Our redoubtable former manager

1226

No one on Celtic Quick News ever doubted Gordon Strachan, did they?

It’s been a long 8 years since that dark week but our former manager demonstrated enormous resilience to win three consecutive league titles and twice qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.  He is perfect for the Scotland role, although, to be frank, I didn’t think his squad had last night’s result in them.  Well done to all.

We have a special Father’s Day offer for the Willie Wallace book.  Order between now and Thursday morning and we’ll include a Father’s Day card, complete with your own message. See the big graphic to the right..

You can choose from two cards, see explanation and choices here, one with Tony Watt after scoring against some Spanish lot, the other with Billy McNeill receiving some trophy or other.

Click on the button below, enter the text you would like to appear in the middle of the card, and Tony will post your book off in time for Father’s Day.

  2. I think that when Neil and Bertie talk about WHEN “Rangers” come back to the SPL they are not expressing a fond wish/hope just stating an inevitable fact. In some guise, in some form, even if it’s the third or fourth generation of a dead club, a club of that name will be in the SPL.

Their fans and those who hold them to be so important to the fabric of Scottish society have not gone away and they never will.

How they get back, that is what requires monitoring!

I agree, it is a great way to absorb what he said, however, the only person who knows the sincerity, or the facetiousness, count is the man who spoke those words.

I don’t know which it was but I do have the video to hand if you’d like to watch it again.

He is entitled to his opinion and with a mountain of caveats I agree with most of what he said; nevertheless, whether he was sincere or not, that really isn’t the issue at all, the issue is… are we prepared to accept corrupt governance (very selective cheating) of our national game or not?

  5. I’m a little baffled as to why there is a debate over Balde or Russell. One is 6’4″ and a target man, the other 5’8″ and a player in Stokes mould

We will not be choosing between them . Russell may have been considered , but not for the role Balde has been chosen for

Imagine your best ever Celtic front two…

Larsson and McBride – van Hooijdonk and Sutton – Dalglish and McGrory, the permutations could burst your nut, but for me the partnership that would have caused the greatest alarm to all the other clubs and authorities would have been Fergus McCann and Paul McBride QC.

A lot of bad stuff was said about McCann and McBride QC, and I didn’t always agree with everything they said but one thing nobody could ever question was their sheer guts.

From the BBC 12 April 2011

Lawyer Paul McBride blasts SFA’s Rangers verdict

The lawyer who represented Neil Lennon says the Scottish Football Association is “dishonest” and “biased”.

Rangers assistant Ally McCoist won his appeal against a touchline suspension, while Madjid Bougherra and El-Hadji Diouf avoided bans for misconduct.

And Paul McBride QC, who represented the Celtic boss in front of the SFA, responded by describing it as “the laughing stock of world football”.

A spokesman for the SFA declined to comment in response.

Celtic manager Lennon will on Tuesday return to the dugout following a touchline suspension that followed his side’s stormy 1-0 victory over Rangers in the Scottish Cup on 2 March.

Lennon reacted angrily after an exchange of words with McCoist on the touchline at the conclusion of the game.

But the SFA’s disciplinary committee upheld Rangers’ appeal against his own automatic two-match suspension, saying McCoist had no case to answer.

“Anybody with the tiniest brain could only regard them as being biased and prejudiced”

    Paul McBride QC

Defender Bougherra was sent off during the match and also held the referee’s arm in an attempt to prevent him issuing red and yellow cards, while forward Diouf was shown a red card for dissent after the final whistle.

However, while both Rangers players have now been fined and severely censured for their behaviour, McBride believes the SFA has been too lenient on Celtic’s title rivals.

“The SFA are tonight officially the laughing stock of world football and they have been shown to be not merely dysfunctional and not merely dishonest but biased,” he told BBC Scotland.

“Because McCoist, who undoubtedly said something that provoked a reaction from Neil Lennon that caused a four-match ban for him, has received no punishment at all.

“We know that Bougherra, who man-handled the referee not once but twice, doesn’t get a ban.

“We know that El-Hadji Diouf who is involved in an alteraction in the tunnel with a Celtic physiotherapist refuses to leave the park and, given a red card and throws his top into the crowd against police advice isn’t given a ban either.

“What is any sensible person to think of that set of affairs?

“Frankly, anybody with the tiniest brain could only regard them as being biased and prejudiced.

“They are not rational, they are not fair and they are not consistent in the way they have approached the matter with Neil Lennon and Celtic in general.

“I find it interesting that, after all the fall-out from that game, I am the only one who has been banned”

    Neil Lennon Celtic manager

“And tonight I think people will be scratching their heads in amazement and disbelief at the way the SFA conduct their affairs and continue to conduct their affairs.”

Rangers have expressed themselves pleased with the decision about McCoist but were surprised that their players had been fined.

“Rangers have apparently said this is a victory for common sense,” added McBride.

