Paddy the wizard, Paddy the athlete, he’s going all the way

547

We like Patrick Roberts; all of us do. He’s the kind of player who gets fans out of their seats, an entertaining throwback to a time when wing wizards were wanted by all. But Patrick is more than that.

I spent a bit of time with him last year at an Adidas ‘Backed by Messi’ event. He was very chilled for most of the day, before becoming sharply focussed, “I need to eat.” “I need to eat” was said several times. It had an urgency, the time for shooting the breeze was over, within minutes, a meal was needed to keep physiological objectives on plan.

Patrick wasn’t seeing many first team minutes at that time, but focus was complete. This is an athlete who plans to go all the way in the game.

He’s at Celtic because he wanted to be here. Manchester City were looking for an incredible figure for his transfer, well over double Celtic’s previous highest transfer fee, although perhaps not so incredible given the market in England. Without Patrick’s patience, City would have found a buyer, but Patrick knows where he and Celtic are going this season.

Great to have you back, Paddy.  You’re going to love playing centre half.  Ask big Nir, it’s an absolute blast!

    The hiatus was no accident.

    You’ve said as much yourself.

    =====

I think the phrase I used in reference to the budget decrease was unavoidable consequence.

You know, when your income decreases, its normal for the budget to reflect that, whether we like it or not (see above – unavoidable consequence).

Of course some of the hit may have come from some of our own fans who didnt buy ST’s on the back of the huns dying, but a hit is a hit and budget must reflect any drop in income.

The huns died partly because they couldn’t grasp this.

But its not akin to intentionally not qualifying for the CL, or for the purpose of keeping us close to the huns as possible as you’ve alluded to on previous occasions.

If that were the case we wouldnt have bothered qualifying last year or this year.

Surely one of the best test matches since cricket evolved, with 50 overs and T20. It’s like stepping back in time, final session and all 3 outcomes still possible.

    Magic.

    Hail Hail

  6. Johnny is a good player and he will be a good back up for Scotty. At the moment he is trying too hard to settle and show his worth, trouble is when you try too hard and snatch at a few shots you end playing the percentages incase you make a mistake. It’s a vicious circle, he could really do with a goal and a meaningful one at that.

  7. Sone Aluko, £7.5m, going from Fulham to Reading.

There is no point trying to rationalise transfer fees. Head-wrecker of a transfer when you try and plot how Celtic can compete with a neighbour like England.

  8. Bada – I’ll go win for windies – but it’s a fascinating watch – new ball could be telling

I have heard it all now buy a player for 1 million and within 10 weeks lets loan him out to Cardiff City What about giving the player a chance to settle in ? Johnny Hayes can do a job for us he gives a 100 % he has a good turn of speed and an eye for a goal it is a long season and he can play several positions. H.H.

No one has suggested that Celtic deliberately failed to qualify for the CL.

What has been suggested is that when the huns went bust Celtic deliberately cut budgets and ambitions.

My view is that the Club intentionally decided to tread water until The Old Firm income stream, which is a useful financial fallback in the event of early failure in Europe, was back in place.

And their failure to question the same club narrative is not unconnected.

  11. My home lap top remembers all my usernames & passwords.

Was off on a trip to West of Ireland for past 3 days, took a different tablet, couldn’t post on Facebook, Hotmail or CQN, crazy how these things become such a big part of your life, I also had a problem with my mobile, just got it sorted an hour or so ago, so after 3 days cut off from the modern world, I finally get my say on the Paddy Roberts transfer.

Paddy had a big Club V Country decision to make around time of Cup Final, he choose Celtic, he also had plenty of options this time around but again he choose Celtic.

That is enough to endear him to me for life.

I’m acutely conscious that a second loan term is fraught with danger, he was an outstanding success last season but that guarantees nothing for coming season.

However I’m backing Paddy all the way, delighted he is back & can’t wait to see him in action.

It is a bit of a tough one on Wee James but there are plenty of games to be played so hopefully both can be accommodated

Just a wee word to Bounesouprecipie, tried texting you to see if any news re Champions League tickets, but just in case I got the number wrong, if you are around I’d be relieved & delighted if you could tell me that the tickets are sorted..

  14. I thought Jonny Hayes showed on Saturday that he is beginning to feel more comfortable with the extra weight of the Celtic strip.

  15. Thanks Hot Smoked, Bourne & Eurochamps67 have been super, it’s just the pessimist in me, I can’t relax until I get the final thumbs up that the tickets are actually sorted.

  16. Yeah Hayes has been disappointing. I hope he turns it around, not showing much just now and keeps taking easy option. Its still early though.

Chuffed to have Paddy back. Hopefully he can rub off on Johnny.

    KLV

  17. Not doubting you for a second Joe, but there is a pile of click bait pish on there. i would wait for something a lot more concrete before getting bothered.

  18. Just googled about Jonny Hayes and this comes up?

    Who knows?…

    On the move again?

As such, TEAMtalk reports that Hayes is already facing an uncertain future in green and white. Cardiff City, who were disappointed to miss out on the winger this summer, have informed Celtic that they would be willing to take him on loan if he has no immediate future with the Glasgow giants.

And the report adds that Celtic are considering the offer. They signed Hayes as a replacement for Roberts, believing he would not be allowed to return to the club from City this summer.

However, Roberts’ sudden arrival renders Hayes somewhat obsolete. Therefore, after just eight goalless appearances in Celtic’s colours, the four-time Republic of Ireland international may be on his way out of the door already.

    Looks like a rumour..

Let’s see before we jump off the deep end..

It would be a first for Celtic Reckon to buy a player and loan him in the same window:))

  21. HITC click bait rumour mongers, I blocked them on Newsnow Celtic for that reason.

I wouldn’t believe them if they said we had signed Patrick Roberts on loan………….

  22. Hayes backheel to Leigh that set up a shot at goal and his header near the end showed to me that he can do a job.

He would find this job easier if supporters did what it says on the tin and showed him support.

I understand any doubters though as trusting a successful and history making manager with a track record of improving players should always take second place to a fan with opinions.
