Paradox for Celtic as Lazio and Rennes both sit third domestically

318

Lazio won their ninth successive Serie A game at the weekend, a club record.  Currently, the second longest winning streak in the league is two games.  They are third in the table, three points off top.  They have not dropped a point since before their first game against Celtic in October, and in that time they beat Juventus in the league and Supercoppa Italiana.

Apart from the two defeats to Celtic, the only other game they have failed to win in this sequence was the Europa dead rubber in Rennes.

Not that Rennes are a pushover.  They have not dropped a point in five Ligue 1 games since their loss at Celtic Park in November, a run that puts them in third place.  By contrast, Moussa Dembele’s Lyon, who are twelfth in Ligue 1, qualified for the Champions League knockout stage.

Were it not for one horrible performance we would be glowing at the halfway point of the season.  We won a remarkable Europa League group, picked up our customary League Cup and sailed through the league campaign until a December, when a few narrow wins were a portent to a painful defeat.  This does not make achieving the improvement that is required easier.  Paradoxically, revisions need to take place on the side that won their Europa group to ensure we improve in the SPFL.

Celtic seem to have adopted the mantra that we are dignified & professional, and conduct ourselves to a higher standard then the other lot.

May well be true Corkcelt.bit like that other mantra of financially well run club, which appears a bit shaky to an entity that did not exist 8 years ago.!!

    Celtic40me,

I just told you, ask the CFCB to investigate the SFAs licensing administration for 2010/11.

  3. Shameful decision by corrupt SFA.

Celtic board absolutely not at fault on this. However, they are absolutely responsible for any actions taken now.

As previously mentioned, we have seen our players assaulted with batteries, golf balls and careless aberdeen strikers. We maintained a dignified silence.

We simply must start to defend our players, our assets, our employees.

Was there a bail out in the MON era? I remember a share issue for the new training ground but not a share issue for a bail out.

Even if I accept Lawwell’s track record as being exemplary (which I don’t), it still does not justify the obscene salary. We ply out trade in Scottish football and are constantly reminded (by our CEO no less- see latest AGM) that we have to cut our cloth accordingly. Yet he is taking a wage which must make him one of the best paid CEOs in the game and, as pointed out, is completely disproportionate to the organisations’ revenue.

    Uncle Jimmy,

They are 100% responsible for the decision by allowing the trend to go unchallenged

  6. Does anyone think that if our club actually stood up against the sfa now and again that maybe just maybe it might have been a different outcome

  7. ” Naturally, we will be contacting the Scottish FA regarding our concerns. Scottish football deserves a disciplinary process which is fair, consistent and fit for purpose.”

ie The SFA process is not fair, not consistent and not fit for purpose. What else could The Board say?

Remenber, also. We are in Scotland where Celtic ARE treated differently.

The racial allegation is totally immaterial.

    Morelos made the gesture.

Morelos made the gesture BEFORE any abuse.

The accounts provide details of PL’s remuneration.

Our financial success has hardly been achieved based on incremental improvement, a defined strategy and the fulfilment of long term objectives. It was spawned out of the Ronny years when the club was listless, the team was playing in front of a half empty Celtic park and we were finishing bottom of a group containing Molde.

Like it or not, Brendan was a revelation. Few managers (particularly within our grasp) would be able to do what he did in terms of the life he injected into the club and the momentum he built towards 10IAR and regular European competition.

“The real question must be – does Peter Lawwell represent value for money?”. No. As pointed out FTSE 100 companies with far greater turnovers pay, on average, their CEO the same as we pay PL. I do not know how anyone can look at the figures and come to any other conclusion than we are vastly overpaying our CEO.

  10. Neil Lennon 4 game ban for the running about ibrox doing the Aeroplane.

Morelos throat slitting to Celtic fans and nothing.

If that doesn’t tell you the SFA are corrupt nothing will.

  11. Watching Arsenal Leeds game and the first thing that strikes me is the pace both teams are playing at. Can’t remember the last time I saw Celtic play with pace

  12. A problem Celtic have is that inasmuch as if you tell a lie often enough it becomes accepted as being true, so does the opposite become distorted ie If you tell the same truth often enough, it loses potency.

It’s immaterial, what matters is whether the SFA are strong enough (or willing) to withstand the PR offensive

Given that they have established doubt about the meaning of the gesture and introduced the extremely sensitive subject of racial abuse, at a time when associations are under pressure to be seen to be doing something to eradicate it from the game, I’d bet against it

  14. By that I mean, has he ever actually faced the press (with or without a translator)? Faced questions about his red cards and his disciplinary record? Tried to defend himself?

Seems he is cocooned way beyond the normal level.

  15. I hope Lenny has the boys watching this game. Might stop the laboured attempts to reach the opposition penalty box

Has anyone ever seen him when he is not COKED UP.

We were a financial basket case post Seville.

Hence ‘slow lane’ chat from departing MON and WGS having to ‘right size’ and yet deliver the success which MON did. He did unbelievably well winning ‘within means’ vs a cheating opposition. Arguably he did better than his predecessor.

The funding generated bolstered or net position and helped deliver Lennoxtown but any closer look at the numbers shows ‘their was no Seville money’ as Paul often said only a huge Seville ‘hole’ for a season we all enjoyed but ultimately saw us win nothing and our biggest rivals win their last ever ‘treble’.

By far the biggest crime our board made at this time was not vigorously pursuing leaving Scotland. Even doing this alongside the old Rangers (which was the only way) would have moved the dial. We didn’t as we had a new CEO with a different direction from the investors. Manage within our means yet still deliver a growth platform when transformational change opportunities arise. It seemed to have worked until last week.

This extract from RTE site backs up what Celtic40Me stated earlier although whether or not the SFA take any action is open to question

“The Scottish champions called for a meeting with the SFA a year ago after Morelos escaped retrospective action for several incidents during the corresponding fixture, including flicking his hand into Christie’s groin area.

Morelos could still be hit with retrospective action over the cut-throat gesture he made towards Celtic fans after he was sent off in the closing seconds of the game.

Christie’s offence fell under fast-track procedures but gestures fall outside of those time limitations.”

I agree that WGS did a fantastic job in turning us around while cost cutting

Paradoxically, our wage bill increased in his latter seasons (spending what he earned from CL) and the product declined. Sometimes a tight leash on a manager works wonders

  23. 31003

I agree it is fun as a neutral but imagine that Arsenal back 4 and central mid were Celtic and Leeds were Thistle. You’d put yer foot through the telly😎

  24. FAVOURITE UNCLE – would be interesting to know how often SPL teams/playerd are subject to doping tests. If he’s a regular user it would show up for sure. Doubt he’ll be the only one either.

Of more interest would be if they are tested for drugs such as HGH (Ronaldo-type physiques don’t tend to happen naturally), steroids and other performance-enhancing substances. Football seems to get a free pass on this yet it is rampant across the sporting world – cycling, swimming, track, rugby etc etc.

Too much football in money, no one can afford to take on the big hitters.
