Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

  17. The EPL financial madness has had a knock on effect throughout Europe.

Spanish,French .Italian and German teams all have received huge transfer fees for players from EPL teams.

The SPL has not received much and as such the performances of Forster,Wanyama and Van Djirk have shown how undervalued our league is.

The rich are now seeing value in investing in other European leagues and even the English championship were a young untried full back is valued more than KT a proven player at European and international level.

The arrogant English say he is not proven at their level conveniently forgetting how he rendered Rashford so impotent that he was subbed so he could get to touch a football in the dugout.

We will command better fees for our players than other SPL teams but still below their true market value in due to being in a backward footballing environment.

If Scotland was to improve it’s international rating it could help but not with Strachan and his backwards championship leanings and negative system.

The blazers are the biggest problem but they won’t change as long as they keep sucking money out of the game.

I took a call there from my friend ; Myles who is boarding a flight from Dublin to Bilboa at the moment.

Myles is 84 and headed to do the Camino de Santiago on his own for a month. The plan is to walk 10 to 20k per day and book into hostels on his way.

He described it as a lifelong spiritual journey on the phone (I’d to show him how to do texts last week).