“So, if a Celtic player tonight manhandles the referee, throws his top into the crowd, abuses other players, causes reaction among management and no action is taken, Rangers will presumably will tell us tomorrow that’s a victory for common sense.

“I don’t believe anybody thinks that to be correct.”

Celtic had successfully challenged SFA rules to reduce Lennon’s touchline ban, but McBride said that he and the club’s chief executive had hoped that the line had been drawn under their dispute with the governing body.

“We all hoped that,” added McBride. “Peter Lawwell declared last week there is no war against the SFA.

“There shouldn’t be. We all wanted to sit down together and get on and make things better and have a better dialogue and then we have ludicrous decisions like today that will only inflame the fury of many Celtic fans out there feel.”

Lennon distanced himself from the comments but said he would refuse to comment if asked if he agreed with them.

“I don’t think Paul was speaking on behalf of the club,” he said. “That was his opinion and I value his opinion obviously, but he is not speaking on behalf of myself or the club.

“I don’t want to make any more comment because I will end up in the stand or have a heavy fine.

“But if you think it is fair then a lot of people are burying their head in the sand on this one.

“I find it interesting that, after all the fall-out from that game, I am the only one who has been banned.”

Quick question if I may please: As we all know the league kicks off on weekend of Aug 3rd / Aug 4th. As ever for this Irish Bhoy, booking my flights well in advance is a priority so as to get them as cheap as possible. A mate of mine from Scotland is absolutely adamant that we’ll be playing on the Saturday (Aug 3rd) as we are champions. He rekcons the champions always play on the Saturday. I can book a same day return light Dublin to Prestwick and Edinburgh to Dublin later that evening on Aug 3rd with Ryanair now for about 65 Euro.

Does anyone / everyone believe we will definitely be playing our first league game on the Saturday, Aug 3rd as opposed to the Sunday?

  9. Celtic transfer target Amido Balde is travelling to Scotland on Monday for talks as a move to the SPL champions edges closer.

Balde will arrive in Glasgow with his agent and uncle Catio Balde as they hope to complete a move that would see the forward become Neil Lennon’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

    ===

My question is why? As far as i am aware his goal to game ratio is far from spectacular and those in the know claim he is far from the finished article. Don’t we have a tall striker already in Sami and It is not as if Balde offers something different in that he

has the physical presence of Chris Sutton or BBJ. If Hoops or Anto leave why not give Tony Watt a chance? However if the guy signs If hopefully our scouts will have unearthed another rough diamond.

I wonder if in any way the Machiavellianisms perpetrated by MediaHouse in any way encouraged the hate that was directed against Neil Lennon and others?

They were orchestrating a smear campaign against Celtic and its employees; in effect against us. Regards them, I wonder what other damning revelations will see the light of day only to be publicly ignored.

Shame on every single one of them and those who ignore it too. What they did, in my opinion, was criminal.

I don’t think Samaras is viewed as a striker these days, although that’s not to say Balde is the player we need, I know nothing about him.

I’ll be trusting the scouts on this one, but to be honest their record with front players isn’t that great.

Also the year before when the Huns won it, their first league game the following season was played on the Saturday against Hearts whilst we were at Easter Road on the Sunday. As I say, my mate is adamant it’ll be on the Saturday. I might take a chance on he Saturday now.

The adoption charity has been told by Scottish government it is going to loose its charitable status as it wants to refuse same sex couples adopting from St Margarets

  23. andycol is yet another Neil Lennon on

Hen1rik Leave sevco to their own devices. I want to know what they have done or what they intend doing about holding Ogilvie and Regan to account for the allegations contained in the recent Charlotte Fakeover emails regarding licensing Rangers to play in Europe in 2011. If these are true then Celtic and Kilmarnock were disadvantaged unfairly. It may be that the allegations are false but the questions should be put to the two most senior officials in Scottish football. The stench of corruption must be removed one way or another. These men have either been traduced or they should be removed

  24. andycol is yet another Neil Lennon on

Blantyre Tim. It is OSCR which is pursuing St Margarets not the Scottish government. The Scottish overnment issued the following statement after the OSCR ruled.

A Scottish government spokesman said: “The Scottish government is disappointed at this decision.

“We have worked with St Margaret’s to find a solution but the review process is a matter for OSCR to undertake independently. It is not for Scottish ministers to adjudicate on the law.

“There remain further appeals processes for St Margaret’s to pursue, should the society so choose.”

The spokesman said the government did not believe it was “in anyone’s interests to close an organisation which provides such a valuable service to vulnerable children”.

  25. Many discussions about THE CELTIC BOARD being quiet. Get your act together PL, Sevco are even beating us in the LEAK business.

In my heart I believe when the time is right (CF are proven to be genuine, not fakes) then we will get some statement. Listening to the phone calls its sounds like CG & Our Hero but can they be used for our argument?

Do not release anything to anyone (just like our signing policy) until we are ready to do so.

Let us internet bampots & MSM speculate but, until CELTIC are ready, keep quiet.

    I stand corrected. Thank you..
