Own the field, Celtic

357

Malmo manager Age Hareide’s press conference yesterday had a touch of the Kevin Keegan’s about it. As STV pointed out, Swedish journalists, writing for both Swedish and Scottish outlets, transcribed Malmo goalkeeper, Johan Wiland’s words, “They are pigs, all of them, that’s the way it is.”

Hareide didn’t like the coverage. I’m not surprised, he knows that it will be a significant motivator for Celtic, pinned to the proverbial dressing room wall, but his attempt to rebut reports as a failure in translation does not bear scrutiny. Not if it was Swedes who did the translating. Pigs are pigs.  Wiland gave Ronny Deila’s team talk.

While Ronny had an affirmative weekend, winning away at Tannadice, Hareide had to face up to his public defeated, increasingly unlikely to retain the league title. A run of three victories before visiting Celtic Park, has morphed into two consecutive defeats. A four point deficit became seven points, with nine games remaining. They are five points from a Europa League spot next season.  In short, Malmo are one bad result from the collapse of their season.

That’s not to say they are incapable of damaging Celtic, or Salzburg, we know that’s not the case, but there is an inherent fragility about them, which Celtic need to exploit.  They are a dangerous team who are punching above their weight, but there are no hidden reservoirs of strength.

This is what it’s all about Celtic.  This is the reason you’ve pulled your socks on each morning since your first joined a boys team.  The challenge is stiff but winnable, the prize, enormous.

Own the field.

Remember, there will be a collection of backpacks for Mary’s Meals on the Celtic Way ahead of the St Johnstone game on Saturday.  Bring anything you have along, it will be gratefully received and will be on the shoulders of a kid walking to school in Malawi, Kenya or Zambia in no time.  Thank you.

Tonight is all about getting the tactics right. We are the better team going by last Wednesday’s match so as long as we don’t do anything silly I think we will safely go through.

I used always be apprehensive before big games, especially against r@ng€rs (RIP) and European games. Now, I’m a lot calmer. I think about the games incessantly but I no longer worry that we might lose them. I’m not saying we will win tonight just a lot more confident under Ronny’s guidance.

We shall agree to differ Thom,no problem with that my friend.I find the crux of his argument, the existential effect on Celtic without outlining which rangers pre or post liquidation strange, but he will not be the first or last reporter to skim and conflate both histories.it is a good debate to have openly and one stifled in this country

    Hi mate,

Sorry just caught (not a fish pun) up. Unfortunately not done much with the blog over the past few weeks as I’ve been so busy. But when I move to a quieter life in Suffolk in a few weeks I’ll be back with a bang(er).

Hail hail. Enjoy the game tonight!

How often somebody gives the ball away is a good indicator of performance.

Obviously a creative player who has to take risks will give the ball away more than others. But to give the ball away and create nothing of note, suggests an ineffective game.

I’d love to be wrong, but we might be better off trying somebody else tonight.

  8. like everyone i am nervous about tonight

Stomach in knots and getting worse. Its the Glory or Despair scenario, nothing in between. Pub wins it over house. I’d play Mulgrew (for SA) for his height, delivery and defensive duties in front of back four, giving Brown more license to get forward. Griff and Forrest must be prepared to run at their defence all night if it takes that. KC on for the last 30, again if needed. Very difficult one to call, but I think we need two to go though.

  10. Till later all

hope I am on just after 10pm posting,

    GET IN THERE :)))

No matter what, I will be a Celtic supporter in the morning looking forward to the next game.

    However…

If Mikael Lustig has another injury-plagued season we could be struggling for the RB position.

Like the look of Saidy Janko, but I hope he stays fit.

I want Celtic to go through tonight but if they dont I will still be a Celtic supporter and I will look forward to the Europa league one thing that could see us through tonight is if Joe Hanson gets a chance at goal that he must stick it away he gets into some great positions but to often he misses the target. I am also surprised that young Fisher has gone out on loan I thought he would get some first team football for the hoops this season.H.H.

  17. Not many big clubs have four players for the right back position.

    Lustig, Ambrose ,Janko,and Fisher.

Looks like the youngster needs games, and was odd man out, not a surprising

    move.

  18. Malmo will come out with all guns blazing it should be a torrid 1st 20 minutes if they don’t score in that time the more nervous they will become We should try & spoil the game don’t give them a chance to pummel our goal in this crucial period. With them pushing forward we have to play wee James & Griff for the spaces they will leave at the back. Defence has to be rock solid & any breakaways we get have to be clinical. Whatever happens it’s going to be a long 90 minutes I feel

Good move for him rather than cooling’ his heels, the manager gets to see how he is in another premier league team.

Good luck Darnell I think yer a guid ‘un

    Thanks Geordie

  21. Not wishing to rain on anyone’s parade but Malmo are a different proposition at home, also they have 2 of their better players who were suspended for last week’s match, available.

We cannot just expect a rerun of last week’s game, tonight will pose different questions, this tie is on a knife edge our Bhoys need to be at their best, we need cool heads and to keep eleven players on field. We also need an even break from the Ref and as always a bit of luck.

I am hoping fervently that we go through but I honestly see progress or Europa as a fifty fifty bet.
