Paradox for Celtic as Lazio and Rennes both sit third domestically

318

Lazio won their ninth successive Serie A game at the weekend, a club record.  Currently, the second longest winning streak in the league is two games.  They are third in the table, three points off top.  They have not dropped a point since before their first game against Celtic in October, and in that time they beat Juventus in the league and Supercoppa Italiana.

Apart from the two defeats to Celtic, the only other game they have failed to win in this sequence was the Europa dead rubber in Rennes.

Not that Rennes are a pushover.  They have not dropped a point in five Ligue 1 games since their loss at Celtic Park in November, a run that puts them in third place.  By contrast, Moussa Dembele’s Lyon, who are twelfth in Ligue 1, qualified for the Champions League knockout stage.

Were it not for one horrible performance we would be glowing at the halfway point of the season.  We won a remarkable Europa League group, picked up our customary League Cup and sailed through the league campaign until a December, when a few narrow wins were a portent to a painful defeat.  This does not make achieving the improvement that is required easier.  Paradoxically, revisions need to take place on the side that won their Europa group to ensure we improve in the SPFL.

  1. Lazio rested Immobile at Celtic Park. I guess that would set the tone for them. Don’t get me wrong they went for us in Rome. As for Rennes, i thought they were really poor and I know they had players missing in Glasgow as they were already eliminated.

We did fantastically well no question. My gut feeling is that had their been more riding on it the outcomes would have been different. But it’s pure speculation and we will never know.

David – I don’t think their hand needs to be forced. They have the resources, and they have the motivation to use them. But should they fail, there isn’t a desert island remote enough.

Singing about what we have won sits better with me than does what we hope to win.

An exception to that general philosophy was when we sang : The Huns are going Bust .

  4. Immobile came on as a sub midway through the 2and half at CP, and played the full match in Rome, scoring at the back post from a cross ball, iirc.

Its a bit of fun to think about, a lot of fun if it happens… which is probably why we’re singing about it :)

I was also thinking that the rumoured Adidas kit deal was made / will be made with the expectation it would used during the 10 in a row season

Never been a fan of the 10 in a row chant, but I blame the schools on that one.

That said some of the old cheers and chants need to be brought into the modern world

‘We might possibly win the Cup…” has a nice ring to it.

Totally agree. 100% correct. We are gonna hate looking at playbacks of games over the last four or five seasons, if we fail in our quest for the ten. It will be painful listening to the “Here we go…” chant if we don’t do it.

  10. If you take the exact same fixtures from last season (substituting Ross County for Dundee) the Huns are 18 points better off this season.

We are 10 points better off.

We have 8 more home games. They have 11.

In my opinion, this all means 4 points at least from the remaining two derbies.

I wonder if he could break up his journey to New York, spend a week in Glasgow (as a paid consultant) and get back inside Leigh’s head.

Worked last time. Turned Griffiths into a super fit 40 goals a season man.

PS – I’d be surprised if Celtic were surprised by Luca’s physical attributes.

Injury history, aerobic capacity, height to weight ratio, muscle bulk assessment and body fat measurement – should all be reviewed as part of a standard medical.

A gentle reminder to the players via the medium of song, many of whom not from our part of the world originally and not totally aware about its potential significance, may not be the worst thing!

Excellent piece – I agree with all you say.

We have to be realistic when assessing outcomes and what we must do to influence them.

Some on hear take issue with addressing the downsides, e.g. the commercial impact of losing the title this year, as well as the up.

This is a seminal moment for Celtic.

In other news, the average FTSE 100 CEO was paid £3.46m, so equivalent to Pedro’s earnings last year.

From what I can see, the smallest revenue posted by a FTSE 100 company (in 2018) was circa £260m. That’s two and a half times greater than our record turnover. Thereafter the revenue of FTSE 100 companies stretch into the billions.

How on earth did the remuneration committee at Celtic (which includes Bankier) conclude that we should be paying our CEO a wage (and bonus) equivalent to a FTSE 100 company? It’s scandalous.

It also might be the cause of the club’s inertia and apathy vis off-filed issues- why upset the apple cart when you are able to line your pockets with a wage completely disproportionate to your station?

However, as Mr Bankier said at the AGM, “he’s worth every penny…”. That was the end of the discussion on that.

Looking through old newspaper cuttings glued in my scrapbooks and other sources of ‘Celtic info’ big Tam’s debut came in a 5- 1 win over Aberdeen. The big man took over in goals, when Frank Haffey was injured in a Glasgow Cup 1st round meeting with Patrick Thistle in November of the same year.

Back in January 1975, Pilot had a number 1 with er ‘January’. By then of course we already had won 9 in a row, but it was Pilot’s earlier hit ‘Magic’, November 1974, which gave some wag the idea for the ‘in a row’ chant, So, we never sang it over the 9, which means the only time we did sing it was the season we failed to win the league, worse1974-75. Even worse we had to endure our rivals sing a bastardised (and I use that word advisedly Paul) version of what was in effect “our” song. There has been a whole lot worse since.

Unless and until we know the terms of Peter Lawwell’s contract, it might be prudent to ‘hang fire’ on judgement of his remuneration.

What we do know is that on his watch Celtic have become the most financially successful Scottish sporting entity in history.

Does he cover all the senior commercial positions within the club? Is he solely responsible for hands on generation of all income? It could be that to replace him would entail employing and financing a whole new department.

The real question must be – does Peter Lawwell represent value for money?

  22. Celtic will be without Ryan Christie for two games after the SFA handed the midfielder a two-match ban.

  23. So Christie to miss cup game against Thistle and league game against Kilmarnock.

If this has now happened (charged, tried and punished)?does that mean no other incidents from the game are being addressed? This was the only thing the Compliance Officer addressed?

  24. PETEC – if Morelos was going to be charged, would it not have happened already? Does the compliance officer not look at the match as a whole and say ok, X, Y and Z were missed by ref and need to be punished.

  25. Deniabhoy,

I don’t think everything has came out from another shame (huns at it) game .

Who knows though the SFA are blatant and nothing surprises me when it comes to them.
