Our major events venue, Adidas backfire, KR nerves

Despite their mid-season status, KR Reykjavik should offer little genuine challenge to Celtic’s squad of Champions League experienced professionals.  Still, the nerves tingle a little seeing a new management team lead the squad out of Glasgow Airport this morning.

Hopefully we have six qualifying games ahead.  Where we sit right now, chances of qualification are high, but far from assured.  There is a lot of work ahead.

It will be fantastic to see Martin O’Neill back at Celtic Park to lead Ireland against Scotland in the nations’ Euro 2016 qualifier.  Seeing the traditional away side of the stadium covered in green, while Scotland fans occupy the bulk of the stadium, will provide an interesting photo opportunity.  Apart from the ‘doe a dear’ lot, it’s likely to be a wall-to wall Celtic fan event.  Good to see Roy Keane back too.  In the away dug-out.

Hosting Scotland-England a few days later will cement the stadium’s position as a major event venue after a year of unique opportunities.

One of Adidas’ World Cup sponsor properties was to name and present Player and Goalkeeper of the Tournament.  What could go wrong?  Dragging the Adidas-sponsored and clearly embarrassed Lionel Messi up the stairs to receive his award looked contrived.  Despite reaching the final and, at last, building a World Cup goals tally worthy of comment (5 across 3 tournaments), Leo wasn’t even Argentina’s best player.

These awards are subjective, so there are no right or wrong decisions, but this one brought Adidas derision.

Delighted for Germany. The demographics are moving against European football but the continental game has never been as strong.

Many thanks to everyone who bid on the auction or bought a raffle ticket for the signed canvasses last week.  The raffle raised £604 and was won by CQN legend, Kolnbhoy.  Funds from both canvasses are going to Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookie Jar Foundation.

  1. One hears ’embarrassment’ mentioned a lot in here with respect to our last CL campaign but come on, look at the group we were in for goodness sake.

Maybe only Ajax come closest to us in monetary terms and we at least managed to beat them in one game.

How are we ever going to compete (consistently) with the likes of Barcelona and Milan?

Sadly, we will always be the plucky underdogs until something changes.

  2. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

In the hall of fame of the football game

there’s a name that stands alone

they’re a Glasgow team and they reign supreme

and they play at Celtic Park (apart from the next two home games)

    C E L T I C, see me, I see Celtic on the ball

  3. proudbhoy

    HT, thanks.

JJ, I got the young feller a ticket so looking for two billets on da bus.

Jude, I hope the lad does well. I’m not in Aberdeen tomorrow so wont be able to go to the tourney. Let me know if he’s playing anytime in Dundee or any of the Angus towns in his rise to stardom in the coming season. I’ll try to get along to see him play.

Taking the supporters bus and not the boogie bus to the game?

Planning a wee sesh wi yer lad before he goes to pastures new?

As an aside, all good wishes to Celtic’s friends, Cliftonville, tonight in their match against Debrecen.

Also, tomorrow Legia v St Patrick’s Athletic would be a good game for BBC Alba to broadcast to an interested audience.

  8. West End of East End on

I can’t see any slip ups tonight, I’m hoping to come away with the tie done and dusted…

Roddybhoy 12:19, while I’d hope for the games to go off without a hitch there’s just a little part of me that says let the huns make arses of both themselves and the SFA.

A long time back they were talking on hunmedia about trying to organise a display inside CP at the opening ceremony. That one bombed when they found out they had to pay for tickets.

    Dumb Dumb huns.

  10. Just back in from a family funeral, no need for prayers, mums side and not that way inclined :-)

Ruggyman, I seen you comment earlier on my apparent views on playing Kris Commons.

At no time have I said I would not play Kris, look at the team I put up 2 days ago, Kris was in it.

What I did say, I would not play Kris, Anthony and Derk in the same side for this tie, we need a more energetic approach, or workers in the team, we couldn’t carry those 3

Hope that clears that up :-)

    Glad were back tonight

    Hail Hail

BobM, not quite, I’ll still have to drive to and from Arbroath in the boogie bus. I’m not familiar with the murrayfield area and parking so the Acsc bus is maybe a good option.

Normal service will resume once the season kicks off at paradise.

I’ve got the label for my next bottling almost ready. Some minor teaks required by the graphic designer. I’ll email it to you and you can let me know what you think. Very difficult task for me trying to fit with the views and opinions of all the syndicate bassa’s who have no artistic talent whatsoever. So they all just get overridden by ra label meister:-)).

  12. Always liking checking thru the nags to find any Celtic connection names when the hoops play and there is one or two tonight at 21.10 Thirsk.

    GREEN ZONE 9/4

    IN FOCUS 15/8

Funnily enough i fancy SCOTS LAW 14/1 to follow them home!

    3-1 tonight for the bhoys.

    Jungle Jim

    Accordion Club Milan……?

Maybe they were out at the walk.

Those bands make me smile. Every time I see the fools, I imagine them playing banjos, their faces are not too different from the wee guy in the Deliverance movie either.

  14. ST is there anything about Celtic you like ? If so how about once in a while telling us about it , your views on PL and the board are well known on the blog and of course you are quite entitled them but do you not think it is time to move. Hail Hail Hebcelt
