Telfer, McManus, O’Dea, Naylor. That’s the Celtic defence who took Milan to extra time without conceding a goal in regulation time in either leg in 2007.
We won a corner in the last minute of the 90 that night. After two intense games, we had earned the right to load their box and take our chance. That’s how close Gordon Strachan came to taking Celtic to the Champions League quarterfinals, at the expense of Milan, who won the tournament that year.
In 2012, Neil Lennon’s Celtic played perhaps the greatest con dude ever in 2012, losing only to an injury time goal in Barcelona and winning at Celtic Park.
In 2003 I remember World Soccer’s report on the Uefa Cup Final. Apparently the better team won as Celtic relied on being compact and robust to take the game to extra time.
These are some of our greatest times. They will never return until we drop our fantasies.

No matter what formation or tactics BR adopted, it doesn’t stop players failing to perforn basic football skills.
HH.
GGH and TT
I agree with both posts.
Some good, pragmatic posts these past few days.
Looking forward to looking forward to the Ross County game
Greenpinata –
I disagree somewhat. The players are told to go out and play a specific role, whether it be individually, or more often as a group. When they are told to press as a group, like we saw on Tuesday, when the opposition plays through it, we are left short of cover behind this group. No matter how good the players are, they can’t recover against a team as fast as Dortmund. I watched only the first 30 mins Tuesday and saw many times when we were left a man short at the back. This is coaching, not players individual abilities. Of course the players did not perform on the night, but this was a BR defeat and he needs to show us he can learn from it.
Celtic40Me,
Why don’t we just sack Brendan then,as obviously,he is not good enough. We could go on a Magical Mystery Tour trying out managers for years, well, obviously not the worlds,or Europes best,as they would not come, until we find the perfect one for us,HAS to be someone ,right. There are caves in the Atlas Mountains, nobody ever thought of looking there. As much chance.
I don’t think anyone is denying that Brendan got it wrong the other night, but I think some folks go overboard.
I am very proud of the way my team is playing right now. yes Tuesday was an aberration but it’s over with. We have an important game this weekend against Ross County. Whatever game we have next in the champion’s league can wait. One bad result and this place feels like we are in the middle of the transfer window again.
I can’t wait to watch the hoops again. Wee Greg will bounce back. Calmac will have us ready to play. Arne is good enough to play at that level, and one bad game doesn’t suggest otherwise.
Sean
i think its time the players (well its only really Kyogo that does it these days) should stop doing the ‘doo doo doo, doo doo’ after we get a win in the league against teams like St J and Ross County.
after the other night we should show a bit of humility when we win those games.
leave it for euro wins and cup finals, ohh and hun games because they dont deserve any humility.
Wouldn`t it be great if the Huns lost 8-1 tonight !! :-)))
PS I think they will lose but not 8-1 !
…..and it`s a Cheerio for now from me,
Cheerio.

The internet is full of supporters that know better than Brendan.
Amazing how many ,unfound managers, tacticians we have on this Blog. Some even willing to spendaround £100 million on a new back 4.Never said if they would keep CCV and AJ as back up.
Others want two class holding midfielder, the going rate,£ 50 million a pop.Again, where that leaves our present three,God only knows.Thats£200 million for starters, and four of our best players ditched.
To play in the SPFL !!!!!!!!!.
Deluded and nonsensical.Oh,and Brendan,not up to scratch.Find a better manager.Sheer fekin madness,but its a Blog,all opinions welcome.
My opinion is,we should have no hesitation in trying to sign the 21 year old Sparta CH in January. Before someone else does.CCV becoming a worry. The amount of CL games he has missed, not what we need.
Are there old pros on? or semi pro footballers –
I ‘m wondering about –
what if Atalanta and the Villa put 3, 4, 5 goals in against us (could well be more), what’s the feasibility of the players being able to switch it on against the smaller CL teams ; can you just wipe those hammerings from your mind? Would it not be better to park the bus, keep the score down and take some positives from parts of the game.
I genuinely thought there were footballing positives on Tuesday – DM, we could have scored more, Hatate in the second half but it gets drowned by the embarrassment and fear.
Dortmund Capacity: 81,000
Victoria Park, Dingwall: 6,541
Park the f bus ffs.
Jackie Mac
Boondock Saint, but I’m not sure he’d be too pleased at me labelling him an “old pro” . :)
Sorry Sean, former professional footballer is the term I should be using.
I was at Dortmund and Athletico and. PSG. Celtic got hammered and were easily beaten. In Scotland we can get away with lots. In Europe the players don’t believe in the tactics.
Brendan tactics are wrong and need to change but I suspect he won’t change and we. will get more heavy defeats
garygillespieshamstring 😁
We are in a league situation in Europe – let’s pause until things start to become clear on where we are going to finish. If we qualify for the play-offs this latest result will be forgotten. I think it was a freak result in many ways in Dortmund, everything going right for them and wrong for us, and yes we were in danger of shipping more goals,
Our domestic league is our ‘bread and butter’ -Brendan has come in and won the double from an indifferent beginning – strengthened the team and made a great start to this season. Surely we are not ‘calling for his head’ after two CL matches – one a resounding win, the other a resounding defeat.
When all is said and done we are in exactly the position that we expected to be after the first two ties with the Slovan result softening the blow goal difference wise.
It is a dagger to the heart to see Celtic losing so badly but there are so many clubs in the top leagues with the resources to outgun us and, on occasion, inflict a heavy defeat…………..just like we do to others in Scotland. Keep the faith HH
It’s like people have totally forgot watching Germany v Scotland…..parking the bus …demolished….Paul really doesn’t like Brendan .probably heard story’s about him ( and believed them !)
As for WGS playing in Europe…he sort of played the same at home and was brutal …I’m sure one year he was a pot 2 team on the back of MONs team.
If we attack Atalanta we will get hammered
If we sit back against Atalanta we will get Hammered….they are Europa winners …accept it
Garygillespieshamstrings
I have been called worse, and I do believe I had WORSE hamstrings than yer moniker:))))
That reminds me of my Irish friend when he was getting his citizenship interview over here.
The INS officer asked him if he had ever been arrested for a crime or prostitution and he said no, I do it for free:))))))
Sean
I am proud to be a pragmatist. I think back to when the draw was made and looked at the teams we could beat, the teams maybe get a draw and others we would lose. One of the latter was Dortmund. I expected us to lose , and we did. What hurt obviously was the scoreline. We are by no means out of it, lessons to be learned.
We are in the position I expected to be, optimistic.

