Paradox for Celtic as Lazio and Rennes both sit third domestically

318

Lazio won their ninth successive Serie A game at the weekend, a club record.  Currently, the second longest winning streak in the league is two games.  They are third in the table, three points off top.  They have not dropped a point since before their first game against Celtic in October, and in that time they beat Juventus in the league and Supercoppa Italiana.

Apart from the two defeats to Celtic, the only other game they have failed to win in this sequence was the Europa dead rubber in Rennes.

Not that Rennes are a pushover.  They have not dropped a point in five Ligue 1 games since their loss at Celtic Park in November, a run that puts them in third place.  By contrast, Moussa Dembele’s Lyon, who are twelfth in Ligue 1, qualified for the Champions League knockout stage.

Were it not for one horrible performance we would be glowing at the halfway point of the season.  We won a remarkable Europa League group, picked up our customary League Cup and sailed through the league campaign until a December, when a few narrow wins were a portent to a painful defeat.  This does not make achieving the improvement that is required easier.  Paradoxically, revisions need to take place on the side that won their Europa group to ensure we improve in the SPFL.

  1. What’s a realistic fee for Cosgrove? Aberdeen will want from us whatever they think they could get from an English team. 8-10 million?

What does 8-10 million get you from Sweden, Poland, France, Germany . . . ?

PL prefers 20 year old projects that MAY become the next VVD, Dembele or Edouard. Buying in established players of quality who are close to their peak is not likely to happen.

Cosgrove would probably do ok for us but he is not likely to triple in value as he has limited growth potential.

    Cosgrove.

A purchase with one simple intention .

Win the ninth. Perhaps the tenth.

Got to agree – in fact Cosgrove & McKenna would make perfect sense shooting for 9iar/10iar.

OK they are not world-beaters, but we would know what we’re getting, SPFL-ready players in key positions.

We don’t need world-beaters, we need strength in the team to beat our one and only challenger, who, by the way, are no world-beaters either.

Money spent on Koussi, Shved, Bayo, Hendry – around £8m has been totally wasted – let’s not waste any more.

  4. Aberdeen have possibly taken on board the lessons of McKenna who’s value has certainly decreased since they knocked us back.

Cosgrove with players going to Pittodrie is certainly an option. A question worth asking.

  5. MACJAY – I don’t disagree but I think the chances of us paying Aberdeen the required fee to get him are slight.

Look at the haggling over McGinn, Turnball and Taylor for most recent evIdence of our approach to securing players from SPL. We play a game of brinkmanship every time. Sometimes it would be better just to get the deal done, get the player in and move forward rather than haggling over every penny.

    Cosgrove? Hmmm…

Setting aside his limitations as a players, why would we want to weaken Aberdeen at the very time when we need the rest of the pack to be stronger?

Rather than buy the key players from the likes of Aberdeen, Hibs, Motherwell etc, we should be looking to strengthen them. Give them Morgan, Shved, Kouassi and Okoflex on loan for the remainder of the season, and Hendry if he’s wanted. Heck, Sinclair if he’s got nothing better to do.

I was just going along with this suggestion.

Celtic just need to sign a bloody striker. Tyrese Campbell or Sporar sound good options.

Worst comes to worst just sign Sam Cosgrove.

    =============================================================

I felt we were bullied on the 29th.

We can`t be having that again.

Not just about the hun , though . We can`t ignore the others.

Cosgrove would be useful there too .

If Lennie and his team want him , then in this case , I agree .

Let`s just help to fund their new stand .

    Good point .

    OK.

    A two pronged attack.

Buy Cosgrove AND farm out some of our more inexperienced players to the teams you mentioned.

    DEAL ?

  10. BIG WAVY on 7TH JANUARY 2020 11:52 AM

    Cosgrove is rotten.

    A modern day Chris Killen.

    ___

There’s always a risk of that.

But it’s clear that Griffiths and Bayo cannot stay fit enough to properly back up Edouard. On top of that, Bayo is completely unproven and Leigh has looked off the pace.

We need somebody else. Sporar or Campbell sound like they fit the bill. But if that fails we need somebody.

The best of the rest isn’t always the worst option.
