward. I’m tired of reading the same old story after every pumping about what a learning session it was. Tuesdays set up and tactics were embarrassing.

  24. mncelt on 3rd October 2024 4:08 pm

The buck stops with tje manager Full stop.

However the application of the players must be questioned.

Our players performed the basics and more against St Johnstone.

They collectively failed to perform the basics on Tuesday

I fully expect them to perform the basics and more in Dingwall on Sunday.

Failing to perform the basics on Tuesday may not have averted a defeat, nevertheless it is a consistant worrying trend .

    HH.

  25. glendalystonsils on

It’s Brendan’s job to provide entertaining attacking football …. it’s in the Celtic DNA , and it’s what the fans want . But it’s also Brendan’s job to minimise the chances of a 5 or 6 goal hammering against those teams who we all know are capable of dishing it out if we get things wrong .

On Tuesday we walked blindly into a situation where we got it all wrong . Maybe I’m being naive, but Brendan will surely take all possible steps to avoid a repeat . Admittedly , history might suggest otherwise but I live in hope ..

  26. GREENPINATA on 3RD OCTOBER 2024 3:37 PM

    …..

Players make mistakes when playing against better players , it really is that simple.

    Hopethishelpscfc

  27. I don’t think that BR or the coaches would publicly admit what went wrong in Dortmund, hopefully privately within the team meetings all aspects of it should be examined, what supporters want to see is improvement when we play teams that are better than us, find a way that avoids being destroyed.

  28. I just had found the ability to watch the highlights back on Paramount+.

Their 6th was a peach of a goal. The 7th went through both of our CB’s legs and would have been blocked on another night.

On another night, maybe 4-1 but still a bad loss. We looked deeper in the second half, with a big, strong Idah up front. It must be our structure for Atalanta.

And…at this level…we need to teach our back five how to shout “blooter it” in Japanese – would have (maybe) avoided two goals on Tuesday.

  29. garygillespieshamstring on

I like Brendan Rodgers and I think he was the best appointment we could have made when Ange left.

Love the way we play from week to week, but I think the same method doesn’t work against top level teams and a more pragmatic approach to these games is needed. Still not convinced it would get us a result, although in the short term it might save us getting hammered like the other night.

I would hope that no matter people’s opinions about individual players, coaching staff or anyone else working for Celtic, no Celtic minded person would take any pleasure in the team taking a pasting because it would appear to vindicate their views.

I hope the Huns and diets get stuffed tonight.

    Don’t care about the coefficient.

  30. Just because Paul 67 dislikes our manager and is having a dig at at him ,doesn’t mean that the dig isn’t justified .

5 minutes into the match I was in a state of anxiety at how much room we were gifting Brandt.

It was obvious that we needed to change shape and suffocate the space he was being gifted .

    We did nothing .

The manager should have been all over that and made a structural change to our set up .

He was missing in action .

Negligent, and culpable for us getting ran ragged .

I doubt that he will change his tactics for Atalanta.

They are just as good as Dortmund .

They absolutely bossed the Leverkussen invincibles in last seasons Europa league final .

Realistic not fantasy football is what is required