It’s like people have totally forgot watching Germany v Scotland…..parking the bus
scotland parked it on an incline with the handbrake off.
we wont get hammered by 5,6,7, if we set up right, make teams work harder to get a breakthrough, then it can be the case that the home team stops chasing goals, and plays keep ball to be safe with their lead.
liverpool last night.
That penalty in the womens game is an absolute disgrace, no guess who got it for arm ball outside the box.
Dessybhoy,
Agree. Our women drive me nuts though. One incident sums it up.We put in a corner, all their team back, watching Caitlin, gets headed clear to centre circle. Our player turns and sends it back to the keeper. So many times they look to go back.
Forget the score,we have 3 points like a load of others.Everything to play for. This format is a vast improvement.
MELVIN UDALL @ 1:40 PM,
“I was also in the San Siro that night. Amazing occasion. Milan fans were top drawer also. Throwing us their scarves and wee Milan seat cushions after the game.
We were undone by a world class goal from a world class player in Kaka.
If we can win 7 points in our home games and possibly take one away point, we should qualify for the play off round.”
Yes, the Milan fans were blown away by Celtic support that night.
Kaka was a fantastic player…
Yes, the reality is we need seven points, we have more tough away games, yet that means we have winnable games at home.
The Dortmund game is an outlier for me, yet it might have come at the right time…
Atalanta away
RB Leipzig at home
Are games we are not expected to take points from but I’m sure we will be much more wary of the quality of these teams and the damage they can inflict, we can get use them for experience.
Brugge at home, Zagreb away and Young Boys at Celtic Park next year is where the points need to come from.
Hail Hail
Ladies equalise.
TURKEYBHOY on 3RD OCTOBER 2024 7:42 PM
Correct . Qualifying for the knockout stages would be the equivalent of finishing second in the old group format . and should be more achievablle theoretically .
“They will never return until we drop our fantasies”
Just to be clear – Paul hasn’t criticised Brendan Rodgers.
That said I wonder who “we” is.
The ladies are far tougher under Elena.
2-2 after being 2-0 down
Women fought back from 2.0 down to draw 2.2 well done Celtic.
Great comeback by the Ghirls,2-0 down,2-2.Face on the bitter Hun manager at the end Celtic manager on shaking hand with everyone, she standing there raging.
I’m actually all for a more pragmatic approach… but the evidence provided by this article to justify this is very weak.
Three incredibly competitive events in almost 10 years … the last more than 10 years ago.
Including that involving a Celtic team who were financially unsustainable (a theme Paul refers to from time to time)
Can’t believe Lyon are being cautious here, tentative, has no one told the Huns are shit?

“It’s like people have totally forgot watching Germany v Scotland…..parking the bus …demolished…”
………………….
The bus wasn’t parked vs Germany or Callum wouldn’t be trying to play the ahem Celtic Way on the edge of the box and giving cheap possession away.
Stevie Clarke stopped [ parking the bus ] when he became Scotland manager as there were too many non [ park the bus ] street wise players in his pool so SC ditched his [ park the bus ] identity and the results are similar to Celtic’s in Europe under BR.
Maybe if Timdom weren’t all University snowflakes from St Dimothy’s then [ parking the bus ] would be more appealing like it was when big Jolly Jack Charlton [ parked the bus ] and had the Worldwide Irish Diaspora dancing on the streets singing his name.
And then the all seated stadium scam arrived.
And with all seating came snobby football fans.
Huns trying to burn themselves to death.Setting off rockets during the game.Sally saying,” I am wondering were they are coming from”.Another big fine heading their way..Lyon 1 up.
Lyon now make a total arse of it,1-1.They get some fekin luck.
